Chapter 152: The Unwanted Invitation
โYeah, I nixed it off. Because I donโt want to be bothered by people who are both idle and petty,โ she said with a smile, though she was really giving Morty a piece of her mind.
Isnโt Morty just the idle and petty type? Doesnโt he have any self-awareness?
โMs. Harper, have you been harassed by someone? Do you need me to teach them a lesson?โ Morty, as if oblivious to Ellisโs insult, stepped closer and opened his WhatsApp code. โI canโt add you, so you add me.โ
Being asked to add him on WhatsApp in public felt like being roasted over an open fire. Ellis cursed Morty repeatedly in her heart, but her face remained impassive.
โSorry, my phoneโs dead,โ she said, offering an apologetic smile.
Her rejection was blatant, and Morty, if he had any shame, should have backed off immediately. Lois hadnโt really understood why Ellis said Morty was deliberately making things difficult for her, but now, with Mortyโs insistence on adding Ellisโs WhatsApp in front of so many people, the harassment was evident.
The atmosphere turned stiff and awkward. Although everyone tried to restrain themselves, the urge to gossip was evident. Glancing at Mortyโs code, Lois pulled out her phone and scanned it, attempting to defuse the tension with a laugh. โI just realized I havenโt added Mr. Morty on WhatsApp either. Iโll add you, and once Ms. Harperโs phone is charged, Iโll forward your contact to her.โ
Morty didnโt say anything in response. After accepting Loisโs friend request, he led his team away.
With the episode over and the Nexus Group gone, those from the Tate Group who felt closer to Ellis quietly messaged her.
โMs. Harper, whatโs your relationship with Mr. Morty? Youโve known each other for six or seven years, why donโt you have his contact?โ
Ellis ignored these messages, not even bothering to send a cursory emoji. She was there to work and earn money, not to satisfy peopleโs curiosity, and she felt no obligation to respond. However, considering Loisโs actions before Morty left, she was slightly worried Lois might forward Mortyโs WhatsApp contact to her.
Lois was like a provider. If she asked me to add someone, could I really refuse? She massaged her temples, feeling a headache coming on.
Fortunately, as she and Lois walked back to work upstairs, Lois said, โIโll send Mortyโs contact to you normally. Whether you add him or not is up to you.โ
With the problem solved, Ellisโs lips curved into a smile.
Remembering the scene in the conference room, Lois asked, โYou and Mr. Morty donโt seem to get along. What caused that? Did you have some kind of falling out?โ
Our bad relationship is all because heโs a snide, two-faced scumbag. Ellis held back from blurting out โour,โ and diplomatically said, โWe donโt really have a big issue; maybe itโs just a clash of personalities. Heโs a bitโฆโ
โYou wonโt need to be involved with Nexus Groupโs cooperation anymore.โ
Lois had previously thought that changing the liaison might be enough, but now it seemed best to keep Ellis completely out of any cooperative efforts with Nexus Group, to prevent Morty from escalating his harassment.

Aside from the time Lois hadnโt stood up to that scumbagโs pressure and had fired her, Lois was generally a good boss, and Ellis was increasingly satisfied with her job.
Shortly after sitting down at her desk, Ellis was focused on editing the meeting records, planning to send them to all participants later, when suddenly a hand appeared in front of her, followed by a coffee and a small cake placed beside her.
Without looking up, just by the Cartier bracelet on the hand, she knew it was Amelia.
โWorking hard, huh? Have some afternoon tea, take a break, and then keep going!โ
Ameliaโs cheerful voice made her question her life choices. Did I look that easy to bribe?
Ellis kept her eyes on her computer, her hands still busy typing, and politely declined with a smile. โThanks! But Iโm on a diet; I really shouldnโt have coffee and cake.โ
โCome on, you donโt need to lose weight!โ Amelia earnestly studied Ellisโs figure. Tall and slender, yet with graceful curves! Ameliaโs exaggerated tone made Ellis seriously wonder if she had left her common sense at home.
Couldnโt she hear that it was a polite refusal, just a nice excuse? Ellis looked away from her computer and glanced at Amelia.
โJust keeping in shape.โ
After being refused repeatedly, Amelia made a gesture as if to hug Ellisโs shoulders, pouting, โCome on, have a bite! This is from Swan Lake Bakery; a small piece costs almost a hundred โ try it!โ
Ellis didnโt understand what Amelia was bragging about. A cake worth almost a hundred dollars worth bragging about? She was embarrassed to say that the custom cakes she used to order cost at least a hundred thousand each, and they werenโt even meant to be eaten, just to look good. Now, a poor, but not so destitute that people should think I couldnโt afford a cake, right?
