Chapter 1214
On New Year's Eve, Ryan wore a bright red woolen cloak, lined with soft white fur, a thick hood pulled over his head. His cheerful demeanor mirrored his festive attire as he eagerly awaited the Klein family's carriage. Jacob had already prepared numerous gifts, many personally selected by Ryan.
The previous night, Frederick had arrived from Northwatch Estate with the account books. Ryan had spent the entire night reviewing them, despite Jacob's assurance that there was no rush. Jacob then sought Carissa's indulgence. Carissa countered that it was beneficial for Ryan to learn account management sooner rather than later, as he would eventually assume full responsibility at Northwatch Estate. Evan, Ryan's study partner, remained at his side during this endeavor, but he was returning home to celebrate the New Year and would not be accompanying Ryan to Highcrest Estate.
Carissa cherished Ryan's childlike innocence, a quality that contrasted with his meticulous nature and maturity beyond his years. She mused that some of it might be a facade, given his past hardships, but ultimately, it didn't matter. Sometimes, she reflected, playing the fool was a necessary strategy.
Though excited to visit the Kleins, Ryan noted Rafael's absence and Carissa's solitary New Year's Eve. Taking her hand, he promised, "I'll be back by the second day of the New Year. I won't stay long. I'll return to keep you company, Aunt Carissa."
Carissa playfully tapped his nose. "Stay a little longer. I'll be busy, and I'll manage without you."
"I'll be here too, Ryan. Don't worry. Enjoy your time with your uncle and his family," Violet added with a smile, her arm resting on Carissa's shoulder.
"Yes, Aunt Violet, Mr. Isaac, and many others will be here," Ryan reassured her, glancing at Violet, Isaac, Jacob, Lulu, and the others. "Now I can relax." He stood with his hands clasped behind his back, a smile transforming him into a miniature grown-up.
This sight stirred bittersweet longing in Carissa; it reminded her of her second brother. A pang of sadness tugged at her heart. If only Nathan and Yvette could see how clever and well-behaved Ryan was, she thought; they would be so proud.
Soon, the Klein family arrived, their carriages laden with gifts. For the past few years, it had been a reciprocal exchange—cartload after cartload, each return gift mirroring the value of the previous one. This prompted Carissa to select simple, practical gifts, except for Helen's, where she felt free to choose anything she desired. Helen, in turn, requested only pastries and dishes in return, subtly supporting the Klein family.
Helen explained her intentions openly to Carissa and Violet: "I'm rewarding them to show that Ryan has powerful backing. Not everyone in that household is kind to him. With me watching over him, even those who dislike him will think twice."
Carissa wholeheartedly agreed, expressing profound gratitude. Helen waved her hand dismissively. "My favor to Ryan has nothing to do with you. No need to thank me."
Gillian privately lauded Helen's kindness, deeming her extremely benevolent. However, Helen sharply countered, "What do you know? I do love Ryan, but I'm doing this for Carissa, too. Despite my position in the palace, how often was I subtly undermined? How much did I endure in silence?
"But now, with Carissa as my daughter-in-law, Josephine and Dakota treat me with complete respect. They know the rules. My sister wouldn't normally intervene in minor matters, but Carissa is different. If anyone dares to wrong me, Carissa will ensure retribution."
Gillian smiled and agreed.
Once the Kleins departed with Ryan, Carissa prepared to bathe and change for her trip to the palace. The annual formalities loomed, endless and tedious. In the past, these rituals had been bearable with Rafael, but the prospect of attending alone filled her with a profound sense of loss, another day spent missing him.
