Chapter 275: Motherโs Worry
โUh-huh,โ Easton nodded. โCome on, try calling her with a softer tone; let me hearโฆโ He faltered. For some reason, Easton found he couldnโt utter the word; it felt awkwardly subconscious. He realized he wanted Ellis to make all the necessary changes. He was indeed used to calling her by her full name and found it hard to suddenly change.
Sensing her sonโs hesitation, Sophia sighed. โA child that canโt be taught.โ Sophia didnโt hide her disdain, and Easton, puzzled, asked, โDoes loving someone mean having to change myself completely? Canโt I just be myself?โ
โItโs not about changing who you are completely! But when you love someone, you should be willing to change for them, and some changes happen uncontrollably.โ Sophia pointed out two major issues through her sonโs words. First, he seemed to place himself above Ellis. Second, he wanted to have his cake and eat it tooโhe wanted to win her back without giving much in return.
After hearing Sophia, Eastonโs brow furrowed, and he finished his breakfast in silence. Based on his current attitude, Sophia was deeply worried. If he couldnโt shift his unappealing mindset toward Ellis, his path to reconciliation would be very long.
As her son got ready for work, she suggested, โWhen you have time, try to chat with Ellis, share a bit of your day-to-day life with her.โ
Easton looked at his mother silently, then pursed his lips. โEllis has deleted and blocked all my contacts. If I try to reach her with a different number, she cuts me off as soon as she realizes itโs me.โ
Sophia took a deep breath. Truly, she didnโt want to meddle in whether her son remarried or not anymore. Her son was as stubborn as a mule! Repeating to herself several times, โHe is my own child,โ Sophia calmed down. Her son didnโt speak further and left for work. Watching his retreating figure, she picked up her phone and dialed Ellisโs number.
It had been over a month since Sophia last called, and Ellis still remembered what Sophia had said during their last conversation. Somewhat resistant, she pretended to be too busy to notice the call. After one attempt, Ellis didnโt answer, and Sophia didnโt call again. Her son was indeed her own flesh and blood; she couldnโt just ignore matters related to his happiness.
But her foolish son made it difficult for her to lend a hand. Fortunately, with the year-end approaching, she found an excuse to arrange a โcoincidentalโ meeting between her son and Ellis.
Unable to reach Ellis by phone, Sophia sent her a WhatsApp message: โThe New Year is coming: how many days off does your company give?โ Ellisโs phone rushed to shift from showing a missed call to displaying a new WhatsApp message. Ellis checked it but didnโt reply. Replying quickly would tell Sophia she had deliberately ignored the call. While her former mother-in-law was nice, too much interaction was inappropriate given her distaste for Easton, and Sophiaโs question felt slightly off. Why the sudden interest in my holiday plans?

Madam Sophie trying to help him achieve his goalโฆ
Ellis didnโt suspect Sophia of malice, but reality forced her to consider all possibilities.
She closed the chat and continued with her work, not wanting to be distracted by Sophia, but her mind occasionally flickered with doubts, unable to understand what Easton saw in remarrying her. He clearly didnโt love her! Could he be planning something detrimental during the marriage period? Thinking this, Ellis pulled up the digital version of her prenuptial agreement. After a quick review, she felt a sudden urge to slap Easton.
The three years married to Easton had taught her nothing but lessons. Even if Sophia acted as Eastonโs advocate, it wouldnโt sway her in the slightest. No matter how nice a mother-in-law could be, it didnโt compensate for a terrible husband because she had to live with her husband, not Sophia.
โMs. Harper, this document needs Madam Loisโs signature. Could you please review it first to see if there are any issues?โ
Lost in thought, Ellis was startled by her colleagueโs voice. She had to pretend nothing was amiss as she exited the document on her computer.
โSure.โ
As she took the document from her colleague, who might have been bored waiting for her to finish, he made small talk. โMs. Harper, do you know what prizes we have for this yearโs company gala?โ
With the year-end gala approaching, Ellis wasnโt much interested. โI havenโt checked, actually.โ Her tone stretched at the end, hinting she wasnโt interested in discussing the gala, and her colleague wisely chose to drop the conversation.
