Chapter 384: Ghosts in the Room
โThereโs no such thing as knowing ahead of time, justโโ
Ellis had just started to comfort Maya when she suddenly sat upright, her expression turning serious.
โI heard Mortyโs leaving Nexus Group. His uncle kicked him out.โ
It was a rumor, not confirmed. Maya had only mentioned it in passing, like sharing a piece of gossip during a casual chat.
โLeaving?โ Ellis frowned. The mention triggered a memoryโZion had sent someone to Kyrador to find her. โIs that for real? What happened between him and his uncle? Why would he kick him out?โ
โI donโt work inside Nexus Group,โ Maya lifted her hands to show she didnโt have any insider info. โIf you really want to know, I can ask around when Iโm back at the firm on Monday.โ
If Morty had been kicked out while Maya was on vacation, Ellis couldnโt help wondering if Easton had a hand in it. Around that time, Easton had just found out Morty liked her. But even now, Ellis didnโt suspect Easton. As far as she could tell, Easton had a lot of time on his handsโbut not enough to waste it targeting Morty.
She waved it off.
โI donโt want to know. Donโt ask around.โ
Maya nodded.
โAlright.โ
On Monday, Ellis arrived at work right on time and dove straight into her tasks. Then Maya called.
โHoly crap! I didnโt go digging, but I just got reliable infoโMorty was fired by his uncle after they had a serious falling out.โ
Ellis had told her not to ask, and Maya had respected that. But Morty had always been her main point of contact at Nexus Group. Today, without warning, someone else took over. Before she could even say anything, the new contact had already explained,
โMr. Morty resigned last week. Iโll be handling things from now on.โ
Big clients like Nexus Group were always monitored closely. One of Mayaโs coworkers, seeing she hadnโt heard yet, kindly filled her in on the internal drama. As soon as she heard it, Maya couldnโt wait to share it with Ellis.
Ellis wasnโt surprised. It made sense. Morty wasnโt the one in chargeโZion was. If the two had a serious conflict, Zion kicking him out of the company he ran wasnโt shocking.
Still, under the surface, she couldnโt shake the feeling that Easton mightโve had something to do with itโbut at the same time, she instinctively felt like he didnโt.
After a moment, she decided it didnโt matter. None of it concerned her. She shoved the thought aside.
She ended the call and refocused on work.
Not long after, Cleveland came by and told her theyโd be heading out for fieldworkโvisiting one of the companyโs local hotels to assess operations. Just as she was getting ready, Maxwell joined in, saying the three of them would go together.
So, they set out. Maxwell brought two assistants along. A driver wasnโt necessary. The only issueโwho would drive?

The boss obviously wasnโt going to. Cleveland was her senior, but she was new, eager to impress, and happened to be able to drive. So, without thinking twice, Ellis volunteered to take the wheel.
Cleveland had been about to step into the driverโs seat, but when he saw Ellis already there, he quietly stepped back insteadโstealing a glance at Maxwellโs reaction in the back. His boss didnโt say a word, but there was a hint of something in his eyesโlike he was assessing Cleveland.
Yeah, getting reassigned was no accident. It wasnโt just about capability; Maxwell probably thought he lacked initiative.
Sitting next to Maxwell in the back, Cleveland felt like he was on pins and needles. Ellis, on the other hand, focused on the road. She didnโt overthink it. She followed the GPS and didnโt pay attention to the awkward silenceโit wasnโt unusual. Her boss was back there. What were they supposed to chat about?
When youโre aiming for job stability or a promotion, itโs not about doing whatever you wantโitโs about using your head.
Maxwell, deep in work thoughts, didnโt even notice his two assistantsโ awkward dynamic.
When they arrived at the hotel, Cleveland jumped out of the car the second it stopped, practically racing to open the door for Maxwell in hopes of redeeming himself.
Ellia pretended not to see it. It wasnโt the first time sheโd seen someone try to curry favor with the boss.
But the moment she saw the hotel sign, her stomach turned. Of all placesโit had to be this one. The same hotel where Easton had been drugged and she had taken advantage of the situation and slept with him.
Back then, the memory was bittersweet. Painful, but mixed with something warm. No matter how many times she tried to explain that she hadnโt been the one to drug him, Easton had never believed her. He was convinced sheโd done it on purposeโjust to climb into his bed and become his wife.
That same man who once looked down on her like she was nothingโwas now shamelessly trying to win her back.
Her expression must have changed. Cleveland noticed and asked,
โMs. Harper, are you feeling okay? You donโt look so good.โ
