Chapter 38: A Crash and an Unwelcome Reunion

Ellis was just about to speak when the car suddenly jolted, as if it had lost control. A strong force slammed her forward, followed by a deafening crash. For a moment, everything blurred. Stars danced in her vision, and her head spun.

Maya had slammed on the brakes. She had been bracing for it, so she wasnโ€™t as disoriented as Ellisโ€”but not by much. As her senses returned, Ellis realized they had crashed into another car. The front of both vehicles was dented, paint scraped off, looking like a complete mess.

Maya got a good look at the car they had hit and instantly paled. โ€œShโ€”t,โ€ she whispered.

Since Ellis hadnโ€™t been driving, she hadnโ€™t been paying attention to the road and wasnโ€™t sure who was at fault. But seeing Mayaโ€™s reaction, she immediately said, โ€œCall the police and let them determine liability. Also, call your insurance!โ€

Maya wasnโ€™t clueless about handling an accident. The problem was who they had hit. Her face turned ashen. โ€œHey! Thatโ€™s a Ferrari!โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ Ellis said, not immediately grasping the problem.

โ€œThatโ€™s all you have to say?โ€ Maya groaned in despair. โ€œThat thing is worth millions! My car is barely worth a fraction of that. A regular person like me crashing into a luxury car? This is a disaster!โ€

Ellis finally understood. She was about to comfort Maya when the Ferrariโ€™s driver got outโ€”a young man radiating hostility. He stomped over, swearing under his breath, and banged aggressively on their car window.

โ€œAre you blind or just stupid? You actually had the guts to crash into me? Get out here, now!โ€

The guy looked downright violent. Neither Ellis nor Maya was dumb enough to step out in a situation like this. Staying inside the car was the safest option.

Seeing them remain seated, the young manโ€™s face twisted with rage, turning him into something out of a nightmare. Maya quickly called the police while Ellis checked that the car doors were locked. If that man managed to yank the door open, things would get bad.

While they were handling that, another person stepped out of the Ferrari. With the car damaged, Bree was debating whether to have her family driver pick her up or let Jerry handle the situation before taking her home. As she walked over to Jerryโ€™s side, she noticed someone in the other car who looked familiar.

Then it hit her. It was Ellis. The memory of Ellis slapping her last time resurfaced instantly. Anger surged through her, and she pointed straight at Ellis. โ€œJerry, donโ€™t let them off the hook!โ€

That Ferrari was a limited edition that had taken Jerry ages to get his hands on. He had barely owned it for a few days, and now it was wrecked and in need of repairs. His heart was bleeding. And the ones who hit him! They were hiding inside the car, refusing to come out.

Consumed by rage, Jerry pounded on the window even harder. โ€œGet out! Now!โ€

Now there were two of themโ€”one of whom they recognized. Ellis and Maya exchanged a look. Of course. What terrible luck.

Ellis rubbed her temples. โ€œOur luck is justโ€”โ€

Before she could finish, Jerry lost all reason. He grabbed a rock from the side of the road and smashed it against the car door. A loud, jarring bang echoed, followed by the shattering of the window.

With their protective barrier gone, Mayaโ€”who was sitting in the driverโ€™s seatโ€”was now face-to-face with Jerry. Dealing with someone this aggressive required caution.

Maya immediately forced a smile and apologized. โ€œSir, Iโ€™m very sorry. I didnโ€™t mean to crash into your car!โ€

Jerry sneered, his eyes sweeping over Maya, then Ellis, then the car. In the modern world, a personโ€™s car was like their status symbol. The type of car someone drove could tell you a lot about their social class. Mayaโ€™s car was a basic, budget-friendly vehicleโ€”something any middle-class person could afford. One look was enough to label both her and Ellis as nobodies.

Even through his anger, Jerryโ€™s mind still wandered to certain thoughts. A beautiful woman stood out no matter the situation. Ellisโ€™ delicate features were impossible to ignore. His eyes lingered on her face before he finally tossed the rock aside.

โ€œBoth of you, get out. We need to talk about compensation.โ€

Bree added, โ€œThey should buy you a brand-new car!โ€

Mayaโ€™s mouth twitched. The police hadnโ€™t even determined who was at fault yet, and they were already demanding a brand-new replacement car? Were they idiots!

Maya glanced at Ellis, silently asking if they should step out. Ellis shook her head. That man looked like he had no problem resorting to violence. She had no intention of getting out and facing himโ€”or Bree.
