Iโm the Obsession of My Cold-Hearted Ex
Chapter 349: Blind Spots in Love and Trust
Her late husbandโs shadow hung over her son, making it hard to question whether he was her biological child, even if she wanted to.
After pouring Easton a cup of tea, she gave it to him slowly. โHave some tea.โ
Easton was not in the mood for tea. He placed the cup on the table as soon as he had it.
โDrink it while itโs hot,โ instructed Sophia.
Easton, feeling agitated and confused, took several sips at her insistence.
Before Easton could set down his cup, his mother remarked, โDid that tea manage to connect to the water in your brain?โ
Eastonโs face instantly darkened. โMom, what do you mean by that?โ
โJust checking if your brain is filled with water,โ his mother replied with exaggerated politeness, though her eyes were full of disdain. โWhere did your brain cells go? Or is your head filled with mush?โ
Easton was speechless. After all, this was his own mother. If she wanted to criticize him, he might as well let her.
Sophia poured herself a cup of tea, sipped it slowly, and then said, โDo you really think thereโs any trust left between you and Ellis?โ
Easton instinctively responded, only to realize his lips were slightly parted, and he couldnโt quite find the right words.
Trust? He thought carefully for a moment. โIt exists.โ
Although his answer was affirmative rather than a denial, he wasnโt entirely confident.
โYou hesitated just now,โ Sophia pointed out calmly.
โI hesitated becauseโฆโ Easton didnโt understand why his mother had suddenly shifted the conversation in this direction. โOur trust is probably pretty weak.โ
โAside from being weak, have you ever considered that maybe thereโs actually no trust at all?โ
โThatโs impossible.โ
Her sonโs denial came too fast, so fast that Sophia almost wanted to call him her foolish son once again.
Sophia set her teacup down and looked directly at Easton. โIf Ellis trusted you, then when you explained that you didnโt cheat with Victoria, she wouldnโt have called you a performer. Makes sense now, doesnโt it?โ
โEllisโฆโ Easton pressed his thin lips together. โSheโs just got a bad temper. Sheโs annoyed that I keepโฆโ
He was quite used to Ellis scolding him by now. Still, there were certain remarks that rubbed him the wrong way, leaving him upset and stirring up some negative emotions.
โDummy Son, try looking at things from Ellisโs perspective, will you?โ Sophia couldnโt stand seeing her sonโs intelligence being spent entirely on work, with barely a shred left for managing his relationship with Ellis.
โFrom her perspective? How?โ Easton was puzzled.
โIs it really that hard to put yourself in someone elseโs shoes?โ
โYeah, it is.โ
Sophia almost choked on her breath. โWhatโs so hard about it?โ
โWell,โ Easton answered honestly, โIโve never really had to. Iโve always just looked at things from my own perspective.โ
As the third generation of the Hudson family, heโd been born at the top of the pyramid. Maybe not the very top at first, but the moment he secured his inheritance, he found himself right at the peak, like he was living on cloud nine.
From that height, there was never a need to consider anyone elseโs viewpoint, to care about what they thought or how they felt. People bowed down to him, and he did whatever he pleased.
At that moment, Sophia couldnโt help but admit sheโd failed in raising her son. People canโt go through life only seeing things their way; learning to empathize and consider othersโ feelings is crucial.
If her son really wanted to win back Ellis and rebuild their relationship, heโd have to learn to see things from her perspective; to fully understand why Ellis decided to divorce in the first place, what triggered her decision, and to dig deeper into why sheโs refusing to reconcile now.
Sophia patted her chest, taking a moment to calm herself.
โIf you refuse to see things from her perspective, how will you ever understand what sheโs feeling?โ Sophia motioned for Easton to place his hand over his heart. โFor example, imagine you thought Ellis was cheating on you. What would your first reaction be?โ
Eastonโs eyes hardened as he remembered what Morty had done at that moment.
โI never once believed Ellis was cheating,โ Easton said coldly. โBut someone did try to mislead me into thinking she was. My first reaction was that it couldnโt be true. I trusted her enough to know that.โ
Back then, with how clingy Ellis used to be, practically glued to his side 24/7, and considering the comfort and status that came with being with Sophia, she wouldnโt have been foolish enough to cheat with someone inferior to him.
Sophiaโs expression grew even more displeased. She had half a mind to point at the door and tell him to leave. This stubborn boy, he probably came here just to test her patience!
Taking a few deep breaths to calm herself, she said, โWhen a husband cheats, any wife who has feelings for him is going to be hurt first, then angryโangry that he betrayed her! Do you get that?โ
โWould Ellis even feel hurt or angry if she never loved me?โ
When it came to whether or not Ellis had ever loved him, Easton couldnโt seem to find a clear answer. He really wanted to believe that she had once loved him. But how could he forget that, for wealth and status, sheโd drugged him, forcing herself into his life as his woman? Step by step, sheโd worked her way up, charming his mother and convincing her to pressure him into marrying her. He hadnโt forgotten any of it.
Sophia once again felt like she couldnโt catch her breath, her face darkening with frustration.
