Chapter 55

Stephanie swallowed her cake. Before she could respond, a sharp, mocking voice cut through the air. โ€œWell, well, look who it is. Thought youโ€™d be hiding under a rock after Mr. Ashford dumped you.โ€

Stephanie and Ella turned to see Lilian approaching, flanked by two unfamiliar girls. Ellaโ€™s face darkened. She knew Lilian had always been close to Olivia, and was also interested in Tyler. Since Oliviaโ€™s departure, Lilian had relentlessly targeted Stephanie, yet always failed.

โ€œHowโ€™d you even get in?โ€ Lilian sneered, approaching Stephanie. โ€œGot an invite?โ€

Ella pulled Stephanie behind her. โ€œSince when do you call the shots around here?โ€

Lilian laughed derisively. โ€œMaybe not, but I do know she wasnโ€™t invited.โ€ She wasn't wrong; Lilian had personally ensured Stephanie's exclusion from the meticulously curated guest list.

โ€œNo invite, huh? Just snuck in for free food?โ€ Lilian scoffed, her tone dripping with disdain. โ€œAnd what are you wearing? Did the engagement cancellation leave you so broke you canโ€™t even afford a dress?โ€

Nearby guests, mostly young elites, turned to watch, clearly amused. Ella clenched her fists, shooting a pointed glance at Lilianโ€™s aggressively tight dress, which seemed on the verge of a wardrobe malfunction.

โ€œWhat she wears is none of your business,โ€ Ella retorted. โ€œMaybe worry about your own outfit first.โ€

Lilianโ€™s smile froze. โ€œStay out of this, Ella. This is my house, my grandfatherโ€™s birthday. If you want to side with Stephanie, then you can leave too.โ€

Stephanie calmly set down her dessert plate and met Lilianโ€™s gaze. โ€œYou sure about that?โ€

Lilian scoffed. โ€œWhat, you threatening me now? Sorry, but the Hodge family doesnโ€™t invite people like you.โ€ She found Stephanie repulsive, knowing of Stephanie's role in Olivia's illness.

Stephanie smiled slowly. โ€œYouโ€™re right. I wasnโ€™t invited. But how did I get in?โ€

A murmur ran through the crowd. The Hodge familyโ€™s security was notoriously strict; no invite meant no entryโ€”unless one was exceptionally important. Everyone was curious.

Lilian smirked. โ€œElla probably snuck you in, huh? Either way, get out.โ€

A deep voice boomed, โ€œWhatโ€™s going on here?โ€

The crowd turned to see Tyler, Chris beside him. Their imposing presence commanded immediate attention.

Lilian immediately shifted her attention to Tyler. โ€œTyler, why is Stephanie here?โ€ Her animosity toward Stephanie was unconcealed.

Tyler turned to Stephanie, his expression darkening at her attire. Chris glanced at her, then away, his jaw tighteningโ€”still angered by their previous conflict at Cloudridge Valley.

โ€œHow did you get in? And why are you dressed like that?โ€ Tyler asked, stepping closer, lowering his voice.

Stephanie raised an eyebrow. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with what Iโ€™m wearing?โ€

Tyler exhaled sharply. โ€œYou tell me.โ€ Standing beside him, in that setting, Stephanie suddenly seemed the rebellious girl he thought she'd outgrown. Clearly, some habits died hard.
