Barrett cut in hurriedly. โ€œMom, please listen! I canโ€™t keep her dowry.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re foolish, my son! Sheโ€™s bullied us to this extent! Youโ€™re being soft, but she wants my life!โ€ Rebecca yelled.

Barrett remained resolute. โ€œKeeping her dowry wouldnโ€™t be the act of a true man. I absolutely refuse. Dad, Benjamin, Iโ€™ll need you to invite the family heads from both sides tomorrow.โ€

โ€œI also need the matchmaker who arranged our marriage. As for neighbors, letโ€™s just invite a few families to make it official.โ€

Jonathan furrowed his brow. โ€œThe matchmaker who arranged your marriage was Lady Avis. Sheโ€™s Madam Sinclairโ€™s cousin and Carissaโ€™s maternal aunt.โ€

โ€œThen donโ€™t invite her. Invite the matchmaker who originally delivered the proposal to the Sinclair familyโ€”the one from the western district,โ€ Rebecca said.

Avis, in poor health, was a consort to Prince Yuvan. Even the management of Yuvanโ€™s estate, her responsibility, had been handed to a secondary concubine. Though the Warren family didnโ€™t fear an unfavored, childless consort, they still avoided conflict with the royal family.

โ€œIโ€™ll leave the details to you, Mom. Iโ€™m going out for a bit,โ€ Barrett declared.

โ€œItโ€™s late. Where are you going?โ€ Benjamin asked.

โ€œJust for a walk,โ€ Barrett replied, striding out.

In actuality, he was going to see Aurora to explain the situation. He knew she despised men who mistreated women, so he wanted to tell her he wasnโ€™t deliberately making life difficult for Carissa; he was simply frustrated by her ruthlessness. This wasnโ€™t the first time Barrett had visited the Yates family residence in the middle of the night.

Auroraโ€™s father, Tristan Yates, had been Hectorโ€™s comrade-in-arms. However, a battle injuryโ€”the loss of a legโ€”prevented his return to the battlefield. When Aurora returned with her military achievements, Tristan was overjoyed, proud that his family still served the country as capable warriors. He wasnโ€™t entirely pleased about the marriage, but Aurora convinced him Carissa understood and agreed to the match, so he didnโ€™t object further.

Auroraโ€™s mother, on the other hand, was delighted her daughter was marrying into the Warren family. She made a great fuss and demanded a hefty sum in betrothal gifts.

A small pebble hit Auroraโ€™s window. Shortly after, she quietly opened the door, allowing Barrett to slip inside.

Auroraโ€™s chamber was filled with weapons, though none were particularly valuable. She simply liked the atmosphereโ€”lit lamps casting shadows of blades and swords.

The couple embraced in the dim lamplight.

โ€œWhy are you here so late?โ€ Aurora asked softly.

The Yates residence wasnโ€™t largeโ€”a small hall flanked by two rooms and a small courtyard in the back where Auroraโ€™s elder brother and his wife lived. Therefore, Aurora didnโ€™t dare speak loudly, fearing they might overhear.

โ€œAurora,โ€ Barrett said, holding her shoulders, his expression serious. โ€œI intend to divorce Carissa. I hope you understand.โ€

โ€œDivorce?โ€ Aurora was taken aback. โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œTonight, Mom fell ill. I tried to summon Sebastian, but he refused to come.โ€

โ€œIs your mother alright now?โ€ Aurora asked anxiously.

โ€œSheโ€™s fine. We got a royal physician. But the physician said Momโ€™s heart condition can only be treated with Sebastianโ€™s Snowdrop Pills. Sebastian is a close friend of the Marquis of Northwatch, so he listens to Carissa. If she tells him not to come, he wonโ€™t.โ€

Aurora understood immediately. โ€œSo, sheโ€™s using your motherโ€™s illness to prevent you from marrying me?โ€

โ€œExactly. Tonight, I made it clear I intend to divorce her. But rest assured, I wonโ€™t take her dowry. Iโ€™m not mistreating her; her actions have been too ruthless to overlook.โ€

Barrett explained his reasons, concerned that Aurora might misunderstand and think him heartless or someone who mistreated women.

Angry, Aurora exclaimed, โ€œHer behavior is unacceptable! This isnโ€™t just about respect anymore. Sheโ€™s wicked! Sheโ€™s clearly plotting against your mother.โ€

โ€œSo, you agree with my divorcing her?โ€ Barrett asked.
