Iโm the Obsession of My Cold-Hearted Ex
Chapter 259: Back to Stonebridge
His urgency made her feel like he was trying to find a new caregiver. Lazy to think so much, Ellis asked, โAre you trying to switch to someone new?โ
โNo. When you sent me to university a few days ago, she saw you. Iโm afraid sheโd think Iโm a playboy,โ Casey said sincerely.
Ellis pursed her lips. โI didnโt send you alone; the driver was there too.โ
Before she could continue, Casey eyed her and said, โYour salary will be the same, but your workload reduced. Itโs good, right?โ
If Casey didnโt need her care, she would need to fly back. Her peaceful and quiet days would end. She hadnโt had enough!
Ellis tried her best to say, โThen, I wonโt send you to university. This wayโฆโ
โNo way! If youโre older and uglier, then I will consider letting you stay! With your pretty face, itโs easy for her to misunderstand our relationship.โ
Casey had never really taken a close look at Ellisโs appearance before, but now that he had someone he liked, he had to admit that Ellis was indeed attractive. He didnโt want any unnecessary misunderstandings to arise before his pursuit even had a chance to succeed.
Ellis was rendered speechless. After a brief silence, she accepted her fate.
Who wouldโve thought that within just a month of arriving in Averton, Casey would be struck by romance, and that her own youth and beauty would become a disadvantage in the workplace?
The mere thought of returning to Stonebridge and dealing with all the frustrating people and situations there gave her a headache.
At Stonebridge International Airport, Maya stood at the arrival terminal, looking around for Ellis. When she saw Ellis walking out with a dull expression, like she didnโt want to be back, Maya said, โSince youโre back, donโt be afraid of some scumbag. Iโm here!โ
Ellis massaged her temples. โSo annoying!โ
โChill out!โ Maya helped her take her luggage and said, โWeโve not seen each other for a month; before we head back, letโs go at something good!โ
Maya perked up when she heard about good food. She was Chinese. Back in Averton, Loisโs dad hired a Chinese chef for Casey and her, and they also ate at a Chinese restaurant, but it wasnโt as good as the local food here.
โWhat do you wanna eat?โ Maya asked.
โItโs cold. Letโs have barbecue!โ
โSure!โ
After deciding on what to eat, the two of them headed straight for the airport exit. Along the way, Ellis noticed the numerous small decorations hanging around the airport, celebrating the arrival of Christmas and New Yearโs.
She couldnโt help but sigh. โTime flies. The new year is almost here.โ
Just last year, she wouldnโt have imagined how drastically her life would change within a year.
โYeah,โ Maya glanced at her. โThe new year is next month. Any plans?โ
โNo plans. Iโll just go with the flow.โ
โHow can you just go with the flow on New Yearโs?โ
Ellis let out a sigh. To her, the new year held no special meaning. She had long lost any blood relatives, had no one she loved, and was entirely on her own. Every day felt more or less the same.
Thinking back, last year she had still been looking forward to having an adorable child the year after, imagining a happy little family of three with Easton. But now, all of that had turned to dust. She had escaped from that marriage.
Though, Easton was really something else! The moment she rejected his proposal to remarry, he vanished without a trace. She had initially worried that he would keep pestering her, but in the end, he disappeared as if he had never even mentioned remarriage. That was fine by her, as it meant less trouble to deal with.
Maya checked her watch and said, โAfter barbecue, I need to stop by Nexus Groupโฆโ
Nexus Group had recently strengthened its collaboration with their law firm, leading to an increased workload. Maya had been working overtime to handle all the affairs, and picking up Ellis at the airport was time she had squeezed out of her busy schedule.
Hearing the name โNexus Groupโ felt somewhat unfamiliar to Ellis. Ever since Morty had taken her to see Victoria, she had sensed that he had some feelings for her. After their last meeting, he disappeared from her life; he no longer asked her to like his social media posts, nor did he initiate conversations as often.
The last message he had sent her was on her second day in Averton; he had asked if she had gone abroad. His final words were, โWish you success in your work!โ
This confused Ellis. It seemed like he didnโt like her, or did he pick up on her rejection and stop pursuing her so that he could avoid rejection?
Pulling her thoughts back, she asked, โAre there a lot of things to do?โ
โYep.โ Maya nodded.
After getting in the car, the two of them arrived at a chain barbecue restaurant. During the meal, Maya kept checking her phone frequently with a frown.
Ellis understood her body language at a glance. It was classic overworked employee stress.
