Chapter 377: Accidents and Intentions

She wasnโ€™t saying she was taken advantage of, and Cameronโ€”especially as a manโ€”definitely didnโ€™t get the short end of the stick either. Pretending nothing happened was the best solution for both of them.

โ€œYou should get some more rest.โ€ With that, Ellis ended the call.

โ€œMs. Harper,โ€ Cleveland appeared as she looked down at her phone. Ellis offered a professional smile.

โ€œDrewโ€™s got a stomachache. He wonโ€™t make it to the cafeteria. Do you want to bring Mr. Maxwellโ€™s lunch up, or should I?โ€ Cleveland asked out of formality, but clearly intended to do it himself. He just wanted Ellis to be aware.

โ€œT1 go.โ€ Ellis stood up without hesitation and headed straight to the cafeteria. She had to eat anywayโ€”grabbing lunch for her boss at the same time was no trouble.

But she wasnโ€™t dumb enough to eat first and then bring Maxwell his lunch. She packed two mealsโ€”left hers on her deskโ€”then went to Maxwellโ€™s office.

Just as she raised her hand to knock, the door opened from the inside. She didnโ€™t react in time. The door bumped her hand, knocking the food right out of it and onto the floor.

Maxwell hadnโ€™t expected to hit anyone when he opened the door. But there she wasโ€”Ellisโ€”standing outside, staring at the spilled lunch with a frozen expression. His eyes followed hers to the mess on the ground.

โ€œMs. Harper, what are you doing standing at the door?โ€

โ€œI was bringing you lunch, Mr. Maxwell.โ€ Ellis hesitated, wondering whether she should go repack it herself or ask someone else to do it. As she spoke, she bent down to pick it up.

It was late springโ€”getting hotโ€”and most people had already switched to light summer clothes. Ellis was no exception. So when she leaned forward, Maxwell accidentally caught a glimpse down her neckline. Donโ€™t stare. Maxwell quickly looked away.

Oblivious, Ellis picked up the ruined food and gave him an apologetic smile.

โ€œIโ€™ll have someone bring you another one, Mr. Maxwellโ€”โ€

โ€œAlright.โ€

With that, Ellis turned to toss the food. As she turned, she noticed something oddโ€”Maxwell looked unusually stiff. Was he avoiding looking at her on purpose? Sheโ€™d only been on the job for a few days, and from what she could tell, Maxwell seemed pleased with her performance. There hadnโ€™t been any signs he had an issue with her.

Whatever. Breakfast hadnโ€™t been enough to carry her through the morning workload, and right now she was starving. Whatever that weird moment was, she brushed it off and moved on.

That night, Ellis dragged her exhausted body home. Maya, who had supposedly taken a day off to rest, wasnโ€™t homeโ€”and hadnโ€™t said where sheโ€™d gone either. Ellis thought it was strange and messaged her on WhatsApp.

โ€œOut. I might not come back tonight.โ€

Reading the reply, Ellis immediately called her.

โ€œYouโ€™re not coming home? What are you doing?โ€

โ€œGot an emergency case. Trialโ€™s in a few days. I need to rush and find new evidence.โ€ Maya let out a dramatic groan at the end. Her client had told her that afternoon that they couldnโ€™t provide the evidence theyโ€™d mentioned earlier. Not wanting to lose the case, Maya had no choice but to dig up something new.

โ€œBe careful.โ€ Ellis ended the call with a reminder, then collapsed on the couch. She lay flat, unmoving, staring up at the ceiling.

Wish I had X-ray vision. Iโ€™d check what heโ€™s doing up there. And please, please donโ€™t come knocking tonight.

Work had drained her. She didnโ€™t have the energy to deal with Easton and didnโ€™t want to get worked up again. Maybe someone heard her prayer, because Easton didnโ€™t show up at all that night. So Ellis fell asleep peacefully.

In the middle of the night, while Ellis slept soundly, Easton was still wide awake. His mind was full of Ellis. His heart beat a little faster, just like it had the night before. That feelingโ€”strange, indescribableโ€”kept swirling inside him, mixed with uncertainty.

Heโ€™d come to realize that yes, he had feelings for Ellis. And yes, he was in love with her. But getting from that realization to convincing her to marry him again felt like an impossible journey.

What now?

In all his twenty-eight years, the hardest challenge Easton had ever faced was getting Ellis to stay his wife. Of course, it wasnโ€™t just about getting remarried. He wanted her to fall deeply in love with him.

Maya didnโ€™t come home for several days in a row, and Ellis figured she was still hunting for evidence. But then the weekend rolled around, and she finally saw Maya againโ€”dressed up and heading out.

โ€œYou usually go for comfort when youโ€™re working,โ€ Ellis said with a raised brow.

โ€œIโ€™m not just working todayโ€”Iโ€™ve got a date,โ€ Maya replied casually.

โ€œA date? With who?โ€
