Chapter 60: Digging Too Deep
Finished work left unfinished always called for an apology. As soon as Ellis got home, she immediately called Casey. Feeling a little guilty, she said, โSorry, I had a run-in with my soon-to-be ex-husband. I didnโt think things would turn out like that.โ
โYouโve got terrible taste in men, idiot,โ Casey retorted.
She cleared her throat. โI have a name. Use it.โ
โI checked the security footage. You were the one who let your husband in. You two arenโt turning my house into your personal loversโ quarrel zone, are you?โ Casey, used to living alone and not fond of uninvited guests, was already struggling to adjust to the new housekeeper his mother had arranged. Now Ellis and her husband had caused a scene in his home. He wasnโt happy.
โLoversโ quarrel with that scumbag? Are you blind? I was tryingโฆโ Before she could finish, the call cut off. Ellis blinked, then realized Casey had hung up on her. He wouldnโt snitch to Lois, would he? Rubbing her temples in frustration, she muttered a string of curses aimed at Eastonโs ancestors.
The next day, Ellis went to work as usual. The moment she arrived, Lois called her into her office. Seeing the slight seriousness in Loisโs expression, the first thing that came to mind was that Casey had ratted her out. Bracing herself, Ellis hurried inside and began to speak before Lois could, โMadam Lois, about last nightโโ
Lois raised a hand, signaling her to stop, then handed her a file. For a split second, Ellis thought it was a termination letter. A million-dollar salary, gone just like that. She mentally chalked up the loss to that damn scumbag. Keeping her face neutral, she took the file.
Lois asked, โDid you know Mr. Easton has been looking into you? His search led him straight to me.โ
Ellis blinked in confusion. โYou mean Easton?โ
โYes, hum.โ
โWhy is he looking into me?โ
โHe didnโt dig too deep. As soon as he found out you were working as my secretary, he stopped.โ Lois had received word of it last night. She initially thought Easton was coming after her for poaching his employee, but it turned out to be something else entirely.
Ellis wasnโt sure how to react. That scumbag was probably trying to see if she had actually cheated on him. And who the hell had taken those photos of her and Casey? If she ever found out, sheโd make sure to beat them to a pulp.
Lois asked, โIs your divorce finalized?โ
Ellis shook her head. โNo.โ
โHow much longer will it take?โ
โWellโฆโ Ellis couldnโt give a definite answer. She had initiated the divorce, but Easton refused to sign. On top of that, the prenuptial agreement put her at a disadvantageโsince she was the one asking for the divorce, Easton could easily throw obstacles in her way. She had no idea how long it would take to get it done.
โDivorce isnโt a simple process, especially when assets are involved. Splitting them takes time,โ Lois warned her. โBe prepared for Easton to find out youโre working for me.โ
Now understanding why Lois had called her in, Ellis exhaled in relief and nodded. โUnderstood, Madam Lois.โ
So what if Easton found out she was working for Lois? People change jobs all the time. Was she supposed to be tied to his damn company forever?
โGet back to work,โ Lois gestured toward the file. โGet the documents stamped and distributed before noon.โ
Ellis hesitated, debating whether to mention last nightโs events. In the end, she remained standing.
โYou have something to say?โ Lois glanced at her, then smirked. โWondering if Casey ratted you out?โ
Ellis lowered her head slightly, embarrassed.
โThat bratโs a handful, but as long as you do your job, let him complain all he wants. It wonโt change anything.โ Lois had no plans to replace her secretary, no matter how much Casey whined.
That should have reassured Ellis, but instead, she grew curious. โMadam Lois, if you donโt mind me asking, Iโm not a childcare expert. Why not hire a professional?โ
โIโve tried. None of them worked out, regardless of gender.โ
โWhat was the problem?โ
โYou donโt need to know. Just rememberโyouโre the best fit for now.โ Lois was firm in her decision.
Realizing she had pushed too far, Ellis dropped the subject, took the documents, and left.
Meanwhile, at the Hudson Group headquarters, Jackson stood in the CEOโs office, feeling the air grow increasingly tense. His bossโs mood had been bad from the start, but now it was plummeting fast. After reviewing the documents, Easton tossed them onto his desk and stared straight at his assistant. โThis is all you found?โ
โYes, Mr. Easton,โ Jackson said hurriedly, barely resisting the urge to raise his hand and swear to the heavens that he had done his job thoroughly. The boss had ordered a full report on Ellis last night. Jackson had worked tirelessly to gather every detail, compiling the information as fast as possible. And yet, despite his efforts, his boss was still unhappy. Jackson was terrified but also a little intrigued.
