Chapter 1052
Thanks to Carissa's efforts, the Supreme Court was overwhelmed. She tirelessly attended to Rafael, ensuring his comfort and well-being. The evidence was gathered, but the Court needed to verify it before arresting the culprits. While this was technically unnecessary for Rafael, the criminalsโ powerful backers necessitated his involvement. It was better for him, rather than Carissa, to face their anger.
Max, meanwhile, trained with renewed vigor, confident that a purged Garrison Unit would become a strong capital defense. His joy proved premature. Following the Supreme Court's investigation, petitions flooded in, arguing that the Garrison Unit's and Capital Guard's duties overlapped excessively, advocating for the Garrison Unit's disbandment. This claim held merit, prompting Carissa to formally request a redefinition and separation of their roles.
Salvador didn't rule on the matter that day but summoned Carissa to the royal study. "Yesterday, I visited the Queen Dowager," he began, settling into his seat. "She inquired about the women's academy. How is your progress?"
"Your Majesty, the academy building repairs are complete. We have acquired the necessary supplies and are seeking a teacher," Carissa replied.
"The Queen Dowager takes the academy seriously; focus on that. Regarding the Garrison Unit, leave it for now."
Carissa, unsurprisingly, recognized the king's disapproval of her request. She surmised that Salvador likely intended to disband the Garrison Unit, reassigning some personnel to the Capital Guard, others to the Nightsteel Guard, or dismissing them outright.
Observing her obedience, Salvador felt relief. At least she wasn't like Rafael, a growing source of trouble. He could tolerate Rafael for now, but he looked forward to correcting the man's arrogance. His expression softening, he said, "The Queen Dowager misses you; go visit her when you have the chance."
Carissa nodded. "Of course, Your Majesty. I will visit the Queen Dowager with my mother-in-law on my next day off."
Salvador nodded slightly, his gaze lingering on Carissa. Despite her formal attire, her elegance was evident. A fleeting memory stirred, quickly suppressed. As king, certain things were beyond his reach. "Alright. You're dismissed," he declared, waving his hand.
"I will take my leave, Your Majesty," Carissa bowed and departed.
At the corridor's end, Barrett stopped her. "Carissa," he called urgently.
Carissa paused, meeting his gaze under the watchful eyes of others. Her brow furrowed slightly. "Is there something you need, Deputy Commander Warren?"
Barrett studied her. "I wish to warn you, Commander Sinclair. His Majesty knows you're behind the Garrison Unit's plans and has his own arrangements. Focus on your duties and avoid upsetting His Majesty; you might suffer the consequences."
Carissa remained impassive. "Thank you for the advice, Deputy Commander Warren," she replied calmly.
Barrett, surprised, asked, "You knew?"
"I would never presume His Majesty's intentions. If that's all, I must leave." She started to walk away.
Barrett called after her, frustrated. "There's no need to distance yourself; I offered friendly advice."
Carissa didn't respond. Barrett blocked her path. Carissa stopped, clearly annoyed. "If you have something to say, say it directly. Don't hide behind false concern."
Barrett hesitated, his words halting. "Iโฆ I wondered if you know how Westhaven intends to deal with Aurora. Could youโฆ tell me?"
Carissa gave him a cool look. "I don't know," she replied flatly, and walked away. Barrett lowered his gaze, not pursuing her.
