Chapter 28

Rebecca's words silenced Theodore and Solomon, leaving them speechless. She was rightโ€”the Sinclair family lacked capable individuals. In contrast, Barrett was currently in the limelight. Especially with Aurora by his side, their future prospects seemed promising.

โ€œMom, thatโ€™s enough. Letโ€™s drop this topic,โ€ Barrett said. He didnโ€™t want things to escalate. He wanted to settle the matter quickly and focus on preparing for his wedding to Aurora. He never intended to take half of Carissaโ€™s dowry, so he felt guilty toward the Sinclair family.

The others remained mostly silent. The Warren family members felt equally guilty but lacked Rebeccaโ€™s outspokenness. This was especially true for Beatriceโ€™s family, who found Rebeccaโ€™s words particularly grating. She sounded like a victorious villainess. Beatrice now regretted coming, feeling utterly humiliated by the situation.

โ€œCarissa, bring out the dowry list! I know youโ€™ve hidden it. Since Barrett has agreed to leave you half, letโ€™s split it according to the list!โ€ Rebecca ordered coldly.

To prevent Carissa from secretly tampering with it, she added, โ€œDonโ€™t think about using a fake dowry list to fool me. A copy of the original list was made, and itโ€™s here in the estate.โ€

Carissa smiled. โ€œIf thatโ€™s the case, why not just bring out your copy? Why ask me to do it?โ€ Since entering the household, Carissa had possessed the dowry list and the keys to the private cabinet in the account room. Making a copy was impossible. Over the past year, she had used her dowry money for household expenses and medical bills. How could they have made a copy in preparation for today?

Rebecca snorted. โ€œI told you to bring it, so do it. If you donโ€™t, you can leave with nothing.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re too much!โ€ Theodore exclaimed furiously.

Looking at the woman who had been her mother-in-law for a year, Carissa wished she could slap herself for her foolishness. Her obedience and respect had gone unrecognized and unappreciated.

Carissa brought out the list and looked at Barrett with an icy gaze. โ€œHere, come and take it.โ€

The list was practically before him. He could easily reach out and take it.

Seeing her son hesitate, Rebecca urged, โ€œWhat are you doing? Stop dawdling! Divide what needs to be divided. Get everything sorted today.โ€

With a heavy sigh, Barrett reached for the list. But as his hand extended, Carissa swiftly pulled her hand back.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ Barrett exclaimed in surprise.

โ€œWell, can you grab this list from my hand with your skills?โ€ Carissa replied coldly.

Barrett sneered. โ€œAre you trying to force me to snatch it from you?โ€

โ€œI just want to see how good a general of our kingdom really is in combat!โ€

With that, Carissa tossed the dowry list into the air.

Barrett smirked contemptuously and leaped to grab it. But before he could, a gust of wind lifted it higher. Then, a red whip swiftly snaked around his wrist, pulling him down. He crashed to the ground.

At that moment, Carissa effortlessly leaped into the air. Her shoe tapped lightly on her husbandโ€™s head as she soared, delicately grabbing the list near the rafters before landing silently.

Her display stunned everyoneโ€”even Theodore and Solomon were unaware of her combat skills. Barrettโ€™s eyes widened in disbelief.

โ€œYouโ€ฆ you know how to fight?โ€

Carissa smiled lightly. โ€œNot very well, but better than you.โ€

Barrett grew furious. โ€œYouโ€™re just talking nonsense!โ€

He swung a fist at her, but Carissa swiftly dodged it and darted past him, moving too fast for Barrett to track. In an instant, she was in the courtyard.

Barrett gritted his teeth and pursued her, launching a rapid series of kicks mid-air. Despite his speed, he couldnโ€™t even graze Carissaโ€™s dress.

Carissa coiled the whip around her waist. Then, she manipulated the leaves with the wind, sending them flying like blades toward Barrett.

How lethal could some mere leaves be? Barrett thought. He attempted to redirect them with his own wind technique, unaware that they sliced across his hands, face, hair, and clothes, leaving tiny cuts and droplets of blood.

Three scratches marred each side of his faceโ€”superficial, resembling cat scratches, but making him look both pitiful and comical.

โ€œExcellent! Well done!โ€ Theodore shouted excitedly. โ€œThere are no weak women in the Marquis of Northwatchโ€™s family!โ€
