Chapter 52
โProfessor, I was wrong. Iโll return everything Josie gave me, and I wonโt go near her again. Iโve embarrassed you, but it wonโt happen again.โ
While David was still dealing with Vincent, Natalie quickly contacted her sources to have the defamatory posts about Josie removed from the internet.
She refreshed the page several times, and seeing that no one was still spreading rumors about Josieโs inappropriate behavior or claiming she had used connections to stay in Davidโs team, she finally let out a relieved sigh.
It looked like her attempt to ruin Josieโs reputation wouldnโt work after all. Josieโd been sparedโfor now. But she knew there would be other opportunities to deal with her eventually.
Natalie felt a tinge of regret.
โYouโre finally aware youโve made a fool of yourself, huh? Looks like thereโs still hope for you after all!โ Davidโs anger had cooled a little, thanks to Aidenโs efforts to calm him down, though he was still visibly upset.
He glared at Vincent. โI know youโve always had a good relationship with Josie. I understand youโre upset about her leaving the team and that you want to convince her to come back.
โBut Iโve said it over and overโwhat matters most for my students isnโt just their academic ability, itโs their character. That girl may seem honest, but sheโs actually pretty petty. If not, how could she have manipulated all five of you into protecting her?
โNow that sheโs lost what she wanted, sheโs angry and trying to drag you all down with her. And here you are, feeling sorry for her, thinking about bringing her back. Youโve fallen right into her trap.
โVincent, we in academia know that our reputation is just as important as our research results. Remember that, and donโt go near her again.โ
Vincent lowered his head. โI understand, Professor.โ
โGood,โ David nodded. โNow, all of you, listen up!โ His tone hardened. โFocus on preparing for the upcoming competition. Donโt waste another second on that girl.
โNow that she has a new team, we wish her well. We hope she graduates smoothly and doesnโt let us down. But thatโs where it ends.
โWe wonโt dwell on this any longer. Everyone, go back to your work!โ
David waved them off, his expression weary.
The others exchanged looks, surprised at how the situation had been raised to a boiling point and then just as easily dropped. Vincent, in particular, hadnโt expected David to let him off without any punishment.
He rubbed his stomach, thinking, โWell, that kick wasnโt so bad after all!โ
It seemed like David still valued his teacherโstudent bond with Josie. No wonder so many students wanted him as their mentorโhe really was a great teacher.
After the others left, David gestured for Aiden to stay behind.
The two walked into the office together.
David motioned for Aiden to sit. โWhatโs your take on Josie?โ
โShe clearly set up Vincent!โ Aiden said, his teeth clenched.
โShe couldnโt accept leaving the team, and she knew that even if she came back, we wouldnโt welcome her. So instead of trying to come back, she decided to cut ties completely. Sheโs worried about being seen as someone who was eliminated, so sheโs trying to clear her name by playing the victim.โ
David shook his head. โYouโre underestimating her. She doesnโt need to clear her name. All she needs is to find someone more powerful than me. If she can get a bigger backer, the students and teachers will start looking at her with a whole new perspective.โ
โBut who in the entire medical school could possibly be more powerful than you?โ Aiden asked, confused.
โWeโre in the top team of the most popular department. Sheโs joined a lesserโknown team now, hasnโt she?โ
David smiled faintly. โProfessor Wilcourt has connections to the Reedshaw family. As long as Josie graduates smoothly, with her dualโdegree background, sheโll have her pick of hospitals in Aloville.
โAnd sheโll gain recognition in the research institute too!โ
Aiden shook his head. โDual degrees? Itโs not that simple. Besides, if Professor Wilcourt were really that powerful, why would she still be second to you at the university?โ
โYou donโt get it,โ David sighed. โIf it werenโt for my academic standing, do you think I could hold her in check here? Thatโs exactly what sheโs upset about, and why she sought out Josie.โ
A bitter expression crossed Davidโs face. โI underestimated her. I never thought sheโd be so calculating at such a young ageโฆโ
โProfessor, what exactly is going on? What else has Josie done?โ Aiden asked, growing more concerned.
