Chapter 635

โ€œHow is Leona doing? Is the baby really gone?โ€ Rafael asked.

โ€œYes,โ€ Carissa replied, her voice heavy with sorrow. โ€œShe almost bled out, but luckily, Sebastian was there. She survived, but recovery will take at least a year and a half. Sheโ€™s fast asleep now, but Iโ€™m afraid sheโ€™ll be heartbroken when she wakes up.โ€

Rafael sighed. โ€œShe carried the baby for nine months. Iโ€™m sure she will be.โ€

Carissaโ€™s complexion paled. โ€œShe nearly lost her life, too. Raf, we canโ€™t let Samuel get away with this. He needs at least a few years in prison.โ€

โ€œLeave it to me,โ€ the prince said.

Watching his wife, delicate yet strong against the autumn wind, a pang of sadness welled in his heart. He remembered Carissa's terror when Leona was giving birth.

Rafaelโ€™s gaze turned icy. Samuel Langley!

โ€œLetโ€™s wait until Leona is moved before we take action,โ€ Carissa suggested. โ€œWe donโ€™t want to complicate things. If we arrest Samuel now, a horde of people will rush to Leona. I donโ€™t want to disturb her.โ€

โ€œAlright. Iโ€™ll return to the Supreme Court for now. Once you move Leona tomorrow, Iโ€™ll send someone to arrest Samuel. He harmed his legitimate wife and caused their childโ€™s death. Pushing Leona down the stairs is attempted murder of a royal relative. Thatโ€™s more than enough to arrest him,โ€ Rafael said.

โ€œBut heโ€™s still a top scholar, and he has status,โ€ Carissa lamented.

โ€œIโ€™ll speak to Mr. Murray and have him take it up with the king.โ€ Rafael had nearly forgotten Samuelโ€™s standing. Though Samuel no longer held an official position, he was still considered one of the kingโ€™s favored candidates. They needed to ensure Samuelโ€™s name was struck from the National Examination Register to avoid offending Salvador.

Carissa grasped her husbandโ€™s sleeve, her reluctance evident. She might appear strong to others, but today had genuinely frightened her. This vulnerability showed only to Rafael.

The prince longed to hold his wife, but they were at Gracehold Estate, surrounded by people and servants. He settled for squeezing her hand, saying gently, โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid. Iโ€™m here for you. Iโ€™ll be right by your side whenever you need me.โ€

Carissaโ€™s eyes glistened. Choking back tears, she said, โ€œYou should talk to Mr. Murray. Iโ€™ll stay with Leona. Iโ€™m worried sheโ€™ll be scared if she doesnโ€™t see me when she wakes up.โ€

โ€œAlright. Iโ€™ll wait until youโ€™re inside before I leave. I still need to speak with these people.โ€

Rafael straightened, standing tall in the corridor, exuding a sense of security that eased Carissaโ€™s tension.

When Carissa returned to her cousinโ€™s room, she found Heather by Leonaโ€™s bedside, holding her hand and calling to her.

Anger flared in Carissa. She exchanged a glance with Ivy, who understood and stepped forward.

โ€œLady Heather, Lady Leona is exhausted. Sleep is the best medicine. My mentor instructed that Lady Leona must sleep as much as possible, so please donโ€™t disturb her.โ€

Heather had intended to wake Leona to discuss the divorce, but seeing Carissa, realized the discussion was pointless. She retreated awkwardly.

Carissa took Heatherโ€™s place. Leona was still asleep.

Carissa said calmly, โ€œIvy and I will stay here. Everyone else, please leave.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m her mother. I should be here with her,โ€ Heather insisted.

Carissa shook her head. โ€œNo. You werenโ€™t there for her when she needed you, and she doesnโ€™t need you now. If you really care about her, help her pack her dowry items.โ€

Heather sighed heavily. โ€œCarissa, a divorce wouldnโ€™t be good for her.โ€

Carissa didnโ€™t respond. There was no need to continue the conversation.

Violet chimed in, โ€œIโ€™ll organize her things. Weโ€™ll take everything that can be moved. Who cares who it belongs to? Even if it belongs to the Earl of Graceholdโ€™s family, itโ€™s fair game.โ€

Heather quickly followed Violet out. If the divorce was inevitable, she wouldnโ€™t let anyone use it against her. Once everyone left, Kate and Hazel remained beyond the curtain, leaving only Carissa and Ivy.

Meanwhile, Alana had released Samuel. He knelt, sobbing uncontrollably.

Alana grabbed him by the scruff of his neck and tossed him out. โ€œYou can cry outside.โ€ Though released, Alana kept a watchful eye on him to ensure he didnโ€™t leave Gracehold Estate.
