Chapter 1092

Jocelyn and the others' faces were stiff from forced laughter. Never before had they been so humiliated. Being compelled to laugh for two hours by Mabel was a profound insult and a source of immense shame.

They immediately reported the incident to Catherine, known for her kindness and gentle nature. Catherine typically taught etiquette, bookkeeping, household management, and oversight. She had yet to introduce more advanced subjects, considering the girls' diverse backgrounds. Regardless of their future marriages, managing a household was essential.

Most had already mastered basic etiquette; Catherine only needed to refine their skills for proper guest interaction. Account management was a crucial skill for women, as they still largely controlled household finances. Mastering these basics would allow them to progress.

For women, gaining a voice amongst men required extra effort; true equality in conversation remained elusive.

Catherine's teaching style led Jocelyn to believe she was part of a noble family, where class distinctions were rigidly observed. Servants, regardless of their employer, were inherently inferior. Jocelyn was certain Catherine would never tolerate a maid insulting young ladies of their station.

After patiently listening, Catherine's warm smile faded, her expression turning serious.

"So, you believe the headmistress's punishment was unjust?" she asked.

Jocelyn, caught off guard by Catherine's lack of support, blurted, "Lady Catherine, even the headmistress shouldn't have humiliated us like that."

Catherine's face hardened slightly. "Humiliated you? I perceive it as punishment. As students, you are expected to obey your teachers. Lady Carissa is the headmistress of Gracewood Women's Academy, and even we must obey her. What were you laughing at? You disrespected her. Do you know the penalty for such disrespect? Go ask your grandfather, Lord Gerald, if today's punishment was too lenient or too severe. The headmistress gave you a chance. In my hands, you would be leaving the academy immediately."

Catherine's words were firm, offering no leeway. Family lineageโ€”Quinton or Xavierโ€”held no sway.

Jocelyn and the others, clearly intimidated, stood frozen, unable to argue.

They had never seen Catherine so strict. She exuded an unchallengeable air of authority.

She continued her sharp reprimand: "Furthermore, I've heard you've spoken ill of Miss Young. Lacking firsthand evidence, I'll overlook it for now. But one more word, and you'll be leaving Gracewood. Whether Miss Young holds it against you is not my concern. However, do not mistake her youth for weakness. She is your teacher and primary instructor; she has every right to punish you, and can even involve your families. This is the natural order. If you've sworn to honor your teachers, then leave your pride at the door. Even the king respects the royal chancellor. If you lack the most basic manners, you might as well go home. Don't embarrass yourselves and forfeit your places to those who know how to behave."

Cassidy, clearly displeased, started to speak, but Jocelyn silenced her.

With a visible effort, Jocelyn swallowed her frustration. "Yes, Lady Catherine, we understand. We were wrong. It won't happen again."

"It's best you recognize your mistake, or you'll bring such shame that even the Quinton family name won't be able to shield you," Catherine replied, raising a hand. "Now, go. Don't be late for class tomorrow."

The group bowed and left.

Outside, Cassidy scoffed. "We came here to be students, not servants. What's the big deal? If they want to expel us, let them. I don't even like studying. I'd rather be practicing martial arts."

"Shut up," Jocelyn snapped. "The Queen Dowager played a key role in founding Gracewood Women's Academy. Expulsion would severely damage our marriage prospects."

Hailey remained silent, understanding the impact on her marriage prospects. Following Jocelyn's lead, she chose not to protest.
