Chapter 195: Money Transfer
After inwardly judging him, Ellis took her phone from her bag. It was boring to just stare at the scenery endlessly, so she started scrolling through her Instagram feed. Suddenly, Maya's photo popped up. Recalling Morty's instructions this morning to like her Instagram posts, she gave Maya's photo a like.
As the saying went, โOnce is a habit in the making.โ Ever since Morty first messaged her about it, she had developed a pattern. Whenever he posted something about Maya, and she didnโt like it, he would message her as if she was his personal like button. At times, Morty could be an incredibly childish man.
Their conversation had ended with her remark about discriminating against him. After that, they didnโt speak again until the car pulled up in front of Tate Groupโs entrance. Just as Ellis was about to step out, Morty finally said, โWhy did you discriminate against me?โ
Upon hearing this question, Ellis was in complete disbelief. His reaction time was slow indeed. Why would he ask her this after so long?
โYou always talk with that sarcastic tone, and you know exactly what youโve done. Donโt act like you have no idea why I canโt stand you,โ she snapped. โOh, and you love playing the victim too.โ
To be fair, it wasnโt exactly discrimination. It was just pure dislike. Morty had always been a troublemaker, and even now, he wasnโt much better. If she didnโt dislike him, then who else was more deserving? If she were to rank the people she hated the most, Easton would be at the top, followed by Victoria, and Morty would take third place. These three were equally insufferable. The first two were entirely unforgivable because just looking at them felt like contamination. If it werenโt for her current business ties with Morty, she would have treated him the same wayโas bad luck she wanted nothing to do with. She wouldnโt even bother pretending to be nice.
โI was justโโ Morty started, but his brain seemed to stall, unable to piece together a defense.
โAnything you say is just an excuse, and I donโt want to hear it,โ Ellis cut him off. She swung the door open, stepped out of the car, and walked away without looking back.
Looking at her receding back, a smile appeared on Mortyโs face. Hearing his boss being openly discriminated against, the driver instinctively glanced at the rearview mirror to gauge his reaction. Surprisingly, there wasnโt a hint of displeasure on Mortyโs face. Instead, he seemed to be in a good mood, his faint smile carrying a trace of indulgence. Moreover, before stepping out of the car, he was fully engrossed in his phone, fingers clearly typing away.
The first thing Ellis did upon returning to the office was head to HR to relay Loisโ order, ensuring that Amelia was out by the end of the day. Well, better to handle it swiftly and avoid any complications. Once that was settled, she moved on to the PR department to discuss the press release for the launching ceremony and other related matters. Finally, she returned to the executive office to handle her own work.
Time flew by as she buried herself in work, and before she knew it, night had fallen. Stretching lazily, Ellis ended yet another busy day. Before she left the office, she picked up her phone and checked if there were any missed calls or texts.
She habitually clicked on her WhatsApp. Amidst the flooding messages, Mortyโs texts were the most eye-catching ones. He had forwarded her a money transfer notification, stating that he had transferred her 26 thousand dollars.
Chapter 195: Money Transfer
Well, she was no exception to the temptation of money. With her curiosity and temptation for money, she clicked into their chat box.
Morty wrote, โI was wrong before. Iโm sorry. Please forgive me. I donโt know what kind of gifts you like, so hereโs a small gift from me: please accept it and buy something for yourself with that money.โ
Mortyโs sudden apology, coupled with a sincere money transfer? Once again, Ellis found herself unable to fully understand Morty. He was acting completely out of character. Lately, he had not only maintained a polite and mild demeanor around her, but he had also been surprisingly generous. Compared to his usual annoying behavior, he seemed like a completely different person. But if she looked further back, there had been times when he acted normally before.
She was tempted to accept the money, but the moment she recalled how Morty had once โframedโ her for cheating, her irritation resurfaced. Ignoring his message, she decided to leave him hanging. Whatever the reason behind his recent politeness, she wasnโt about to let her guard down, let alone be swayed by a bit of money. Staying cautious would only benefit her; better safe than sorry.
After finishing up her replies to other important messages, Ellis suddenly remembered that Sophia had called her earlier. She pulled up her call log, found Sophiaโs number, and pressed dial.
It was late at night when Ellis called Sophia. She asked, โFinally free?โ
โYep.โ Ellis tugged some of the hair on her face away and said, โMadam Sophia, you called me today. Whatโs the matter?โ
Although Sophia had countered her before by saying, โCanโt I look for you just because?โ, Ellis knew there must be a reason.
โItโs still about that matter. Send me your bank account details.โ Sensing that Ellis was about to refuse again, Sophia simply added, โDoesnโt matter if you donโt send it. I can find it myself. Just keep an eye on your account in the next few days.โ
