Barrett cut in hurriedly. โMom, please listen! I canโt keep her dowry.โ
โYouโre foolish, my son! Sheโs bullied us to this extent! Youโre being soft, but she wants my life!โ Rebecca yelled.
Barrett remained resolute. โKeeping her dowry wouldnโt be the act of a true man. I absolutely refuse. Dad, Benjamin, Iโll need you to invite the family heads from both sides tomorrow.โ
โI also need the matchmaker who arranged our marriage. As for neighbors, letโs just invite a few families to make it official.โ
Jonathan furrowed his brow. โThe matchmaker who arranged your marriage was Lady Avis. Sheโs Madam Sinclairโs cousin and Carissaโs maternal aunt.โ
โThen donโt invite her. Invite the matchmaker who originally delivered the proposal to the Sinclair familyโthe one from the western district,โ Rebecca said.
Avis, in poor health, was a consort to Prince Yuvan. Even the management of Yuvanโs estate, her responsibility, had been handed to a secondary concubine. Though the Warren family didnโt fear an unfavored, childless consort, they still avoided conflict with the royal family.
โIโll leave the details to you, Mom. Iโm going out for a bit,โ Barrett declared.
โItโs late. Where are you going?โ Benjamin asked.
โJust for a walk,โ Barrett replied, striding out.
In actuality, he was going to see Aurora to explain the situation. He knew she despised men who mistreated women, so he wanted to tell her he wasnโt deliberately making life difficult for Carissa; he was simply frustrated by her ruthlessness. This wasnโt the first time Barrett had visited the Yates family residence in the middle of the night.
Auroraโs father, Tristan Yates, had been Hectorโs comrade-in-arms. However, a battle injuryโthe loss of a legโprevented his return to the battlefield. When Aurora returned with her military achievements, Tristan was overjoyed, proud that his family still served the country as capable warriors. He wasnโt entirely pleased about the marriage, but Aurora convinced him Carissa understood and agreed to the match, so he didnโt object further.
Auroraโs mother, on the other hand, was delighted her daughter was marrying into the Warren family. She made a great fuss and demanded a hefty sum in betrothal gifts.

A small pebble hit Auroraโs window. Shortly after, she quietly opened the door, allowing Barrett to slip inside.
Auroraโs chamber was filled with weapons, though none were particularly valuable. She simply liked the atmosphereโlit lamps casting shadows of blades and swords.
The couple embraced in the dim lamplight.
โWhy are you here so late?โ Aurora asked softly.
The Yates residence wasnโt largeโa small hall flanked by two rooms and a small courtyard in the back where Auroraโs elder brother and his wife lived. Therefore, Aurora didnโt dare speak loudly, fearing they might overhear.
โAurora,โ Barrett said, holding her shoulders, his expression serious. โI intend to divorce Carissa. I hope you understand.โ
โDivorce?โ Aurora was taken aback. โWhy?โ
โTonight, Mom fell ill. I tried to summon Sebastian, but he refused to come.โ
โIs your mother alright now?โ Aurora asked anxiously.
โSheโs fine. We got a royal physician. But the physician said Momโs heart condition can only be treated with Sebastianโs Snowdrop Pills. Sebastian is a close friend of the Marquis of Northwatch, so he listens to Carissa. If she tells him not to come, he wonโt.โ
Aurora understood immediately. โSo, sheโs using your motherโs illness to prevent you from marrying me?โ
โExactly. Tonight, I made it clear I intend to divorce her. But rest assured, I wonโt take her dowry. Iโm not mistreating her; her actions have been too ruthless to overlook.โ
Barrett explained his reasons, concerned that Aurora might misunderstand and think him heartless or someone who mistreated women.
Angry, Aurora exclaimed, โHer behavior is unacceptable! This isnโt just about respect anymore. Sheโs wicked! Sheโs clearly plotting against your mother.โ
โSo, you agree with my divorcing her?โ Barrett asked.
