Chapter 223: The Chase Is On!

Morty hadnโ€™t spoken very clearly, but Ellis understood the meaning behind his words, which caused her face to darken. Victoria had threatened her; if she dared send the surveillance video to Easton, she would have someone beat her up.

Easton, having received the surveillance video, only mentioned that Victoria would receive the punishment she deserved. As for what that punishment entailed, Easton didnโ€™t specify, and Ellis was left unsure if Victoria was actually punished at all.

From the ordeal of being kidnapped, Ellis had realized early on that relying on Easton to protect her was a foolish fantasy. Now, with Victoria seeking revenge, counting on Easton was out of the question. The most reliable person she could count on was always herself; she had to save herself because she couldnโ€™t rely on anyone else.

Looking at Morty, who had tipped her off, Ellis slightly raised an eyebrow. โ€œYouโ€™re telling me this without fear of Victoria causing you trouble?โ€

โ€œShe canโ€™t trouble me; I stumbled upon this by accident,โ€ Morty stepped forward, closing the distance between them.

โ€œMorty, youโ€ฆโ€ Ellis pursed her red lips. โ€œYouโ€™re really bizarre!โ€

Bizarre to an utterly perplexing degree! Morty rolled his eyes around, lost in thought. Ellis had no interest in waiting for Morty to say something more, nor could she feel grateful towards him. In her eyes, Victoria was no good, and Morty was in cahoots with her. According to the logic of birds of a feather flocking together, Morty was no good either.

Just as she was about to walk away, Morty suddenly spoke up. โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€ His apology came so unexpectedly that Ellis stiffened in shock.

โ€œLast time, sending you flowers was too presumptuous of me, and quite bold,โ€ Mortyโ€™s gaze shifted away from Ellisโ€™s face. So it was an apology!

Ellis frowned. โ€œYou realize that was presumptuous and bold? Donโ€™t you think thatโ€™s a bit neurotic?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t all girls like flowers? I thought, having offended you, Iโ€™d pick something girls like to make it up to you without thinking too much.โ€

โ€œWho told you all girls like flowers? Even if they do, whether they like the person sending the flowers is also crucial.โ€ Morty could tell Ellis was pointing at him; she didnโ€™t like him.

Under her disdainful gaze, he changed the subject. โ€œCan you afford a bodyguard? I suggest you hire one to escort you to and from work, and other places too. Lifeโ€™s hassles! One annoyance after another, couldnโ€™t I have some peace?โ€

Suddenly, Ellis thought about Eastonโ€™s previous suggestion for her to move to another city. Now, the idea of relocating crossed her mind. A change of scenery, breaking away from the existing circle, not dealing with the messy people and things, would certainly be more pleasant. But then, there was a practical issue! Changing environments meant risking her $140,000 annual salary job, which she was reluctant to give up. When it came to comfort versus money, for her at the moment, money was undoubtedly more important.

She looked at the early evening city lights and, without acknowledging Morty any further, walked on. She didnโ€™t look back and missed the changing expressions on Mortyโ€™s faceโ€”annoyance, depression, reflection.

half-dead, feeling utterly soul-weary.

Ellis, who had gone to bed on time, saw her come in and greeted her before heading back to her room to sleep.

โ€œEllis, Carly contacted me and asked me to pass on a message. Maya gulped down a full glass of water to soothe her parched throat. Tomorrow night at seven, you should stop by the Misaki Restaurant.โ€

Unable to reach Ellis herself, Carly had instead asked Maya to relay the message. Ellis felt helpless. โ€œJust block Carlyโ€™s contact information for me!โ€

โ€œI did, but she had someone talk to my law office.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t mean for you to listen to her; Iโ€™ve opened my eyes. Carly is, as you said, excessively persistent.โ€ Maya didnโ€™t need to ask Carlyโ€™s intent; she guessed it was probably to set Ellis up on a blind date. โ€œIโ€™m just complaining about her.โ€

Remembering Edric, whom she had been neglecting, Ellis was at a loss for words. Even if she agreed to the blind dateโ€ฆ what then! Sheโ€™d merely go through the motions; she certainly wouldnโ€™t fall in love or marry the guy.

โ€œForget about her and whoever she sends.โ€ Ellis thoughtfully poured Maya another glass of water and then went to her room to sleep.

Before sleeping, her brain cells were buzzing, thinking about Mortyโ€™s tip-off. To avoid getting beaten up, no matter where she went, she had to stay under the watch of surveillance cameras and keep her wits about her.

The next day, Ellis left for work with a case of paranoia, scanning her surroundings meticulously to ensure her safety before daring to proceed. In the evening, she operated similarly. Unexpectedly, just as she stepped out of her office building, Mortyโ€™s driver approached her, saying he was instructed by Morty to drive her to and from work.

Her paranoia justified, she suspected Morty and his people of harboring ill intentions; she certainly couldnโ€™t just hop into their car without care.
