Chapter 349: Blind Spots in Love and Trust

Her late husbandโ€™s shadow hung over her son, making it hard to question whether he was her biological child, even if she wanted to.

After pouring Easton a cup of tea, she gave it to him slowly. โ€œHave some tea.โ€

Easton was not in the mood for tea. He placed the cup on the table as soon as he had it.

โ€œDrink it while itโ€™s hot,โ€ instructed Sophia.

Easton, feeling agitated and confused, took several sips at her insistence.

Before Easton could set down his cup, his mother remarked, โ€œDid that tea manage to connect to the water in your brain?โ€

Eastonโ€™s face instantly darkened. โ€œMom, what do you mean by that?โ€

โ€œJust checking if your brain is filled with water,โ€ his mother replied with exaggerated politeness, though her eyes were full of disdain. โ€œWhere did your brain cells go? Or is your head filled with mush?โ€

Easton was speechless. After all, this was his own mother. If she wanted to criticize him, he might as well let her.

Sophia poured herself a cup of tea, sipped it slowly, and then said, โ€œDo you really think thereโ€™s any trust left between you and Ellis?โ€

Easton instinctively responded, only to realize his lips were slightly parted, and he couldnโ€™t quite find the right words.

Trust? He thought carefully for a moment. โ€œIt exists.โ€

Although his answer was affirmative rather than a denial, he wasnโ€™t entirely confident.

โ€œYou hesitated just now,โ€ Sophia pointed out calmly.

โ€œI hesitated becauseโ€ฆโ€ Easton didnโ€™t understand why his mother had suddenly shifted the conversation in this direction. โ€œOur trust is probably pretty weak.โ€

โ€œAside from being weak, have you ever considered that maybe thereโ€™s actually no trust at all?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s impossible.โ€

Her sonโ€™s denial came too fast, so fast that Sophia almost wanted to call him her foolish son once again.

Sophia set her teacup down and looked directly at Easton. โ€œIf Ellis trusted you, then when you explained that you didnโ€™t cheat with Victoria, she wouldnโ€™t have called you a performer. Makes sense now, doesnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œEllisโ€ฆโ€ Easton pressed his thin lips together. โ€œSheโ€™s just got a bad temper. Sheโ€™s annoyed that I keepโ€ฆโ€

He was quite used to Ellis scolding him by now. Still, there were certain remarks that rubbed him the wrong way, leaving him upset and stirring up some negative emotions.

โ€œDummy Son, try looking at things from Ellisโ€™s perspective, will you?โ€ Sophia couldnโ€™t stand seeing her sonโ€™s intelligence being spent entirely on work, with barely a shred left for managing his relationship with Ellis.

โ€œFrom her perspective? How?โ€ Easton was puzzled.

โ€œIs it really that hard to put yourself in someone elseโ€™s shoes?โ€

โ€œYeah, it is.โ€

Sophia almost choked on her breath. โ€œWhatโ€™s so hard about it?โ€

โ€œWell,โ€ Easton answered honestly, โ€œIโ€™ve never really had to. Iโ€™ve always just looked at things from my own perspective.โ€

As the third generation of the Hudson family, heโ€™d been born at the top of the pyramid. Maybe not the very top at first, but the moment he secured his inheritance, he found himself right at the peak, like he was living on cloud nine.

From that height, there was never a need to consider anyone elseโ€™s viewpoint, to care about what they thought or how they felt. People bowed down to him, and he did whatever he pleased.

At that moment, Sophia couldnโ€™t help but admit sheโ€™d failed in raising her son. People canโ€™t go through life only seeing things their way; learning to empathize and consider othersโ€™ feelings is crucial.

If her son really wanted to win back Ellis and rebuild their relationship, heโ€™d have to learn to see things from her perspective; to fully understand why Ellis decided to divorce in the first place, what triggered her decision, and to dig deeper into why sheโ€™s refusing to reconcile now.

Sophia patted her chest, taking a moment to calm herself.

โ€œIf you refuse to see things from her perspective, how will you ever understand what sheโ€™s feeling?โ€ Sophia motioned for Easton to place his hand over his heart. โ€œFor example, imagine you thought Ellis was cheating on you. What would your first reaction be?โ€

Eastonโ€™s eyes hardened as he remembered what Morty had done at that moment.

โ€œI never once believed Ellis was cheating,โ€ Easton said coldly. โ€œBut someone did try to mislead me into thinking she was. My first reaction was that it couldnโ€™t be true. I trusted her enough to know that.โ€

Back then, with how clingy Ellis used to be, practically glued to his side 24/7, and considering the comfort and status that came with being with Sophia, she wouldnโ€™t have been foolish enough to cheat with someone inferior to him.

Sophiaโ€™s expression grew even more displeased. She had half a mind to point at the door and tell him to leave. This stubborn boy, he probably came here just to test her patience!

Taking a few deep breaths to calm herself, she said, โ€œWhen a husband cheats, any wife who has feelings for him is going to be hurt first, then angryโ€”angry that he betrayed her! Do you get that?โ€

โ€œWould Ellis even feel hurt or angry if she never loved me?โ€

When it came to whether or not Ellis had ever loved him, Easton couldnโ€™t seem to find a clear answer. He really wanted to believe that she had once loved him. But how could he forget that, for wealth and status, sheโ€™d drugged him, forcing herself into his life as his woman? Step by step, sheโ€™d worked her way up, charming his mother and convincing her to pressure him into marrying her. He hadnโ€™t forgotten any of it.

Sophia once again felt like she couldnโ€™t catch her breath, her face darkening with frustration.
