Chapter 180: Pulling Hair
Roland was a man of strong principles. He’d known Alexander for a long time, and their relationship was exceptionally close. Alexander, however, had always been reserved and aloof, even as a child. His emotional responses were often delayed, leading Roland to constantly worry about others taking advantage of him. But Alexander was clever; no one could easily bully him. Roland's concern stemmed purely from protective instincts.
Their marriage, however, had drawn criticism. Many felt Alexander was being manipulated, especially after an incident at a recent gathering. Alexander was usually adept at handling relationships, rarely needing to apologize. His apology for Isabella’s mistake left a bitter taste in everyone's mouths.
At the time, speculation swirled about a reconciliation between Alexander and his ex-girlfriend, Eleanor, who had recently broken up with him. Some even welcomed Alexander’s ex-classmate, Hannah, stepping in. While they disapproved of Hannah's pursuit of Alexander—seeing it as encroaching on their friend's territory—they didn't interfere, as Alexander seemed oblivious. They hadn't anticipated Isabella's intervention. Ultimately, Hannah’s efforts proved fruitless.
It was unbelievable. Yet, they still didn't accept Isabella. Alexander was impeccably characterized and exceptionally capable—almost perfect. They felt only pride and honor in knowing him, never jealousy. Their families also viewed Alexander as a valuable asset. They cherished him, both publicly and privately.
His relationship with Eleanor had seemed idyllic, a beautiful sight to behold. They’d wholeheartedly supported them as a couple. Isabella's arrival shattered that perception. They couldn't tolerate her.
Their astonishment was therefore complete when Roland invited Isabella and even messaged them about it. Although Isabella's public image had changed dramatically following her appearance on a reality show, they believed it was a façade. They hadn't seen much of Alexander in the past six months, being preoccupied with their own relationships or travel, and were unaware of Isabella's transformation.
After hearing his friends' concerns, Roland poured his girlfriend a cup of coffee before speaking.
Everyone fell silent, curious.
"Firstly," Roland began, "she's changed. She's quite appealing now, just as Mr. David and Mrs. Selena described her."
Most present were unfamiliar with David and Selena’s description of Isabella, but Roland and Damien were.
Damien raised an eyebrow. "You mean that Isabella? The lively, adorable, quirky girl, radiant as a miniature sun?"
"What? That shrew?" Josiah exclaimed, his disgust palpable.
Clifford, intrigued, released the girl he was holding. "Is it true? Was she really like that? The girl who used to argue and flip tables with me? Did Mr. David and Mrs. Selena wear rose-tinted glasses?"
Roland shrugged. "Regardless, I find the current Isabella intriguing. I can't speak for others, but Scarlett's situation involved Isabella and Christopher's assistance."
"Perhaps Christopher," Aiden mused.
"No way. Christopher disliked Isabella, right?" Ines said, linking arms with Aiden. Aiden nodded in agreement.
Deborah considered speaking but ultimately remained silent. Audrey, however, said hesitantly, "Maybe my provocation last time triggered this?"
Judgment was difficult.
Roland continued, "Secondly, Alexander seems smitten with Isabella, which piqued my curiosity."
Except for Clifford's and Roland's girlfriends (who were uninformed), everyone present was a friend of Alexander. They were stunned. Even during his relationship with Eleanor, no one had said Alexander was truly fond of her. Though compatible, they weren't overtly affectionate, more like partners in crime. They couldn't imagine Alexander being smitten with anyone else.
"I understand," Josiah said, relieved. "Alexander's too responsible. Isabella's his wife; of course he's invested."
A collective sigh of relief followed; the explanation seemed reasonable. However, Roland shook his head, proceeding to elaborate.
Alexander had recently approached him regarding Scarlett. Roland had wondered about any connection between Alexander and Scarlett. Alexander explained, "She's an aspiring artist from my wife's agency."
The task could have easily been handled by Roland's subordinates. But Alexander's words stunned him. Alexander seeking his help for his wife's sake, with Christopher accompanying her, was unbelievable. Roland had been away for what felt like half a year, and the world had changed drastically. The police could easily have handled the matter. Their relationship had been incredibly convoluted. Christopher was also surprised by Alexander's actions. Alexander was utterly committed, even to the smallest endeavor, unable to bear his wife struggling.
Considering everything, Roland was curious about their relationship. He deeply valued Alexander as a friend. If his friend was committed, he’d naturally respect his choice, regardless of personal feelings. He’d also care for his friend's siblings. Disrespecting Alexander would be like disrespecting him.
The group listened. While not intensely emotional, the situation felt surreal to those who knew Alexander. A silence fell, then Audrey cried out.
Josiah leaned in, concerned. "What's wrong?"
Audrey showed her phone. "I just got a message… Eleanor's back. She heard about the gathering and wants to join us…"
Expressions changed dramatically. Even after hearing about Isabella’s transformation, the mere mention of Eleanor's name at the last gathering had infuriated Isabella. The thought of a confrontation between them was overwhelming.
Josiah chuckled. "Let her come. It's a gathering; everyone’s welcome."
Clifford raised an eyebrow. "We're not deliberately causing trouble. We want to see who truly holds Alexander's heart."
Everyone was eager to see what happened. However, Roland's mouth twitched. He’d invited Isabella. If the two women clashed, he’d bear the blame. He wouldn't be used as a shield. He messaged Alexander, explaining the situation, leaving the decision to them.
Others tried to stop him from alerting Alexander. Many were eager for the drama.
Isabella, equally eager, walked briskly. Seeing Alexander lagging, she said, "Hurry up! We're late!" Alexander frowned, still pondering the people she’d mentioned.
