Chapter 949
Outside the Arcane Sanctum, two lanterns cast a faint glow. As Rafael and his companions arrived on horseback, Carissa, supported by Violet, emerged from the building. Leroy stiffened, his heart pounding. Had they truly failed? A wave of red fury flooded his eyes. It had to be Harveyโthe Starhaven king's agent, not a genuine Westhaven ally.
Carissa's hair was disheveled, her injured arm bandaged. She wore a new garment, likely brought by someone from home. Rafael dismounted and approached her, his voice laced with concern: "Are you alright?"
Carissa, frustrated and aggrieved, replied, "If I hadn't reacted quickly, Commander Icarus would have dislocated my arm. I don't know why he holds such a grudge against meโto attempt my assassination!" Despite her words, she grasped Rafael's hand, patting it reassuringly.
Leroy, hearing the accusation, studied Carissa incredulously, questioning her identity as the Hell Monarch's princess consort. "This is impossible!" he exclaimed, his voice hoarse. "I want to see Commander Icarus. I refuse to believe he would do such a thing!"
Rafael, still holding Carissa's hand, turned to Leroy with an icy expression. "Then we'll go to the Supreme Court and settle this."
Leroy's face paled as he watched Rafael help Carissa onto her horse. Even Violet mounted with agility, her skill evident. She was clearly no ordinary servant.
The Supreme Court remained brightly lit late into the night. Icarus and five captured suicide soldiers were awaiting interrogation by Matthew and his team.
When Leroy entered the interrogation room and saw Icarus, he was stunned. The man was disheveled, a deep lash mark nearly splitting his face. His body was covered in similar woundsโclearly inflicted by a single person, not a group. Leroy instinctively glanced at the red whip at Carissa's waist. Could it be her?
"Mr. Stellwyn!" Icarus urgently called out in Westic.
Leroy, noticing the others present understood Westic, asked, "They say you ambushed the Hell Monarch's wife and injured her. Is that true?"
Before Icarus could respond, Rafael coldly interrupted, "What else could it be? His stealth attire matches the suicide soldiers'. He wasn't strolling in those clothes after a palace banquet, was he?"
Icarus, remembering his attire, realized his predicament. Michael interjected, "A walk? When I arrived with the Capital Guard, they were attacking three people! Commander Sinclair would have been dead if I'd arrived later!"
Matthew demanded, "Your Westhaven spies killed the Sinclair family. Now you attack Commander Sinclair? What deep-seated hatred do you have for them?"
Leroy and Icarus gasped. The Sinclair family's murder by Westhaven sealed the incident as a genuine assassination attempt, damaging Westhaven's image before negotiations. Harvey's approach was a Starhaven ruse.
Leroy locked eyes with Rafael, wanting to reveal Starhaven's involvement through Harvey, but hesitated. This was still speculation. He couldn't keep falling into traps.
