Chapter 52
The village was plagued with poverty. Lana might not have cost them much to support, but no one really wanted to help her. She wouldn't have been able to get into school if she hadn't threatened the village elder with her life. However, she had to work for it by helping around the village. Luna had done everything, including but not limited to doing laundry, cooking meals, feeding the pigs, and grazing the cows.
She had never felt love from anyone since she was a little girl. Incidentally, that was why she couldn’t understand the pain of losing a loved one. Although she might have been reborn and received a second shot at life, she still couldn’t fully connect herself to that level of emotional pain. For some reason, however, it changed when she caught Rhett’s gaze.
His eyes were usually laced with coldness, but there was sorrow in them this time. The sight of it made her heart feel heavy. There was this unbearable feeling that washed over her in a matter of seconds. It turned out this was how it felt to have a loved one ripped away mercilessly. It was truly a terrible feeling.
Luna clutched her chest before she took the bus home. It was afternoon by the time she arrived at the dormitory, and the gloom in her heart was still plaguing her. Nicole looked at her with concern. “What’s the matter? Why do you look so sad?”
“I have no idea either,” Luna rubbed her chest. “I couldn’t help but feel sorrow when I saw the look on Rhett’s face.”
Nicole thought she understood what was going on. “I knew it. Luna, you’re just the kindest and most adorable soul in the world. You couldn’t stand it when someone else was in pain.”
“I’m not!” Luna shook her head. “I’m ruthless toward Wyatt…”
Nothing could make her forgive them.
“You’re absolutely adorable!” Nicole chuckled and reached out to pinch Luna’s cheeks. “You should be ruthless to people who mean you harm. I have to go to a lecture in a while. Instead of staying in the dorm by yourself, you should take a scroll outside.”
“Mr. Wilder Senior’s death has saddened a lot of people, but there’s nothing we can do about it. So, let’s not feel disheartened. Instead, you should spend more time on medical books.”
“You are learning medical skills from the Wilder family now. If you can master them, you are also enhancing their reputation. He would be thrilled about it if he knew what you’ve done for his family.”
Luna felt better after she heard what Nicole said. “You’re right. I shouldn’t be downcast. I should put more effort in my studies and make Professor Wilder proud of…”
“I’m off to my lecture now. Ciao.” Nicole shouldered her bag and went out the door.
Immediately after she left, Luna saw an abandoned toy under the desk. It was a wooden building block that would resemble a rabbit after assembling, which was her spirit animal. It was a birthday present that Russell had given her years ago. Luna used to love it very much, but it resembled an eyesore now. She picked it up, turned around, and went out of her dorm.
There was a big trash can in front of her dormitory entrance, and she would frequently see fresh bouquets and bagged teddy bear plushies in it. They were all tossed after some guys confessed but failed to win some ladies’ hearts.
Lowering her head, Luna looked at the rabbit in her hand, and she snickered for some reason. They had spent years together, yet all her seniors had never given her gifts that were over 100 dollars, even though they kept saying that she was like a sister to them. They had taken the concept of “It’s the thought that counts” to the extreme. Ironically, they would always choose their own birthday presents and ask Luna to buy for them. They made it sound nice by saying they didn’t want to bother her with such a trivial matter and waste her time picking gifts.
Now that she searched her memories, the cheapest presents she bought them had always cost more than 100 dollars, at the lowest. If she remembered it correctly, she had given Ethan an authentic game card. In her past life, she learned that he sold it off for 500 dollars years later.
Luna was the poorest person in the team. She wore shaggy clothes and ate the cheapest dishes; unless it was absolutely necessary, she wouldn’t change her everyday items. None of her seniors seemed to have seen it. They would still pick on her and take advantage of her every chance they got. Luna’s time, energy, and talents had to be spent in their favor. Meanwhile, all they had given her was the lowly title of being one of Willson’s mentees. In the end, they even personally ripped it away from her.
She stood in front of the trash can, raised her hand, and dropped the rabbit toy into the pile of trash. As fate would have it, Luna turned around and immediately saw Russell, who stared at her in shock.
