Chapter 400: I Donโ€™t Want a Secondhand Man

Easton still hadnโ€™t given up on the idea of getting back together. But with his status and resources, he had no shortage of women willing to marry him. All he had to do was say the word, and theyโ€™d be lining up. Even if he didnโ€™t want any of those women, he could take his time, meet someone new, and remarry eventually. He didnโ€™t have to hang himself from the tree that was her.

โ€œIf you teach me how to ask, Iโ€™ll learn,โ€ Easton said seriously. Sure, heโ€™d never begged anyone for anything before. But if begging Ellis would change her mind, heโ€™d do it.

Ellis just stared at him like heโ€™d been struck by lightning. She could hardly keep a straight face. Was she losing her mind, or was Easton completely insane? Maybe the whole world was. Did he seriously just say that if she taught him how to beg, heโ€™d do it?

She took a deep breath and forced herself to stay calm. โ€œAnd why the hell would I do that? Youโ€™ve already been annoying enough, messing up my life like some obsessive stalker. You think Iโ€™ve got nothing better to do than teach you how to pester me more efficiently?โ€ Not that begging would help anyway.

After what she went through with Easton, she had permanent PTSD. The man was used goods. There was no way in hell sheโ€™d take back something that had already belonged to Victoria. That would be betraying herself. And everyone would laugh in her face.

โ€œYou used to chase after me too, remember?โ€ Easton reminded her. โ€œI never gave you crap for it.โ€

Her chest tightened. Yeah, he never called her desperate, but that didnโ€™t mean he had the right to do the same thing now. She clenched her fists to stop herself from snapping and decided to just lay it out.

โ€œIโ€™m not taking you backโ€”not just because of everything youโ€™ve done, but because I think youโ€™re disgusting.โ€ Her words were clear and sharp. โ€œYou know what that means, right? When I say I think youโ€™re gross?โ€

Easton stiffened. Yeah, he knew what that meant. Heโ€™d been insulted enough times to understand.

โ€œI never cheated on you with Victoria,โ€ he said quickly.

โ€œDoesnโ€™t matter. Whether or not you slept with her, youโ€”โ€ she hesitated. Even though she wasnโ€™t some naive little girl and theyโ€™d been together countless times, saying this out loud still made her cringe. โ€œYou were engaged to her. Thatโ€™s a fact.โ€

โ€œThat engagement was before I met you. My grandfather arranged it. I didnโ€™t know back then that Iโ€™d end up marrying you.โ€ He meant it as an explanation, but she wasnโ€™t having it.

Ellis crossed her arms, eyes full of contempt. โ€œI said youโ€™re secondhand, and I meant it.โ€

Eastonโ€™s face darkened. โ€œThatโ€™s just an excuse.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a reason,โ€ she corrected. โ€œUsed is used. I donโ€™t want anything secondhand. Wanting to marry you back then was a momentโ€ฆโ€ She paused, then added, โ€œBefore you, Iโ€™d never even dated anyone. Never had a guy in my life.โ€

Easton fell completely silent.

And contrary to what Ellis assumed, he wasnโ€™t suddenly enlightened or aware of his shortcomings. No, Easton was just kicking himself for ever thinking love didnโ€™t matter, and for letting his grandfather dictate so much of his life.

โ€œGet out.โ€

He still didnโ€™t say anything, so she bent down, shoved the gift bag onto the ground between them, and slammed the door in his face.

Right on cue, Maya returned from work and spotted Easton outside the door. By now, it was nothing new. Seeing her best friendโ€™s ex lurking around had become totally normal. She walked up, used her fingerprint to unlock the door, and asked casually, โ€œLooking for Ellis again, Mr. Hudson?โ€

โ€œAlready talked to her,โ€ Easton replied.

Maya smiled awkwardly and turned back to open the door.

โ€œWait.โ€ Easton stopped her, and she instantly regretted it. God, was he seriously trying to make her his delivery girl again? There was the damn bag, the same one as before. Maya recognized it immediately.

โ€œCould you take this in for me?โ€ Easton said, holding it out.

Yup. Just as sheโ€™d thought. Maya didnโ€™t even reach for it. โ€œMr. Hudson, youโ€™re wasting your time. Ellis isnโ€™t going to take it, and I donโ€™t want to be stuck in the middle of this.โ€ And to be clear, the โ€œstuck in the middleโ€ thing? Total exaggeration. She had no problem standing by Ellisโ€”she just didnโ€™t want to waste her time being Eastonโ€™s unpaid courier, especially since Ellis would just end up giving it back anyway.
