Chapter 583

โ€œIn Harmony Palace, we were confined to our own courtyards,โ€ Carmen explained. โ€œWhether practicing martial arts or receiving instructionโ€”as my sister did from the courtesansโ€”everything happened within our courtyards. Iโ€™ve never been to the western courtyard, but the servants say itโ€™s used for religious worship. Grand Princess Eleanor prays there on the first and fifteenth of each month.โ€

Carissa frowned. โ€œSo, thereโ€™s a templeโ€ฆ?โ€

It couldn't be that simple. If it were just a temple, why would Eleanor be so anxious? Carissa decided she needed to investigate further.

โ€œYou mentioned martial arts skills?โ€ Carissa asked.

โ€œGreta is my teacher,โ€ Carmen replied. โ€œIโ€™ve trained for years. We sisters all have similar skills. The Grand Princess raised us to be useful; she wouldnโ€™t waste her efforts.โ€

Carissa nodded. That was true. Eleanor wasnโ€™t merely cruel; her collusion with Yuvan suggested a significant plot, and she would naturally utilize all her resources.

โ€œHow does your father treat your mother?โ€ Carissa asked.

โ€œMy father favored my mother, which allowed Grand Princess Eleanor to manipulate him,โ€ Carmen said, her voice laced with frustration. โ€œBut my mother always wanted to escape Harmony Palace. My father had opportunities to help her, but he didnโ€™t. He only started to fear for her safety when she was pregnant with my brotherโ€”but by then, she was heavily pregnant and about to give birth. How could she escape?โ€

Her tone revealed resentment toward both Henry and Eleanor. Her voice choked with emotion as she continued, โ€œNow, my mother is imprisoned in the dungeon, to ensure my sister and I obey. Before I left, I saw her. She was so starved, she barely looked human. Iโ€™m terrified she wonโ€™t survive.โ€

Carissa said, โ€œGo back for now. Iโ€™ve sedated all three of them. Weโ€™ll search everyone, including you.โ€ The search was a precaution and would also convince Greta that they had gained some level of trust, even if it was unlikely Carissaโ€™s group would find anything significant.

โ€œThenโ€ฆ?โ€ Carmen prompted.

โ€œLetโ€™s talk more in the capital,โ€ Carissa replied calmly. โ€œI still canโ€™t fully trust you.โ€

Carmen grew anxious. โ€œBut without me, I canโ€™t complete my mission. At the very least, let me follow you to the estate. Only then will the Grand Princess release my mother from the dungeon. She may not treat my mother well afterward, but at least my mother will have enough to eat.โ€

Carissa turned to her husband. โ€œWhat do you think, Your Highness?โ€

Rafael sat up, his expression serious. โ€œI leave the decision to you. Iโ€™m simply here to listen.โ€

Violet stifled a laugh. In Carissaโ€™s presence, Rafaelโ€™s authority seemed nonexistent.

Carissa considered this before saying, โ€œGo back for now. Iโ€™ll see you again. The journey to the capital is long.โ€

Understanding Carissaโ€™s dismissal, Carmen bowed. โ€œUnderstood. Iโ€™ll take my leave.โ€

After Carmen left, Carissa turned to Rafael. โ€œShould we keep her?โ€

He hesitated. โ€œItโ€™s up to you.โ€

Carissa rubbed her temples. โ€œAm I that petty? Iโ€™m discussing this with you, not being jealous.โ€

Rafael chuckled. โ€œThatโ€™s not what I meantโ€ฆ However, rationally, keeping her might be strategic. We can still verify her story.โ€

Violet stood. โ€œIโ€™ll handle the search.โ€

She was best suited for the task. Regardless of the couple's rational or irrational debate, Violet seemed to agree with Rafael: keeping a close watch would prevent trouble. If Carmen was truly betraying Eleanor, her limited usefulness wouldn't matter; thwarting Eleanor's plans would still be a victory.
