Chapter 10: The Apology

In the side hall, Violet coldly observed Molly, who was earnestly apologizing. Had she not known her cousin so well, she might have believed her.

"Please believe me, Violet," Molly pleaded, her voice sincere. "Jessica came to me in tears, begging for help clearing her name. I only helped her because I was soft-hearted. After you left yesterday, Prince Yuvan scolded me. He said the workshop was meant to benefit women, and that I shouldn't spread false rumors. I've realized my mistake. Will you forgive me?"

Violet didn't believe a word. She doubted Molly's claim of kindness, and she didn't believe Yuvan would ever say such a thing about the workshop. She remembered Avis, Carissa's aunt and Yuvan's former princess consort, and how she had met her end—a fact known only to a few, including Violet.

Violet listened calmly as Molly finished, watching two perfectly formed tears of regret fall. Her cousin hadn't learned much since becoming Yuvan's princess consort, but she had mastered acting. Molly must have spent considerable time watching plays.

"Nice words," Violet said. "But if you truly came to apologize, why didn't you send word? How did you know I'd be at the estate?"

Molly's face stiffened. She hadn't expected such a question. Fortunately, Plum intervened. She curtsied and explained, "Ms. Spencer, Her Grace cried all night and didn't dare come to apologize. His Highness said that if she made a mistake, she should admit it and ask for your forgiveness to avoid harming your bond. Her Grace immediately ordered gifts. She said she would wait for your return if you weren't at the estate."

That excuse wouldn't fool Violet. After reflecting on her impulsive actions the previous day, she realized the importance of patience and was curious to see what would unfold.

Following Plum's explanation, Violet said, "Indeed, Prince Yuvan is right. We're family. We shouldn't let this harm our relationship. As long as you help quell the rumors, I forgive you."

"Really?" Molly wiped away tears, but doubt lingered. Yesterday, Violet had been shouting threats; today, she was accommodating.

"We're family. Whatever happened yesterday is over. Don't take the slap to heart," Violet said with a calm smile.

Resentment flashed in Molly's eyes. Being slapped in front of Yuvan had been humiliating, especially since he hadn't defended her. Instead, he'd sent her to apologize—and invited Violet to dinner at the estate tomorrow. Now, Violet had mentioned the slap in front of the servants. The humiliation was overwhelming.

"Honestly, Violet," Molly said, her tone bitter. "Why resort to violence? We could have talked."

"I have a fiery temper. I'm not as calm as you," Violet said, assessing her cousin. "Are you still upset?"

Molly forced a smile. "If I were upset, would I have come?"

"True," Violet laughed. "Let's put this behind us, shall we?"

Molly sensed malice behind Violet's dazzling smile.

Taking a deep breath, she said, "Of course. By the way, we haven't caught up. I'd like to formally invite you to dinner tomorrow. We've hired an Ebonflow chef."

So, this is about getting me to Edgeview Estate, Violet thought. She smirked. "Sure."

The sudden shift in topic revealed Molly's lack of cunning. Molly's shoulders relaxed. "Good. I'll wait for you tomorrow evening."
