Shopkeeper William smiled at Serena. "Miss, that's certainly possible. However, we have many more ruby tiaras. You've only seen this one. Would you like to see some others?"
Serena glanced up as a shop assistant entered carrying a zebrawood tray. The tray held noticeably less valuable pieces, clearly from a lower floor. She clutched her jewelry box tighter. "No, I only want this one."
Rebecca's frustration was evident. "What nonsense? We've chosen it. What's wrong with your shop? Just send someone to our residence for payment. Stop wasting time."
William, experienced with such situations (though rare on the third floor), recognized the attempt to pressure the daughter-in-law into paying for the dowry. The matriarch usually handled finances, yet this younger woman, close to tears, was paying with her own funds. The two older women were clearly pressuring her, and her humiliation and distress were palpable.
As the situation stalled, a simply dressed woman emerged from a private room. Calmly and gently, she addressed William. "Wasn't this ruby tiara reserved for me? Why is it being sold?"
All eyes turned to Viola, whose face paled. The woman was Kayla Lloyd, niece of Justice Minister Patrick Lloyd and widow of Lawrence Ziegler, the Marquis of Elderglen's second son (who died in the same battle as Thomas). Instead of returning to her family, Kayla remained with the Marquis's family, raising their adopted son to continue Lawrence's legacy.
Kayla genuinely wanted to help Viola. However, following Viola's divorce, comparisons had been drawn between them. Preoccupied with grief, Kayla hadn't noticed the public reaction. Now, she intended a kind gesture, believing they shared similar hardships. But it backfired.
Viola looked up sharply. "Since the assistant didn't mention it was reserved, my sister-in-law will take it. Sir, please send someone with me to collect the payment at my home."

Kayla and William were stunned. Kayla met Viola's cold, venomous gaze, hesitated, then said softly, "Alright. If you like it, I'll find something else." She quickly returned to her private room, the curtain falling behind her.
Violet was shocked. Was Viola insane? Kayla had clearly offered help, yet Viola seemed offended. Did she harbor a grudge? Kayla had been genuinely kind, her gaze even expressing pity.
Watching Viola lead Rebecca and Serena downstairs, Violet went to the private room. Leaning over a display case, she asked Nathaniel, "Do you know who that lady was?"
Nathaniel, while not having seen her, likely recognized her voice; most third-floor guests were familiar. He smiled. "Lady Kayla of the Marquis of Elderglen's family. A kind and gentle person. Her husband, General Ziegler, was also highly respected and remembered."
