Sending the message to Ellis to meet at the Civil Affairs Department had elicited an almost immediate reply from her. This showed her eagerness, which annoyed him. Victoria stomped her foot. “Easton, you’re not mad at me, are you? Morty acted without your permission, bringing up you and Ellis—”

“I don’t want to hear Ellis’s name,” Easton interrupted with a tight jaw. “And I’m not mad at you.”

The mere mention of Ellis filled his mind with a tangle of irritating and gloomy thoughts; he disliked having his emotions swayed by her.

“But you lost your temper the other night,” Victoria said hesitantly, also a bit fearful, deliberately gauging Easton’s reaction. To this day, Easton had never clarified his intentions about making her his wife, and his behavior at the party had greatly shaken her confidence, leaving her unable to figure out his thoughts. If Easton planned to drag out the divorce with Ellis for another three to five years, that would be a huge loss for her. Ellis was the third party between her and Easton; she couldn’t afford to put herself in the position of the other woman, allowing Ellis to parade around with the Mrs. Hudson title she deserved, making her seem inferior. But Ellis was just an orphan who had leaped to prominence by being taken in by Easton’s mother, Carly, which forced Easton to marry her.

“My anger wasn’t directed at you; it was at Morty. Morty had repeatedly failed to understand simple instructions, and Easton’s patience with him was wearing thin. Don’t overthink it.”

“Easton, it’s just that I care too much about you, your—” Victoria started to explain, but Easton had tuned out after her first few words, not listening to the rest.
