Chapter 1086
The next day, both the Garrison Unit and the Capital Guard learned of the attack on Douglas. An assassin had broken into his home, severely injuring him; he vomited blood and nearly died. The physician declared him likely bedridden and incapacitated for life, able only to perform basic functions.
Naturally, both units launched a full-scale manhunt. Such a brazen attack on a government official within the king's domain was unheard of. Carissa's investigation uncovered a witness who revealed that a martial artist, driven by rage over Douglas's role in his sister's death, had attacked him.
Further investigation proved the rumors surrounding Karen's defilement false. She had remained pure, but Douglas, believing the rumors, had cast her out. Betrayed and wounded, Karen had taken her own life by jumping into the river. Skye Embroidery handled her burial arrangements. This was the official story, and its revelation ignited public outrage against Douglas, while the martial artist was widely praised. A crowd gathered at Karen's grave, offering flowers and prayers for her rebirth.
The grave, however, was ceremonial; Karen had buried the clothes she wore when attempting suicide there. Alana and Leah had helped create it, marking the end of her seventeen years. Violet had given her a new nameโSoraya.
Now, Soraya sat in a carriage with Carissa and Violet, watching townsfolk gather at her grave, offering prayers and flowers. Listening to their heartfelt wishes, Soraya's eyes welled with tears. She leaned on Violet's shoulder, crying softly. "No one has ever cared for me like this. If I ever think of dying again, I would be betraying all the sacrifices you made for me, betraying your kindness. Rest assured, I will live my life well, Your Grace, Ms. Spencer."
Violet's eyes were also red-rimmed. Unlike Carissa, she often acted on impulse, uncertain of her actions' meaning. Even her involvement with Skye Embroidery stemmed from Carissa's insistence. Yet, seeing Soraya's second chance, Violet felt the purpose of her actions, finding her own sense of worth.
After returning Soraya to the workshop, Carissa addressed the rumor-monger: the deputy steward at Crystal Springs, known for profiting from gossip. Instead of handling it herself, she informed Nathaniel, who swiftly and ruthlessly dealt with the man.
Time slipped away, and the summer heat of July descended upon the capital, transforming it into an unbearable furnace.
On July 3rd, Yuvan visited Hell Monarch Estate to bid farewell before returning to Valken. Rafael welcomed him and his family; their prior visit to Edgeview Estate fostered a degree of familiarity. Yuvan, who had been in the capital for over a year, hoped to arrange marriages for his children but had been unsuccessful. He arrived laden with gifts, mostly for Violet.
Clad in a tight-fitting, brocade tunic with intricate gold serpent embroidery, his face lightly powdered and his clothing heavily scented, Yuvan's presence overwhelmed Rafael with sneezing fits. A cherrywood candle was lit to mask the overpowering perfume. Molly kept Violet close, and Yuvanโs intense gaze lingered on Violet, despite her obvious impatience. He mentioned visiting the Spencer family on his return to Valken and asked if she would accompany him.
Violet bluntly replied, "No."
Yuvan chuckled. "If you're not coming along, would you like me to bring a letter or gift back to your father?" he asked.
