Chapter 1117
Rafael returned to Hell Monarch Estate with Thomas. Seeing Violet as cheerful as ever, Thomas felt a small measure of relief. The previous night, Travis's visit to the garrison outpost had genuinely frightened him; he'd immediately rallied his men and ridden out. He'd planned to scold Violet, but seeing her smiling, albeit with red-rimmed eyes, he realized she'd been just as terrified. He couldn't bring himself to reprimand her.
Instead, he simply told her about Yuvan's condition. Besides his injuries, Kevin's brutal beating had left him unable to live a normal life. Violet knew about the previous night's chaosโher apprentices rushing to her rescue, especially Kevin, who'd resorted to violence. A bittersweet mix of sorrow and gratitude filled her heart. Of all her apprentices, Kevin, always the most focused and rational, had thrown caution to the wind, venting his frustration on her behalf.
Though Thomas didn't want to upset her further, he offered some advice: "No matter who you encounter or what happens, remain calm and composed, especially with those you know to be deceitful. Don't trust them easily. If unsure, consult me, Prince Rafael, Lady Carissa, or Mr. York."
"I understand," Violet replied, her expression serious.
Thomas watched her, his admiration growing. "You almost ran into a real problem this time, but luckily, it was just a scare. You've worked so hard for the workshop; its success is thanks to your efforts. I'm proud of you, Violet." He knew her heart was loyal and righteous. He'd met many with grand ambitions to change the world, but they were often blind to the struggles of those close to them. Violet and Carissa, however, were practical, focusing on immediate people and events, taking action where possibleโfar better than chasing lofty goals without addressing present needs.
Before, Violet might have basked in the praise. But after everything, she realized how foolish she'd been to think her skills and wisdom could protect her from anything. She'd even considered going to Edgeview Estate to confront Yuvan herselfโa terrifying thought that made her shiver. Only Carissa's insistence had stopped her.
In Orchid Hall, Carissa offered Rafael chilled fruit punch, observing him carefully. "It's such a hot day. You must be exhausted. You didn't sleep at all last night, did you? Drink this, and then rest."
Rafael drank it quickly, then sat silently. Carissa picked up the empty cup, considering asking Lulu to leave, but hesitated, unsure what they would talk about afterward. "Was that enough? Should I ask Lulu to bring you another?"
"No need, I'll bathe first," Rafael replied.
"Oh, thenโฆ Let me tell Sydney to prepare it for you," Carissa said quickly, hurrying out to find Sydney, leaving Lulu confused. Why hadn't Carissa asked her to leave?
Rafael's shoulders slumped. He wanted to ask Carissa why she hadn't told him what happened, whether she'd even thought of him. Yet, she'd brought him the punch, and she was still smiling. How could he ask now? It would spoil the mood. Still, frustration tightened in his chest. He couldn't pretend nothing had happened.
"Raf," Carissa called, returning. She approached him nervously, twisting her hands. "Should we bathe together? I didn't get a chance last night either."
Rafael looked up, meeting her gaze. A subtle mix of charm and guilt lingered on her face, her cheeks flushed with shyness that tugged at his heart. For a moment, he felt his heart flutter.
He sighed inwardly. What a mess! She hadn't come to him when things went wrongโhow could he claim no blame? She'd gone off to find Violet, disregarding the danger. But wasn't that because he hadn't arranged for anyone to protectโฆ
