Chapter 214: I Do Not Deserve This

โ€œWhat just happened? Did I hear correctly? Mr. Josiah has been living off her?โ€ โ€œShouldnโ€™t it be the other way around?โ€ โ€œAre they really boyfriend and girlfriend?โ€

Josiahโ€™s lack of response spurred whispers and discussions among the guests. Whatโ€™s going on? All bark and no bite?

Alexander felt this was the first time Dakota had treated him this way, and it had clearly agitated Josiah. Dakota gave Josiah a frosty look, which he seemed unable to meet. He was momentarily speechless.

Camila, seething with anger, approached Dakota, standing uncomfortably close. โ€œMs. Meadows, are you Josiahโ€™s girlfriend? Why didnโ€™t you tell us?โ€

Sheโ€™s acting suspiciously nice, offering uncharacteristic attention. What is she trying to do?

โ€œThereโ€™s nothing to tell.โ€ Because of Camilaโ€™s closeness, Dakota stepped to the side.

Josiahโ€™s gaze sharpened, fixing intently on Dakota. Dakota wanted to avoid a scene and preferred to discuss their breakup later.

Camila moved closer. โ€œItโ€™s such an important matter. Of course you have to tell us.โ€ She pouted, pretending to lean toward Dakota.

Darn it, thereโ€™s a tower of wine glasses next to her.

Beside their seating area, a tower of eight layers of wine glasses stood near the descending steps. Dakota, already teetering on the edge because of Camilaโ€™s proximity, was in danger of falling if nudged again. The thought was terrifying.

โ€œWatch out!โ€ Isabella shouted from her seat, too late to intervene. Alexander, some distance away, could only pray Dakota would steady herself. She was wearing high heels.

Suddenly, a figure moved swiftly. The clatter of shattering wine glasses and a womanโ€™s scream filled the room.

โ€œCamila!โ€ Audrey exclaimed, disbelievingly glaring at the unharmed Dakota.

Dakota was equally astonished. She turned to see who had saved her.

Damn, I thought some knight in shining armor rescued her, but itโ€™s just you, Christopher! How did you appear out of nowhere?

Christopher thought, How is this not heroic? Isabellaโ€™s plea had spurred the three siblings to act, pulling Dakota back just in time. Ironically, Camila, having lost her balance, was the one who fell, toppling the wine glasses.

โ€œEveryone, stay back.โ€ Caleb rushed to the scene. Camila was crying uncontrollably, thankfully clear of the broken glass, though drenched in wine.

โ€œAudrey, take Camila to clean up,โ€ Caleb urged. Audrey reluctantly retreated with her cousin.

โ€œWhat were you doing? Have you lost your mind?โ€ Audrey rebuked quietly.

โ€œIโ€ฆI heard you mention embarrassing her at the banquet to force the Hamptons to sever ties with them.โ€

โ€œTsk, there was no need for your meddling.โ€ Camila realized Audrey had a plan.

The friends dispersed. As Dakota thanked Christopher, Josiah approached, grabbing her wrist and pulling her away from Christopher. He had just learned of Dakotaโ€™s two-month collaboration with Christopher and resented Christopher's heroic act. Dakota tried to pull free.

Caleb saw Josiah acting foolishly. โ€œJosiah, what are you doing with Ms. Meadows?โ€

Annoyed, Josiah glared at Dakota, then at Caleb. โ€œSheโ€™s my girlfriend. Is it wrong for me to want her to meet my friends?โ€

Even Caleb was surprised. โ€œGirlfriend?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ Josiah seemed to want Dakota to greet Caleb, but she was uncooperative.

Caleb cut to the chase. โ€œJust treat her well. Donโ€™t stir up trouble. Once the party is over, introduce your girlfriend to Mom and Dad.โ€ He apologized and returned to his duties.

Dakota was led to their table, the silence punctuated by anticipation. The Quirk siblings observed intently from a nearby bar.

Josiah seated Dakota. She felt uncomfortable. โ€œCan you let go of me? Iโ€™m still workingโ€ฆโ€

Josiahโ€™s temper flared. โ€œAre you defying me? Thereโ€™s a limit to your tantrums.โ€

Heโ€™s hopeless. Alexander and his siblings agreed. David and Selena, overhearing only the emotional cries, exclaimed, โ€œWhat? Whoโ€™s hopeless?โ€

Dakota turned to Josiah. โ€œIโ€™ve signed a contract with your sister-in-law for two hundred thousand. I need to do makeup; I donโ€™t have time to sit here.โ€ Josiah didnโ€™t question if it was a scam.

โ€œDid you know who I was before this?โ€ Josiah asked, confused.

โ€œI did,โ€ Dakota said coldly. โ€œYour โ€˜belovedโ€™ sister-in-law hired me for your class reunion. I saw you there, Mr. Josiah.โ€

Josiah missed her sarcasm. โ€œThen why didnโ€™t you question me or get angry? Why ask for money?โ€

Dakota laughed scornfully. โ€œI didnโ€™t want to borrow money before we sorted out our feelings. But I had no other options. I thought even if you were deceiving me, you still cared. I believed youโ€™d help me, but you didnโ€™t.โ€

Josiahโ€™s face paled. He recalled rejecting her and felt suffocated. He hadnโ€™t meant to hurt her.

โ€œThere might have been a misunderstanding. I can give you the money now.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s too late. Iโ€™ve received my payment. I donโ€™t need your help, nor you,โ€ Dakota declared. Josiah was stunned. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œYou ask why I didnโ€™t lay my cards on the table? Because I was waiting for you to come clean. That was my last chance.โ€

Last chance? The thing I was planning to tell her on her birthdayโ€ฆ

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ Josiah exploded.

โ€œI intended to discuss this privately, but since the person Iโ€™m supposedly in a relationship with doesnโ€™t seem to exist, itโ€™s as if Iโ€™ve never been in love. Mr. Josiah, stop claiming youโ€™re my boyfriend.โ€

Dakotaโ€™s unwavering gaze unsettled Josiah.

โ€œWhat do you mean I donโ€™t exist? Shouldnโ€™t you beโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t think that after you fooled me for two years by pretending to be poor, Iโ€™d be overjoyed to find out youโ€™re rich, right?โ€

Josiahโ€™s complexion changed. His voice trembled. โ€œIs it wrong for me to want you to have a better life?โ€

โ€œMr. Josiah, I crave love, but yours is too insincere. I aspire to a better life, but not with you. Iโ€™ll be departing from your world, and Iโ€™d appreciate it if you could refrain from bothering me.โ€

Dakota took a bracelet from her bag and placed it on the table. โ€œI donโ€™t deserve this. Iโ€™m giving it back.โ€

Deborah gasped, recognizing the bracelet. Damien quickly pulled her back, fearing her reaction. He was speechless at Josiahโ€™s actions.

As Dakota stood, someone shouted from the stairs, โ€œOh no, Audreyโ€™s necklace has been stolen! Whereโ€™s the makeup artist?โ€
