In Valor Estate, only one lamp lit the corridor tonight; two glass-covered lamps illuminated the main courtyard. These were the lamps Carissa had left behind when she moved away.
The side hall was shrouded in darkness, the silence broken only by buzzing mosquitoes. The Golden Tower's shop assistant remained there, anxiously seated in the side hall of the main courtyard. He had received no coffee, and no lamps had been lit. He had waited from dawn until nightfall.
He was there to collect payment, but after entering Valor Estate, he was left waiting. From the main hall, he heard shouting and heart-wrenching crying. The commotion lasted at least an hour before subsiding. Someone then told him to wait, but no one returned.
He was accustomed to accompanying guests to collect payments when funds were insufficient. He sometimes waited, but never longer than fifteen to thirty minutes. This was usually due to the estate's size and the host's hospitality; refreshments were provided, and he was served before receiving payment.
More often than not, he waited only briefly. But here, it was differentโhe had waited until dark without coffee or light. He felt as if he had stumbled into a thieves' den.
He had asked the servants, but they only told him to wait. He returned to his spot, especially since the tiara (36,800 silver coins) had already been taken.
After dinner and a fragrant bathโusing lotion gifted by Jessica (ten silver coins per bottle)โSerena visited her mother. The lotion left her skin smooth and translucent.
โIs she still not back?โ Rebecca asked, glancing outside after taking her medicine.
Jade replied, โMadam Viola has not yet returned.โ
Serena pursed her lips. โDidnโt she return to her familyโs home for the banknotes? Does it really take this long? I hope she doesnโt come back empty-handed.โ
โShe said she wanted to buy it,โ Rebecca replied flatly.
Her heart ached. The tiara cost almost 40,000 silver coinsโa considerable sum.
โWell, Barrett hasnโt returned either. Heโs probably on duty tonight,โ Serena said with a sharp, disdainful smile. โWhen he gets back, sheโll probably make a scene, crying and shouting as if we were the ones pressuring her. I was ready to refuse it, but she insisted. Iโm sure sheโll complain to him when he gets back.โ
โLet her complain,โ Rebecca sighed, her gloom unshaken.

Rebecca recalled Carissa's dowry for Kiera today: twenty Mystic Pearls for a tiara. Her heart ached. The Sinclair family was truly excessive.
When Carissa married into the Warren family, she received no such extravagant gifts. Her dowry was substantial, but primarily property and shops. Melanie, shrewdly, converted money into less easily spendable assets, likely fearing Carissa would suffer.
Carissa's dowry was lucrative for the Warrens that year, but nothing compared to her marriage to the Hell Monarch. That was unparalleled wealth. Rebecca's heart ached anew at the thought.
After returning from The Golden Tower, Viola acted like a madwoman, shouting and screamingโrivaling even Aurora. Though she claimed she was getting banknotes, her frenzy was disheartening.
โSheโs only fooling herself and taking her frustration out on others. It was her own fault,โ Rebecca said, irritated. She glanced at Serena. โYou should avoid provoking her. She seems ready to lash out at anyone.โ
