Chapter 6: The Gossip System and the Mind-Reading Skill
Isabella had transmigrated three days prior due to the Grim Reaper's mistake. Being an orphan, her body was quickly disposed of, rendering resurrection impossible. To compensate for his error, the Grim Reaper rewarded her with this transmigration.
Thus, Isabella inherited the memories and identity of the original body's owner—a delicate, pampered young woman. Her parents had died unexpectedly, entrusting their only daughter to the Quirk family on their deathbeds, fearing she would be bullied by relatives. The Quirks, compassionate toward her plight, took her in and loved her as their own.
However, traumatized by the tragedy, the original owner became paranoid and withdrawn. She never truly connected with the Quirks, becoming a gloomy recluse. Despite this, she fell in love with Alexander at first sight. Fearing she would have no reason to remain with the Quirks after graduation, she made a move on him.
After getting Alexander drunk and sleeping with him, they were caught, and Alexander despised her. Seeing her near death, however, he reluctantly took responsibility and married her.
Following this distressing incident, she spiraled into despair, isolating herself for days until her heart abruptly gave out from the stress. That's when Isabella transmigrated, her face and name changing instantly.
Isabella refused to remain a resentful wife. "Even if Alexander is handsome and wealthy," she thought, "what's the point if I can't touch him? I don't want to live like a widow. I've never even been with a man before, so I have to make up for that in this life. It's fine that he dislikes me; I can extort a huge sum of money from him in a divorce. Wealth won't be a worry."
Unfortunately, the Grim Reaper informed her that only Alexander could initiate a divorce; the original owner never would. This was her "destiny."
Upon expressing her displeasure, the Grim Reaper gave her another gift—the Gossip System, a power to uncover people's secrets, much to Isabella's delight.
Reflecting, Isabella realized that life at the Quirk manor wouldn't be so bad. She'd be free, wealthy, and have a rarely-home husband—a comfortable existence. If she cheated, she could blame Alexander for neglecting his marital duties.
She hadn't expected her opportunity to arrive so quickly. The recent incident easily led to the divorce she desired. But now…
It was evening when they left the police station. Alexander led Isabella to the car. The silence in the car was heavy.
Isabella leaned against the window, disheartened. "I should have made a bigger scene! I missed out on two hundred million!"
Alexander only heard "two hundred million" echoing in his mind. Is she short of money?
Soon, a notification appeared on Isabella's phone: three million had been deposited.
Isabella gasped, her eyes wide. She turned to Alexander. Could he have sent it to the wrong person?
Alexander was watching her. His eyelashes drooped slightly, shadowing his eyes. "I'm sorry for wrongly accusing you," he said solemnly. "This is compensation."
He felt regretful but unsure how to make amends. They hadn't spent much time together, and he didn't know her preferences. Hearing her internal mutterings about money, he'd simply transferred funds.
"Oh," Isabella replied calmly, feigning indifference. In reality, she was ecstatic. Three million! Does he have a transfer limit? Three million is nothing compared to the two hundred million I missed! I got three million for being falsely accused! You're so generous, Alexander! Accuse me again; I don't mind!
Alexander's lips twitched. Her thoughts are so different from her expression! One cannot judge a book by its cover. He finally saw the real Isabella.
He noticed her struggling to suppress a smile. Her eyes sparkled, her beauty enhanced by the neon lights outside. She had a delicate nose, rosy lips, and smooth hair. She looked ethereal.
Though he disliked her initially, he had to admit her captivating beauty. He hadn't noticed before, due to her gloomy expression. Now, she seemed spirited and radiant.
What's with this sudden change? He found it bizarre that she seemed aware of many things she shouldn't have known.
Perhaps her transformation stemmed from her newfound power, changing her outlook and allowing a carefree life. He could only justify it that way.
Recalling the incident, he asked, "Why didn't you argue more?"
Isabella, inspired, said, "You wanted a divorce anyway. It's just an excuse."
Alexander frowned. "The truth matters! And I never intended to find a reason to divorce you." Their marriage was messy, but he didn't intend to remain stagnant.
Isabella was surprised, but internally thought, You're such a good man, my dear ex-husband!
Alexander's face fell. We're not even divorced yet! Is she convinced we'll divorce?
Isabella's inner thoughts answered him: Happiness can't be forced. Your first crush will return soon. It's better if I'm gone. Ms. Gates mentioned a misunderstanding. You'll reunite. I don't want to be a third wheel. If you don't divorce me, she might accuse you of an affair. I'm doing this for your own good.
Alexander's breath hitched. He'd moved on from Eleanor. I'm not hung up on my ex! That's why I didn't investigate Ms. Gates.
He couldn't let Isabella know he heard her thoughts. Perhaps out of stubbornness, he said, "Stop overthinking. We won't divorce as long as you behave yourself!" He wanted to prove himself to her.
Isabella nonchalantly replied, "Oh." Hah! I'll make you remember that when you get entangled with your first crush!
She won't believe me, huh? Alexander sighed. Then he heard, "Wait."
Is she changing her mind? he wondered.
It's good he's resolute. If he divorces me for his first crush, he might feel guilty and give me more alimony.
Alexander's expression darkened.
Isabella continued: I'll consider living with him as an investment. The money will be my capital. I can buy a house, get a cute sugar baby!
Alexander was furious. A sugar baby? Does she have someone in mind? That's why she's fine with divorce? Wait. This was my fault. I shouldn't think of her this way.
Isabella's thoughts raced on: It doesn't have to be adorable. A masculine one is fine, with eight-pack abs!
Alexander was speechless. But I have eight-pack abs…
I can't wait for the divorce! Isabella thought.
Alexander clenched his fists. He couldn't tell if she truly wanted a divorce or had given up. If she wanted one, she would have asked. Since she didn't, she probably didn't want it. I swear it's not because she wants more alimony!
The car pulled into the Quirk manor. Another car was parked there.
As they entered, they heard a voice: "Mom, Dad, this is Sean, the child Evian and I are adopting."
Alexander realized his sister and her husband had arrived. Before he could react, he saw Isabella hurrying toward the living room.
D*mn! More juicy gossip! High society is full of drama. I almost don't want a divorce now! If I divorce Alexander, I won't be able to enjoy this!
Watching her eager expression, Alexander was speechless. This is definitely not why she didn't ask for a divorce! And what is it now? Wait for me!
