Listen to this chapter:

Eric's family had recently passed away. Aunt Joanna's situation was uncertain. David and the others felt temporary relief.

Alexander paused, his gaze subtly sweeping over Isabella. Eric spoke first. "I'm sorry, Joanna was supposed to join us today, but" A look of gentle embarrassment softened his stern face. "Joanna is three months pregnant!"

Astonishment and joy filled the room. Uncle Eric and Aunt Joanna were older parents, making the news even more surprising. Isabella's gaze shifted to David and Selena, who shuddered. In their fifties, they felt the pregnancy was beyond their capacity; they already had the most children among the Quirk siblings. The other siblings chuckled.

Eric explained, "Joanna had a minor car accident that jeopardized her pregnancy. That's why we didn't announce it sooner. She's recovering. I'll bring her when she's stable."

David and Selena reassured him there was no rush. Lionel and Marley were overjoyed.

Lionel said passionately, "Joanna is older, so your family must care for her. Spend more time with her. You can visit on my birthday." He implied this might be his last grandchild.

Seeing Lionel's happiness, Dylan announced, "Grandpa, there's something you don't know. When Mom was in the accident, a girl rescued her. She saved Mom and my unborn sibling. We're deeply grateful and have decided to adopt her."

Silence fell. Lionel was startled. "Huh? What happened?" He looked to Eric for clarification.

Eric explained, "The girl who saved Joanna is a friend of Janice's. She's from an orphanage where Joanna did charity work. She's grateful to Joanna and often visited. They were together during the accident. This girl risked her life to save Joanna."

"The child is brave, kind, and grateful," Marley exclaimed.

Eric said, "I wanted to give her a gift"

"Dad, Mom said that would be insulting. She's genuine. Why can't she become family? I consider her my sister," Dylan countered.

Eric said, "Enough. Adopting isn't simple. Later, I'll talk to Grandfather and Alexander."

Eric's reticence was noticeable. His siblings remained silent, while the younger ones exchanged glances. Why was Eric so secretive?

David and the others found Eric's reaction unsurprising. Isabella understood. The Quirk family's interests were intertwined. An adopted child would benefit significantly, a prospect even Bennet wouldn't dare consider, as it would encroach on everyone's interests. While the assets weren't the primary concern, Eric's cautious nature meant he avoided actions that might cause resentment.
