Chapter 234: Unexpected Confrontation
This place was clearly a hub for office workers. Is Morty sure about bringing me here to find Victoria?
Hearing this, Morty looked down at Ellis, his face showing curiosity. โSheโs here,โ he said after a pause. โHer company leases space here.โ
Victoria was from a wealthy family; it wasnโt like she needed to work for someone else. Did Morty mean that Victoria owned a company? Are we walking into enemy territory? And without the police, what was Morty thinking?
Ellisโs eyes filled with suspicion as she tilted her head slightly, sizing up Morty. Her expressive eyes almost seemed to speak. From Mortyโs perspective, it was as if her face was asking, โWhat are you up to?โ
He explained, โI donโt mean you any harm.โ
Harmful or not, Ellis hadnโt noticed any. But Mortyโs actions were becoming increasingly opaque, like a thick fog. What was he hiding behind that fog?
As they reached the floor, Morty stepped out of the elevator first and led the way. Approaching Victoriaโs company, Ellis felt a twinge of hesitation. She didnโt fully trust Morty and was a bit worried he might stab her in the back.
Finally, looking into Mortyโs clear eyes, she decided to go in. Morty seemed like a regular here; no one stopped him, and he moved about freely. Thus, they smoothly made their way to an office door. The door plaque of the bossโs office was quite conspicuous; she figured Victoria had to be inside.
Morty didnโt knock; he just pushed the door open. At that moment, Victoria was leisurely leaning back in her chair, thinking of the slap she had received and the one she had returned to Ellis today, and considering the other troubles Ellis faced. Victoriaโs mood was greatly uplifted, a break from her recent gloom as she awaited feedback.
However, the office door opened without her permission. Victoria immediately sat up straight and looked toward the door. Morty and Ellis were standing there! Ellisโs left cheek was swollen, her appearance a bit disheveled. Victoria hadnโt anticipated that Morty would bring Ellis to her.
Seeing Ellis in such a sorry and almost comical state, Victoria couldnโt even revel in her surprise before Morty stepped up to her. โVictoria, stand up!โ
Mortyโs approach was fierce, giving Victoria an ominous feeling. But sitting down made her feel at a disadvantage, so she stood up, tilting her chin up proudly, โMrโฆโ
She barely started speaking when a blur of motion crossed her vision. Then came a slap, resounding through the room. In an instant, Victoria was stunned, and so was Ellis.
Morty said he was bringing her to find Victoria, and Ellis had thought it was to inform her of Victoriaโs whereabouts so she could call the police on Victoria. She never expected that upon seeing Victoria, Morty would slap her without a word.
Is this an illusion? Ellis blinked several times in shock. The pain spread quickly, and Victoria, astounded, covered her face, unable to believe Morty had hit her.
Chapter 234: Unexpected Confrontation
Then, she angrily demanded, โMorty, are you hitting me over some floozy?โ
โI warned you not to hire people to beat up Ellis,โ Morty said, pulling out a handkerchief to wipe his hand that had struck Victoria. โYou didnโt listen; donโt blame me for being rude.โ
Throughout her life, Victoria had been slapped twice. Once by Ellis, and now by Morty, both because of Ellis.
Unable to contain her anger, Victoria dropped her hand from her face and charged at Ellis. Her target was Ellisโs hair, then her face. As the threat neared, Ellis didnโt just stand there to be attacked. She stepped back, dodging, and Morty easily stepped in front of her, stopping Victoria.
A month ago, Morty had realized he liked Ellis, but Victoria couldnโt fathom his affection reaching such an extent that heโd turn on her and slap her for Ellisโs sake.
Now blocked again by Morty, old grievances and new anger combined, Victoria lost her cool and screamed, โI wonโt let this tramp Ellis get away with this! Morty, you and your thing for used wenches wonโt end well either!โ
Ellis was utterly confused. The term Victoria had just used was strange enough. What wench? Hearing about worn-out wenches again, she couldnโt help but wonder. Am I being called a worn-out wench? Why is she considered such? Why would Victoria insult me like that? And why is Morty being accused of messing with worn-out wenches?
Victoriaโs erratic yelling and behavior were like those of someone mentally unstable in the midst of an episode. Morty held her back, finding it somewhat amusing. โWorn-out wenches isnโt the term you should use for your own gender. Before you insult us, you might want to worry about your own situation.โ
Glancing around the office, his eyes finally rested on the chair Victoria had just vacated. โYour company was pulled up by Eastonโs charity efforts. Without Eastonโs help, your company would be near bankruptcy, and the Brooks familyโs downfall is coming as fast as a rollercoaster ride. You canโt last much longer in high society. What makes you think I wonโt end well?โ
