Chapter 285: Oliver and Damien Are Switched at Birth
Isabella and Alexander both sensed something was amiss in Ava's reaction. The Quirk family, having learned Isabella's style of gossip, eagerly anticipated a dramatic revelation.
David commented, "Her reaction doesn't suggest she thinks Oliver is unworthy of Ruby."
Selena recalled, "Remember that soap opera we watched recently? The one where the mother opposed the male lead and the second female lead?"
Evian, excitedly flushed, exclaimed, "Exactly! Ava looks like she's about to burst into tears. 'You two can't be together, you're half-siblings!' Oh my god, Oliver and Damien were switched at birth!"
Isabella's inner monologue revealed the shocking truth. The Quirk family was stunned. What had begun as gossip was now confirmed. Their expressions were priceless.
While they enjoyed the gossip, the reality was undeniably absurd for those involved. Alexander's face instantly turned icy, confirming his suspicions. Damien's years of suffering were a cruel joke. His stern gaze fixed on Ava, who had gone deathly pale. He considered her unforgivable for mistreating the children, regardless of her reasons.
Isabella, engrossed in further investigation, failed to notice Alexander's change, but the others felt the chill and shivered.
Roland, startled, asked, "What's wrong?"
Elaine, exasperated, replied, "He's disgusted by the Willis family's shamelessness. But why is Mrs. Willis opposing her own husband? Sergio's clearly trying to secure a good future for the family and Ruby, and Ruby seems agreeable. Mrs. Willis's opposition is strange."
Ines wondered, "Are they playing good cop, bad cop?"
Aiden added, "If so, her acting is remarkable. She was as pale as a corpse."
Roland, frowning, corrected, "It's not disgust, but fear."
Alexander was already planning how to expose the truth. He couldn't remain idle. Ava was in a terrible situation; though breaking down, she needed to compose herself. Oliver couldn't marry Ruby.
Sergio's expression turned hostile. Even Ruby resented Ava.
Sergio said, shooting a look at Ava, whom he perceived as confused, "Don't be foolish. I know you think our daughter is young, reluctant to marry so soon. But sooner or later, she will marry. Isn't it better to marry into a familiar family for peace of mind?"
Ava couldn't be confused! She was acutely aware, yet speechless. Could she reveal the children were switched, and Oliver couldn't marry his half-sister, Ruby?
After hearing the gossip and Sergio's words, Isabella lamented the situation. The Quirk men reacted strongly. "Enough! This is destroying our values!" Ava's experience was a perfect example of reaping what you sow.
Ava, trembling, desperately shook her head. "No, I can't agree! Sergio, let's go home. I'm tired."
Ruby pleaded, "Mom, what are you doing?"
Sergio, also curious about Ava's opposition, wouldn't relent without an explanation. Ava wouldn't admit her actions, and everyone knew about Oliver and Ruby now. Isabella's inner monologue spiraled: "Don't let me read those scandalous details! I don't want my worldview shattered! I don't know anything!" Even forced, Ava wouldn't admit the truth, making her denials weak. The Quirk family agreed; Sergio wouldn't miss this opportunity.
Alexander's brow relaxed. Sergio was determined; even if Ava played dumb, she couldn't escape. She was trapped. All they needed was to wait and act.
Before the Willis family could react, Oliver exploded with anger. He hadn't expected Ava's opposition, and the mocking gazes and whispers from others stung. They mocked his failure with Deborah, and even suggesting Ruby was too good for him. He was seething with embarrassment and anger.
What does that mean? Am I not good enough for Ruby? She's not good enough for me! How dare Ava look down on me?
Ava had usually praised him, even plotting with him against Damien. But her daughter's involvement revealed her true colors. She had played him. Lydia and Deborah's rejections hadn't bothered him, but Ava's actions deeply offended him.
"What's wrong? Are you looking down on me, Mrs. Willis?" His sarcastic tone and the use of "Mrs. Willis" instead of "Aunt Ava" showed his fury.
She doesn't look down on you; she thinks too highly of you! Isabella thought sarcastically.
Watching Ava wobble under Oliver's mockery, Isabella felt a strong urge to express her disgust. Every villain gets their comeuppance!
