Chapter 377: Accidents and Intentions
She wasnโt saying she was taken advantage of, and Cameronโespecially as a manโdefinitely didnโt get the short end of the stick either. Pretending nothing happened was the best solution for both of them.
โYou should get some more rest.โ With that, Ellis ended the call.
โMs. Harper,โ Cleveland appeared as she looked down at her phone. Ellis offered a professional smile.
โDrewโs got a stomachache. He wonโt make it to the cafeteria. Do you want to bring Mr. Maxwellโs lunch up, or should I?โ Cleveland asked out of formality, but clearly intended to do it himself. He just wanted Ellis to be aware.
โT1 go.โ Ellis stood up without hesitation and headed straight to the cafeteria. She had to eat anywayโgrabbing lunch for her boss at the same time was no trouble.
But she wasnโt dumb enough to eat first and then bring Maxwell his lunch. She packed two mealsโleft hers on her deskโthen went to Maxwellโs office.
Just as she raised her hand to knock, the door opened from the inside. She didnโt react in time. The door bumped her hand, knocking the food right out of it and onto the floor.
Maxwell hadnโt expected to hit anyone when he opened the door. But there she wasโEllisโstanding outside, staring at the spilled lunch with a frozen expression. His eyes followed hers to the mess on the ground.
โMs. Harper, what are you doing standing at the door?โ
โI was bringing you lunch, Mr. Maxwell.โ Ellis hesitated, wondering whether she should go repack it herself or ask someone else to do it. As she spoke, she bent down to pick it up.
It was late springโgetting hotโand most people had already switched to light summer clothes. Ellis was no exception. So when she leaned forward, Maxwell accidentally caught a glimpse down her neckline. Donโt stare. Maxwell quickly looked away.
Oblivious, Ellis picked up the ruined food and gave him an apologetic smile.
โIโll have someone bring you another one, Mr. Maxwellโโ
โAlright.โ
With that, Ellis turned to toss the food. As she turned, she noticed something oddโMaxwell looked unusually stiff. Was he avoiding looking at her on purpose? Sheโd only been on the job for a few days, and from what she could tell, Maxwell seemed pleased with her performance. There hadnโt been any signs he had an issue with her.
Whatever. Breakfast hadnโt been enough to carry her through the morning workload, and right now she was starving. Whatever that weird moment was, she brushed it off and moved on.
That night, Ellis dragged her exhausted body home. Maya, who had supposedly taken a day off to rest, wasnโt homeโand hadnโt said where sheโd gone either. Ellis thought it was strange and messaged her on WhatsApp.
Chapter 377: Accidents and Intentions
โOut. I might not come back tonight.โ
Reading the reply, Ellis immediately called her.
โYouโre not coming home? What are you doing?โ
โGot an emergency case. Trialโs in a few days. I need to rush and find new evidence.โ Maya let out a dramatic groan at the end. Her client had told her that afternoon that they couldnโt provide the evidence theyโd mentioned earlier. Not wanting to lose the case, Maya had no choice but to dig up something new.
โBe careful.โ Ellis ended the call with a reminder, then collapsed on the couch. She lay flat, unmoving, staring up at the ceiling.
Wish I had X-ray vision. Iโd check what heโs doing up there. And please, please donโt come knocking tonight.
Work had drained her. She didnโt have the energy to deal with Easton and didnโt want to get worked up again. Maybe someone heard her prayer, because Easton didnโt show up at all that night. So Ellis fell asleep peacefully.
In the middle of the night, while Ellis slept soundly, Easton was still wide awake. His mind was full of Ellis. His heart beat a little faster, just like it had the night before. That feelingโstrange, indescribableโkept swirling inside him, mixed with uncertainty.
Heโd come to realize that yes, he had feelings for Ellis. And yes, he was in love with her. But getting from that realization to convincing her to marry him again felt like an impossible journey.
What now?
In all his twenty-eight years, the hardest challenge Easton had ever faced was getting Ellis to stay his wife. Of course, it wasnโt just about getting remarried. He wanted her to fall deeply in love with him.
Maya didnโt come home for several days in a row, and Ellis figured she was still hunting for evidence. But then the weekend rolled around, and she finally saw Maya againโdressed up and heading out.
โYou usually go for comfort when youโre working,โ Ellis said with a raised brow.
โIโm not just working todayโIโve got a date,โ Maya replied casually.
โA date? With who?โ
