Chapter 414

Helen remarked, โ€œThat young lady from the Prince family is rather pitiable, though.โ€

Violet scoffed. โ€œPitiable? Hardly! Theyโ€™re all cut from the same cloth. You might not know this, but when Cari married the marshal, Violaโ€™s marriage was also on the same day. She tried to overshadow Cari at every turn, and even told her maids that Cariโ€™s dowry was so little. The look on her face when others came to add to Cariโ€™s trousseau was quite something.โ€

โ€œIs that true? How do you know?โ€ Helen asked.

โ€œOf course, itโ€™s from my sources. The Prince familyโ€™s management isnโ€™t great. They canโ€™t control their servantsโ€™ mouths. Violaโ€™s bitterness towards Cari is quite evident,โ€ Violet said with a touch of pride.

It turned out that Winonaโ€™s people were indeed very useful.

Carissa recalled her two meetings with Viola. The first time was uneventful, but by the second meeting, she had sensed hostility.

โ€œWe donโ€™t have to deal with her anyway. Let her be angry,โ€ she said. โ€œSheโ€™s ungrateful,โ€ Helen spat in disdain.

She thought of how her sonโ€™s military power had been taken by the Prince family and added, โ€œTo say sheโ€™s pitiable is to overlook that every pitiable person has their own faults. Her entire family isnโ€™t worth much, and they even took my sonโ€™s military authority.โ€

โ€œMom!โ€ Rafaelโ€™s expression darkened immediately. โ€œWhat are you saying?โ€

Helen started and quickly grasped Carissaโ€™s arm, looking anxious. She didnโ€™t understand why Rafael was being so harsh.

Carissa said, โ€œWhere such talk is inappropriate, even within the estate. It was a bad decision.โ€

Helen nodded in understanding.

Carissa then lightly tapped Rafaelโ€™s arm. โ€œDonโ€™t speak so loudly.โ€

Seeing his motherโ€™s concern, Rafael said, โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Mom. I was wrong. A bitโ€ฆ much?โ€

Looking chagrined, Helen said, โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t speak loudly to your mother. If others hear it, they might say youโ€™re disrespectful.โ€

Rafael glanced at Carissa, paused, then said, โ€œIโ€™ll be more mindful.โ€

With that, Helen decided to skip finishing her coffee and retreated to her room.

Though the sky had darkened, the weather wasnโ€™t too cold, and the breeze carried a hint of warmth. The couple walked hand in hand through the courtyard.

Rafael informed his wife, โ€œAunt Avis was buried at Ethereal Peak. The funeral followed a princess consortโ€™s rites. In death, she was granted the honor she deserved as a princess consort.โ€

Due to the freezing rain, the funeral had taken place a long time ago. Neither Carissa nor Rafael had attended. They had sent Jacob in their stead.

Carissa felt a pang of sadness. โ€œIt was just for show.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be disheartened,โ€ Rafael said softly, squeezing her hand. โ€œAt least you were there to keep her company before she left.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Carissa lowered her head, not saying much.

โ€œJacob said that Randall truly mourned Aunt Avis. He was the sincerest in his grief at the funeral, while Sabrina and Stephanie only managed to squeeze out a few tears to put on a show of sadness.โ€

Carissa recalled the faces of the two sisters. When they heard of their motherโ€™s death at Hell Monarch Estate, they seemed indifferent, as if their mother had already been dead in their hearts long ago.

Changing the topic, she said, โ€œIโ€™ve sent a notice to Gracehold Estate. Iโ€™ll be visiting Leona tomorrow.โ€

โ€œDo you want me to go with you?โ€ Rafael asked.

Carissa smiled. โ€œWeโ€™re just having a chat between cousins. What would you do there? Besides, you donโ€™t have a day off tomorrow.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll act like an incompetent official and stay away from the Supreme Court to go with you.โ€

Carissa replied, โ€œThereโ€™s no need. Iโ€™ve asked Vivi to come with me, and Iโ€™ve also invited Rowan to join us. Heโ€™ll check Leonaโ€™s health. Samuel taking a concubine must have been a severe blow to her.โ€

โ€œAlright.โ€ Rafael frowned, clearly having little regard for Samuel.

Carissa suddenly said softly, โ€œLeona loved Samuel deeply, but itโ€™s a pity her affection was misplaced.โ€

Rafael pulled her into an embrace, his voice filled with determination as he said, โ€œI love you very much too, and I know my love isnโ€™t misplaced.โ€

Carissa rested her head against his chest. For a moment, her body felt warm against his.
