Chapter 931
Despite kneeling, Rafaelโs posture remained unwavering. โTo demonstrate fairness, I request the Ministry of Justice interrogate Commander Warren, so his testimony can be corroborated. This will reveal the truth to the people of Westhaven. Your Majesty, I do this without personal agenda. The people of Westhaven know more about the village massacre than we do. Shielding Commander Warren will only anger them and suggest we aren't negotiating in good faith.โ
He lifted his gaze, locking eyes with Salvador. His voice grew bolder: โIt will also dishearten the soldiers and citizens of Victory Pass, making them believe you intend to cultivate loyal generals and blame veteran border guards.โ
Crash!
A cup shattered.
Salvadorโs chest heaved; dark fury clouded his eyes. He shouted, โHow dare you?!โ
Derek flinched, quickly begging the king for calm. Turning to Rafael, he pleaded, โYour Highness, please stop! Do not provoke His Majesty further!โ
Salvador stood, his towering figure overshadowing the kneeling Rafael. His eyes were sharp and cold. โSo, your deference and humility were a show? You dare defy me? You accuse me of being harsh to veteran generals? If this gets out, won't the soldiers and people lose faith in me? What are you trying to do?โ
Rafael met his gaze unflinchingly. โEverything I do is for the good of Starhaven, Your Majesty. But I ask you, what do you think I am trying to do?โ
Salvador was furious and taken aback by the princeโs calm. He had removed his brotherโs army command, but hadnโt secured the militaryโs loyalty. After the Southern Frontier campaign, Salvador had kept Rafael from military affairs to gradually diminish his reputation. This was a gradual process, not something easily accomplished, especially nowโthe worst possible time.
Salvadorโs anger subsided, though his fists remained clenched.
โI donโt want to guess your intentions. Since you claim everything you do is for Starhavenโs good, as your brother, I have no reason not to trust you. If you believe interrogating Commander Warren is necessary, I will allow it.โ
Rafael lowered his eyes, his tone respectful. โYour Majesty, you think of me as I think of you. I am deeply grateful, and hope you will believe in my loyalty.โ
Salvador nodded. โWe are brothers; of course I trust you. You may rise.โ
โThank you, Your Majesty!โ
As Rafael stood, he helped Derek up. The aideโs legs wobbled; his face was pale and beaded with sweat. Heโd been completely shocked by the princeโs defiance.
Chapter 931 (continued)
After Rafaelโs departure, Salvador ordered Barrett sent to the Ministry of Justice. This was an official command, not something Rafael had usurped.
Derek expected the kingโs fury, but Salvador spoke calmly: โIs it true that everyone, like Rafael, believes Iโm sparing Commander Warren to build a faction of loyalists to replace the veteran generals?โ
Derek replied fearfully, โYour Majesty, you overthink. The officials and people know your wisdom and benevolence.โ
โWisdom and benevolence? When General Sullivan entered the city, the people praised my wisdom, didnโt they?โ Salvador retorted sarcastically, rubbing his temples.
Derek remained silent, lowering his head. He stood aside, drenched in sweat. The hallโs heat made the air stifling and uncomfortable.
