Chapter 79
“You’re right, we absolutely can’t let her associate with those shady companies,” Catlin said. Severing ties was one thing, but even if they did, it would still disgrace the Hart family. After all, she had been recognized by them for two years.
Catlin suppressed her anger and took Olivia’s hand. “Then you make sure to talk to Chris about it, okay?”
Olivia nodded. “Okay.”
“If possible, cut off all cooperation and shut down that studio,” Catlin said. She felt that as long as it existed, it would eventually cause trouble. Stephanie had dared to use its money and defy her. Who knew what else she might do?
Olivia, hearing this, felt a surge of satisfaction, but feigned concern. “But if we do that, she’ll probably make a scene, won’t she?”
“Let her! Hasn’t she made enough of a scene already?” Catlin replied irritably. She could only make a scene because of the studio. Without it, what leverage would she have? This solidified Catlin’s resolve to shut it down.
“Better than having her embarrass the entire Hart family later,” she added.
“You’re right,” Olivia agreed. “Then I’ll go talk to Chris.”
Seeing Olivia’s support, Catlin felt comforted. Recalling Stephanie’s phone call and her earlier “ashes” comment, Catlin patted Olivia’s hand sympathetically. “Sigh, having such an ungrateful daughter is exhausting. If only she were as obedient as you.” The disobedient one angered her; the obedient one broke her heart.
“I heard Chris is trying to buy land at Shallow Bay to get a place for you to recuperate. He’s been so good to you. But the Ashford family…” She trailed off, unable to mention them without feeling their ruthlessness. They had separated two lovers.
If Olivia had been with Chris, everything would have been fine. Now, despite the turmoil, their biological daughter hadn't even joined the Ashford family, and they wouldn't accept the adopted daughter either. All this was Stephanie’s fault. That useless girl. And now, the Ashford family was pressuring their company—also Stephanie’s doing.
“Mom, with my health like this, I’m already content that Chris is still taking care of me,” Olivia said softly.
“You’ve really suffered, my dear. If only we hadn’t gone to find Stephanie back then, the Ashford family wouldn’t have known you were adopted. You and Chris would’ve already been married.”
“Stop saying that. She is your biological daughter, and it was right for you to find her.”
Olivia’s words ached Catlin’s heart. Stephanie didn’t deserve it, but Olivia’s understanding was enough.
“You are such a good girl.” Catlin felt even more heartbroken for Olivia.
After chatting, Chris arrived with food suitable for Olivia. Catlin tactfully gave them space. She could no longer rely on Stephanie. Even if the Ashford family disliked Olivia, Catlin wasn't afraid; she had Chris. If they wanted to trouble the Hart family, they'd have to deal with him first. It was just Chris and Olivia now.
