Chapter 75

Stephanie shoved her belongings into her designer bag after ending her call with Setarian. Jennifer entered just as the leather grazed a sharp edge.

โ€œBoss, let me pack for you,โ€ Jennifer offered, rescuing the bag and meticulously arranging its contents. โ€œThis kind of bag is very delicate and expensive. It will be damaged if scratched.โ€

โ€œWhy are you being so careful?โ€ Stephanie asked.

โ€œThe material is very fragile,โ€ Jennifer explained. โ€œNext time, perhaps a canvas bag would be more practical? At least you wouldn't worry about rough handling.โ€ Stephanie showed little concern, but Jenniferโ€™s heart ached witnessing the mistreatment.

โ€œBuy me one then. Iโ€™ll pay you,โ€ Stephanie said, noting the bagโ€™s limited capacity.

Jennifer remained silent, clearly surprised by Stephanieโ€™s seriousness. โ€œBy the way,โ€ Jennifer continued, โ€œa Mrs. Hart is demanding to see you. She seemsโ€ฆ combative.โ€

Stephanieโ€™s brow furrowed. Mrs. Hartโ€ฆ Catlin? Here? Her face darkened. โ€œIs there only one exit?โ€

โ€œThe front and back doors are intervisible,โ€ Jennifer replied. The front door offered a clear view of the back; escaping through the back would be impossible with Catlin waiting at the front.

Stephanieโ€™s jaw clenched. โ€œLet her in,โ€ she said irritably.

Jennifer nodded. โ€œOkay.โ€

Alone, Stephanie steeled herself for the inevitable confrontation. Soon, Catlin arrived, her demeanor confirming Jenniferโ€™s assessment.

โ€œBoss,โ€ Jennifer murmured deferentially, dipping her head. Stephanie waved her dismissal. Jennifer nodded, exiting and closing the door behind her. Simultaneously, Catlin slammed her purse onto the desk, her posture aggressive.

โ€œHow did you land those deals? Stephanie, the Harts have status! Youโ€™d whore yourself to share them!โ€

Stephanieโ€™s face darkened. โ€œSlander me without proof? Who told you this?โ€

โ€œProof? A girl earning millions in a yearโ€”donโ€™t claim you charmed clients with sweet talk!โ€ Catlin retorted, her anger escalating.

Stephanieโ€™s eyes glinted. โ€œWho told you that?โ€ she demanded.

โ€œAnswer me!โ€ Catlin roared. Even without confirmation, Stephanie knew it was Olivia Hart, adept at manipulating with seemingly innocent words.

Facing Catlinโ€™s aggressive questioning, Stephanie countered, โ€œWhy should I explain? What are you to me?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m yourโ€”โ€ Catlin began.

โ€œMother?โ€ Stephanie interrupted. โ€œDid I ever call you that? After three months total with the Harts? Two months in the hospital. The remaining month, I saw their true intentions and withdrew. Yet they continue harassing me, masquerading as family to exert control.โ€ The question hung in the air, sharp and pointed.

โ€œBy what right do you interrogate me?โ€ Stephanie pressed.

โ€œEven if you donโ€™t acknowledge it, I am still your mother!โ€ Catlin shrieked.

Stephanie immediately called Ella.

Chapter 75

โ€œStefi?โ€

Glancing at Catlin, Stephanie said into the phone, โ€œHelp me post a statement immediately declaring I am not the Hart familyโ€™s daughter. The content should state the Hart family made a mistake. Iโ€™ll send you the relevant paternity test shortly; post it together.โ€

โ€œAre you crazy?!โ€ Catlin exclaimed, snatching the phone and hanging up.

โ€œCutting ties? Are you insane?!โ€ Catlin yelled hysterically.

Stephanie retrieved her phone. โ€œLogical, given your charade.โ€

โ€œYou ungrateful wretch!โ€ Catlin spat.

โ€œGrateful? For what?โ€ Stephanie laughed coldly. โ€œEven if I were grateful, it wouldnโ€™t be to you. Who do you think you are?โ€

Catlin stammered, speechless. Each word from Stephanie felt like a cutting blade. Catlin swayed, clutching her chest, her gaze venomous.

โ€œI nearly died giving birth to you! This is how you repay me?!โ€

โ€œGuilt-tripping? Really?โ€ Stephanie retorted. โ€œFirst threats, now guilt? When you dragged me back to the Harts, Olivia โ€˜repaidโ€™ that debtโ€”I was the one bleeding out in that car crash! Almost died!โ€ She recounted the near-fatal accident, the coma, and the extensive surgeries that saved her life. โ€œMy life was clawed back by surgeons. You spent a month postpartum? I endured two. Double the debt!โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t quantify this! I gave you lifeโ€”you canโ€™t erase that!โ€ Catlin insisted.

Stephanie shrugged. โ€œFine. Keep me. Can Olivia Hart sever ties with you?โ€

โ€œNever!โ€ Catlin roared, Oliviaโ€™s name igniting her fury. Catlin had vowed to Olivia years ago, when Stephanie was retrieved, that she would always be her daughter. โ€œThe car crash wasnโ€™t her fault. Stop vilifying her!โ€ Even now, Catlin defended Olivia unconditionally.

Stephanie was disheartened. โ€œRefuse to cut ties with either of us? How greedy. If you dare send that statement, I will refute it, claiming youโ€™re lying. To avoid embarrassment, youโ€™d better not.โ€

โ€œAt this point, you still want to threaten me?โ€ Stephanie asked, laughing incredulously. These people hadnโ€™t learned their lesson.

โ€œKeeping the daughter of the nanny who switched children is enough,โ€ she continued. โ€œYouโ€™re still threatening your long-lost biological daughter because of the nannyโ€™s daughter? Mrs. Hart, what is wrong with you?โ€ Stephanieโ€™s disbelief was evident. Anyone would resent the nanny, but the Harts' actions were beyond comprehension.
