Chapter 1217

Gerald's expression showed slight displeasure as he turned to Carissa. "Do you think I'm wrong, Your Grace? Or do you believe yourself capable of teaching and disseminating knowledge?"

Helen gently tugged Carissa's sleeve, silently urging her to avoid further conflict. Helen deeply respected Gerald, Sigmund's former tutor, and had even considered a marriage alliance between Rafael and a Quinton daughter. Ultimately, Kiera's marriage to Logan fulfilled that wish. While acknowledging Gerald's reprimanding tone, Helen felt Carissa should accept his advice humbly. Still, she found his somewhat mocking tone uncomfortable, sensing an implication of Carissa's lack of education; yet, she chose to overlook it, deferring to his age and status as a royal tutor.

Carissa met his gaze directly. "Lord Quinton, you're mistaken. While I lack your teaching skills, I intend to protect Gracewood Women's Academy. My failing was not anticipating the depth of malice driving those who would ruin the reputation of so many students to destroy the academy. Your condemnation should be directed at them, not me. As for teaching, we have specialists. Are you suggesting every academy teacher is a fraud? What of my senior guild member Kyle, or the respected Mrs. Ashford and Mrs. Wright?"

Gerald's expression darkened. "I offered advice, yet you respond with sharp words and excuses. A women's academy differs from a regular academy. Even with the title, it should prioritize proper conduct and virtue. Mr. Spencer's painting talent doesn't qualify him to teach such matters. If you persist, this academy shouldn't exist."

"Lord Quinton, take that up with the Queen Dowager. You'll see her tonight. Why not raise it with her?" Carissa retorted. Her respect vanished after witnessing him at the gentlemen's retreat.

Gerald's lips curled into a mocking smile. His voice dripped with sarcasm. "Ah, your boldness stems from the Queen Dowager's support. I apologize for offending you, Your Grace. Please forgive me."

He then affected an air of disinterest, turning to signal his servant to assist him into his carriage.

Carissa, initially furious, almost laughed. Some people considered their ideas so superior that others' opinions were mere nonsense. Arguing was pointless.

Once in the carriage, Helen reproached her gently. "Why argue? Even if he's wrong, simply listen. His words aren't as important as he thinks. Why waste your time?"

Carissa chuckled and nodded. "You're right, Mother. I won't engage him again like that."

Helen sighed. "That man is so high-handed and harsh. His status as King Sigmund's teacher doesn't justify such treatment. You're a princess consort! Does he consider ordinary people mere ants?"

"He's accustomed to reverence," Carissa replied. "He believes his words are law; no one dares contradict him."

Carissa knew Gerald opposed Skye Embroidery, viewing it as contrary to tradition; a refuge for discarded wives undermined the intended punishment of divorce.

Helen felt frustrated. Her admiration for the Quinton family diminished, except for Kiera's husband, Logan.
