Chapter 766
Jane quickly stepped forward and helped Poppy assist Viola.
โThe physician said itโs best for you not to move around too much, Madam Viola. You should rest. Madam Zoey can see the princess consort off; you donโt need to.โ
At the mention of โthe princess consort,โ Violaโs anger subsided, replaced by reason. She realized her impulsive behavior stemmed from a moment of anger. If her sister-in-law was going to discuss Violaโs problems, why invite Carissa? Most likely, Carissa was there to discuss the conspiracy involving Eleanor.
Feeling awkward and anxious, Viola hastily curtsied to Carissa before leaving.
Carissa and Violet exchanged glances. What had gotten into Viola this time?
As Zoey escorted them out, Violet asked, โWhatโs Viola doing here so late? Is she staying? Did she have a falling out with her in-laws?โ
Violet wasn't particularly curious; it was simply that Viola always caused a stir. Plus, she had stormed in so recklessly, mentioning something concerning Barrett, clearly related to Carissa. This prompted Violet's question.
Zoey knew family troubles shouldn't be aired publicly, but they were all aware of Viola's flaws. She didnโt hesitate: โItโs a bit of a spectacle. She quarreled with her husband and returned here. Sheโs staying for a few days because sheโs unwell.โ
โBarrettโs been recovering at home after his injury and promotion. It seems odd theyโd argue again, especially involving Carissa,โ Violet said, her expression darkening.
Zoey sighed with a bitter smile. โItโs just unreasonable fussing. Donโt let it bother you, Your Grace, Ms. Spencer.โ
Violet muttered, โTroublemaker.โ
Carissa and Barrett were divorced, yet Viola clung to the past.
After seeing Carissa and Violet off, Zoey returned to the inner courtyard. She spotted Viola waiting outside her quarters. Zoey glanced at her but said nothing, simply going inside. She was thoroughly disappointed in her sister-in-law and didn't feel like speaking. It was hard to reason with someone determined to make trouble; sometimes, kindness couldn't save those intent on self-destruction. If Violet continued causing scenes, it would be more than embarrassing.
โWhy were they here, Zoey?โ Viola asked, hands on her hips, entering Zoey's quarters.
Zoey settled into her seat. Knowing her preference for evening fruit juice, her staff had already prepared some.
After sipping some juice, she replied calmly, โNothing serious. They asked a few questions.โ
Viola frowned. โItโs not aboutโฆthe Grand Princess Eleanor conspiracy case, is it? Was she here to cause trouble?โ
Zoey frowned. โThat kind of talk is asking for trouble. She was here on official business. Even if she asked questions, itโs procedure. If she were here to cause trouble, she wouldnโt come at night without the Capital Guard.โ
โWhat did she want to know?โ
Zoeyโs expression was indifferent. โWhatever it is, itโs none of your concern. Your condition seems stable now that youโre moving around at night. You should return home tomorrow.โ
Violaโs face fell. She had been at Silverstone Estate for three days. Her mother had sent medicine and tonics to Valor Estate, yet no one had come for her.
Barrett couldn't come himself, but surely he could send someone! If no one came, returning like this would be embarrassing. How could she face the Warren family?
Yet, she knew she couldn't stay. She didn't want to continue the cold war with her husband; it weighed on her heart.
Over the past few days, sheโd come to terms with everything. She was carrying Barrettโs child and intended to reconcile. Besides, heโd recently been promoted to Crown Guard commanderโa position close to the king.
Though Carissa commanded the Mystic Army and was his superior, the Crown Guard answered directly to the king, so their dynamics likely wouldn't change much.
Zoey saw through her thoughts. โIโll send someone to take you back tomorrow.โ
Viola pleaded softly, โWhy not send Jane to Valor Estate to get someone to come for me? Returning like this looks bad.โ
Zoey ignored her. โJane, take Viola back to her room.โ
