Chapter 42

After hours of relentless questioning, Stephanie had revealed more than she intended. Completely drained, she struggled to remain upright before finally collapsing onto Sebastian’s lap, instantly falling asleep.

The harsh lighting made everything seem unreal, but Sebastian’s touch was gentle as he brushed a stray strand of hair from her face. He lifted her effortlessly, carrying her to the bedroom without a word.

Returning to the living room, he found Elliot waiting. Elliot surveyed the modest apartment and asked, “Bringing her back to Whispering Bay tonight?”

Long Harbor City was vast, its Shallow Bay Area boasting some of the city’s most expensive oceanfront properties. Whispering Bay, the most exclusive location, was secluded and tranquil. Years ago, wealthy families had fiercely competed for the land when it became available. Sebastian, however, had secured it after Stephanie casually mentioned her fondness for the place during a scenic tour. He had outbid the businessmen who planned to develop it into another luxury complex, designing it solely for her. He’d intended it as a coming-of-age gift, but Stephanie’s disappearance after the Giovanni incident had disrupted his plans.

Stepping onto the balcony, Sebastian lit a cigarette and inhaled deeply. He waved dismissively. “She needs rest tonight. Let her sleep here. Bring up my luggage.”

Elliot paused, his gaze lingering on the small space, realizing Sebastian planned to stay. “You’re staying here?” he asked, almost incredulously.

Sebastian gave him a cold look. “Is that a problem?”

Elliot quickly shook his head. “No, no problem. I’ll get it right away.” He mused silently, As long as it’s for Stephanie, Sebastian will endure anything!

Sebastian's willingness to settle for a tiny apartment, simply to avoid disturbing her, spoke volumes. After Elliot left to retrieve the luggage, Sebastian meticulously checked every corner of the apartment, ensuring no trace of another man. Two years of worry finally eased from his heart. He spotted a new pink bath towel—clearly for Stephanie—and smiled faintly.

Stephanie awoke to an urgent need to use the bathroom. She shuffled towards the door, but froze upon stepping from her room. Sebastian stood there, his waist wrapped in a pink bath towel. She blinked in surprise; for a moment, the scene seemed almost comical. Then, a loud, insistent doorbell rang, piercing the quiet.

Instinctively, Stephanie glanced at the door, then back at Sebastian. He frowned. “Someone’s looking for you at this hour?” The wall clock showed five in the morning—just before dawn. Outside, Chris was ringing the doorbell with relentless persistence.
