Chapter 1: Awe
Five carriages arrived in Eka just past noon. Ako, who had shared a meager portion of akong with Carissa (Carissa had barely eaten and limited her intake, fearing frequent stops would waste precious time), carried a considerable weight of worry. Following Me addedenโs instructions, she led her horse and asked for directions on Veydayf Lane. MWA W opet, owned by the Florian governor Dylan had mentioned, was where Rafael and the child were.
Carissa, tired and exhausted, stood outside the gate. The residence was impressive; a spacious carriage was stationed at the gate, and a guard in official attire stood watch. He must be a guard Rafael had borrowed from the government. Noticing the woman with a horse who hesitated to knock, the guard cautiously asked, "Lady Sinclair?"
Carissa nodded, unable to speak; something felt like it was clogging her throat. Seeing her nod, the guard knocked on the door. โYour Highness, Lady Sinclair has arrived.โ
Moments later, the door opened to reveal Rafael, who wore a green outfit but looked haggard. He had clearly lost weight; his eyes were shadowed, and he appeared sleep-deprived. Seeing Carissa, Rafael sighed with relief, then frowned. โHow have you lost so much weight?โ
Carissa managed a soft sound, her throat choked with emotion, but her eyes were fixed on the interior of the house.
โTake the horse and feed it,โ Rafael instructed the guard.
The guard reached for the reins, but Carissa gripped them tightly, her anxiety palpable.

Noticing her distress, Rafael reached out and took her cold hand. โCome inside. Whether or not itโs him, you need to see for yourself.โ
Carissa released the reins but retrieved her bag, taking out the slingshot she had brought. Taking a deep breath, she asked, โWhere is he?โ
โHeโs locked in a room,โ Rafael sighed. โThe childโฆ heโs quite strong and somewhat wild.โ
He led her inside, closed the door behind them, and locked it. Seeing Carissaโs puzzled expression, he smiled ruefully.
โHeโs escaped several times. Though he has a limp, heโs surprisingly agile and stubborn. I feared injuring him, so I had to confine him for now.โ
โDoes he look very similar?โ Carissa asked, her voice trembling.
As she followed Rafael, her feet felt as though they were sinking into cotton. She didnโt even notice that he was holding her hand.
โHe does resemble him, but I canโt be certain, since I hadnโt seen the child for several months before I went to the Southern Frontier. He also looks like your second brother,โ Rafael said.
Like a marionette, Carissa allowed Rafael to lead her to the door of a small room. From within came a series of loud banging noises, as if things were being smashed.
โHeโs been this way since he came hereโvery agitated. He bangs things whether itโs day or night. Sometimes, he even hits his own head. Iโve had a physician examine him, and it seems that heโs been given medication that can be addictive. If he goes without it, it can lead to violent outbursts,โ Rafael explained. Thus, Rafaelโs exhaustion was understandable.
The door was locked from the outside with a chain, and the window was boarded up. Rafael took out a key and unlocked the door. As soon as it creaked open, a small figure rushed forward, trying to escape. Rafael quickly grabbed the child, who struggled violently despite being held securely. The child flailed, biting and making muffled noises of distress. Carissa couldnโt see his face clearly; he was thrashing and biting Rafael.

In a detached manner, she lifted the slingshot and numbly called out, โRyan!โ She had come here to confirm whether this was indeed a false hope, so her call of โRyanโ was more of a test, lacking emotional depth. She just needed to see this possible โRyanโ for herself.
The struggling child in Rafaelโs arms gradually quieted. He slowly turned his head, his eyes still wild and red. His face was covered in small injuries, and he looked dirty and emaciated. His mouth hung slightly open as he stared at Carissa.
Carissa gasped, covering her mouth as tears streamed uncontrollably down her face.

Many unclear or nonsensical words/phrases remain uncorrected as it's impossible to know the intended meaning without more context. For example, "akong," "Me addeden," and "MWA W opet" likely require authorial clarification.
