Chapter 43: I Suggest You Two Break Up
Rosalie was taken aback. Dominic had never been so harsh with her. Knowing his concern, she quickly replied, โIโm sorry, Dom. I was held up and missed your call.โ
โIs your brother giving you a hard time because of our relationship?โ he asked, worried.
โDonโt worry, Dom. Chris just has a quick temper. Heโs mad because I didnโt tell them about us beforehand. Itโll be fine once I explain.โ
Dominicโs disdainful voice echoed through the phone. โWhy is he still meddling? Rosie, youโre an adult, independent, and free. You have the right to make your own decisions and donโt have to tell them everything.โ
โIโm the youngest. They care about me,โ Rosalie said, smiling. โOh, right, my eldest sister just told meโฆโ
She stopped. She wanted to share Isabellaโs secret but remembered Evianโs warning.
โWhat?โ
โUmโฆ Nothing.โ
Dominic grumbled, clearly upset. โAre you keeping something from me? Weโre a couple. There shouldnโt be any secrets. Weโll share our lives together. I keep no secrets from you; you should be completely open with me. It saddens me you keep things from me. It seems I love you more than you love me.โ
Rosalieโs face turned red. โNo, thatโs not it.โ
She hesitated, her upbringing preventing her from revealing Isabella's secret. She could confide in Dom, but it wasn't her secret to tell.
Dominic, uneasy, probed, โDo your family members look down on me? Do they think Iโm not good enough for you?โ
Rosalie was shocked. โHow could you think that? Youโre exceptional!โ
โHah. Youโre the Quirk Group heiress, and Iโm nothing more than a poor person in your familyโs eyes,โ Dominic sneered.
Rosalie grew anxious, fearing his misunderstanding. โMy family doesnโt care about that. All that matters is that I love you.โ
โIs that so? But it doesnโt matter if they donโt agree. Weโre in love. Iโve chosen you, and no one can tear us apart,โ Dominic declared assertively.
Rosalie, shy, responded with a soft hum.
Later that evening, the entire family gathered for dinner for the first time. Rosalie was happy to meet her nephew, Callahan, giving him gifts and snacks, delighted to no longer be the youngest.
After Evian put Callahan to bed, everyone gathered in the living room. The conversation naturally turned to Rosalieโs relationship. David and Alexander, having gathered information, understood the situation. Dominic had made a terrible first impression on Christopher, who complained about Dominicโs public displays of affection, deeming them disrespectful. However, they decided not to dwell on this; such behavior was common among young couples.
David asked curiously, โYou mentioned your professor hired him temporarily. Doesnโt he have a regular job?โ
Rosalie said, โHeโs planning to start his own art gallery. Heโs self-studying and waiting for Madeline and me to graduate so he can host exhibitions for us.โ
Everyone was taken aback, except Isabella. Selena asked, puzzled, โDidnโt you always say art is priceless? That your paintings are not for sale?โ
Rosalie chuckled. โHaha, I was young and naive. The more money my art fetches, the more it means people appreciate it! Plus, Dom said the money can be donated to charity.โ
The family fell silent. They understood her logic, but something felt amiss. Isabella thought, So heโs unemployed? Can he even support himself?
Rosalie immediately turned to Isabella, disbelieving. Itโs true! I can hear her thoughts!
The others cleared their throats, reminding Rosalie to keep it a secret. However, Isabellaโs thoughts revealed something crucial.
Christopher immediately questioned, โWhat does he live on? Is he mooching off his parents, or you?โ
Rosalie was agitated. โChris, why must you put it that way? Weโve just started dating. How could I ask him about his finances? Thatโs bizarre. He rents a place and occasionally takes part-time work at the university. Heโs busy learning about the art industry.โ
David asked, โDoes his original field of study relate to his plans?โ
Rosalie hesitated, shaking her head timidly. โHeโฆ didnโt attend universityโฆ He went to vocational school.โ
Isabella thought, He never attended university or high school. Heโs been out of school for years.
The Quirksโ expressions changed (except Alexanderโs). They had never interfered, but the difference between Dominic and Rosalie was vast.
Rosalie, sensing their judgment, anxiously said, โEducation doesnโt define character. His familyโs financial situation was limited; they had to support Maddieโs art studies. You arenโt going to look down on him and oppose my relationship, are you?โ
The Quirks were stumped. Alexander asked, โWhy would you think that?โ
Rosalie froze. The others were also confused. Alexanderโs expression remained indifferent. โThe Rosie I know wouldnโt think that way. Who misled you?โ
Rosalie panicked. โNoโฆ No one. Isnโt this common logic?โ
Isabella thought, Silly girl. Itโs your boyfriend.
Rosalie became flustered. Isabella observed, Sheโs not adept at lying.
Before Rosalie could calm down, Alexander said bluntly, โYou two arenโt right for eachโฆโ
