Chapter 1220
โBut how long can they afford the tuition? Daughters from ordinary families must help support their households; studying doesn't generate income,โ Violet questioned.
Carissa pondered. โThat endowment isn't insignificant. It should cover a year or two. We can't eliminate fees entirely, but we could reduce them. Perhaps offer half-day classes, allowing the girls to assist their families in the afternoons.โ
She paused, considering. โAnd don't forget the merchants. They won't be tight-fisted. They're less bound by strict social conventions.โ
Violet nodded. โTrue. Unless they're from noble or royal merchant families, ordinary merchants often entrust their women with business affairs.โ
โEven ordinary families might send their daughters. Partly due to Mr. Spencer's reputation, but also because many can't afford to educate their sons. If their daughters can attend an academy with reduced tuition, it's worthwhile, even if only to tutor their brothers in reading and writing upon their return,โ Catherine added.
Carissa agreed, but inwardly admired Victoria's shrewdness in turning the situation to her advantage. Did Kylie truly believe Victoria hadn't foreseen her machinations?
Kylie didn't want Carissa associating with noble families. After her house arrest ended, she summoned the noblewomen for a meeting, proposing the academy withdrawal. To avoid Salvador's criticism, she feigned opposition after some had already withdrawn, subtly encouraging others to follow suit. Kylie believed she'd triumphed, but this was precisely Victoria and Carissa's intent.
Ultimately, everyone achieved their objectives. Yet, Salvador would likely be displeased; it was a significant opportunity lost.
News of Gracewood Women's Academy accepting students from ordinary families eventually reached Kylie. She laughed uncontrollably.
Composing herself, she addressed Lydia, โOnly Carissa would dare do something so audacious. If the Queen Dowager learns of this, she'll be disappointed!โ
Her thoughts shifted. โWhy wait for others to report it? I'll go directly to the Queen Dowager before Carissa reaches the palace and charms Her Majesty into agreement. That would ruin everything.โ
Lydia considered this. โYour Majesty, I advise against intervention. You've done what was necessary. Further action would seem presumptuous and might arouse His Majesty's suspicions.โ
Kylie shook her head. โI can't remain silent. If His Majesty suspects me, it's merely house arrest. That acknowledges my actions' validity, but he must maintain appearances for Her Majesty's sake.โ
โThe house arrest was due to lack of evidence,โ Lydia insisted. โWith proof, who knows what might have happened? Discretion is wise, Your Majesty.โ
Kylie refused to yield, ordering her maids to prepare her. โExcessive discretion encourages boldness in even the most cunning women.โ
โLady Jeanette poses no real threat. She lacks powerful support and isn't well-liked in the palace,โ Lydia stated.
โBut she has His Majesty's favor, and that suffices,โ Kylie retorted, frustration evident. While few new concubines had entered the palace recently, Salvador's attention to Jeanette was unprecedented. โAnd haven't you heard? On New Year's Eve, Jeanette and Carissa conversed for an hour. I suspect Carissa sent Jeanette to the palace.โ
โYour Majesty, your position is secure with the Quinton family and the eldest prince,โ Lydia continued, attempting to dissuade her. โRegarding His Majesty's affection, it's best not to expect too much and avoid heartache.โ
Kylieโs smile turned bitter. โNot expect? Lydia, the heart doesn't always obey. The King is my husband. How can I not desire his love?โ
She sighed. โEnough! Help me with my hair. I must see Her Majesty.โ
