Chapter 84: Final Words

Easton felt as if his blood flowed sluggishly, the air around him too thin to breathe.

He stared at her intently, then asked in a slower tone than usual, โ€œIโ€™ll ask you one more time: are you sure you donโ€™t want to be my wife, even if it means leaving with nothing?โ€

Ellis nodded firmly, replying with emphasis, โ€œI am absolutely certain!โ€

Before she could finish speaking, the deadbeat released her hand and turned his back. His behavior was inexplicable, leaving her puzzled.

Just as Ellis considered saying more to affirm her decision to divorce, the deadbeat spoke coldly, โ€œDonโ€™t come to regret your decision and end up crying and begging to remarry me! And handle Carly!โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t regret it!โ€ Ellis assured him.

But managing Carly? That was impossible. Every time she mentioned divorcing the deadbeat, Carly interfered. It was rare for Ellis to change Carlyโ€™s mind, yet Carly was fixated on getting a share of the deadbeatโ€™s wealth. She didnโ€™t even want to think about what Carly would do upon learning Ellis was leaving without a penny.

โ€œCarlyโ€ฆ I canโ€™t handle her; you can, right?โ€ she pondered. โ€œCarlyโ€™s also your aunt, and you have control over her finances; she should be easy for you to manage.โ€

โ€œYou want a divorce, and I should handle everything?โ€ Easton turned back, his cold eyes fixed on her. โ€œMy mother and Carlyโ€”you havenโ€™t dealt with them, and youโ€™re leaving all the trouble for me.โ€

โ€œHow was I supposed to know theyโ€™d be this difficult?โ€ Ellis felt oddly like divorcing the deadbeat was just as hard as wanting to marry him. โ€œTime is a good healer; theyโ€™ll come around eventually.โ€

She didnโ€™t want to devise a clever solution for handling Carly and Sophia; time would have to suffice.

โ€œYou never learn, always acting on your whims and preferences without considering the consequences! What great things can you achieve? Donโ€™t get fired by Lois in a few months, ending up unable to find even a decent job!โ€

โ€œStop judging me so harshly!โ€ Ellis turned away. โ€œWhether Iโ€™m sensible or not is none of your business.โ€

Everyone has their own definition of sensible. To the deadbeat, she definitely wasnโ€™t. Thinking back, she often acted on feelings and preferences without considering the consequences. Like the time he didnโ€™t want her working at his company, and she insisted on not only working there but also being his assistant. He didnโ€™t want her accompanying him to meetings or business trips, but she went anyway.

โ€œWith your shameless persistence, if you run out of money and come asking me for help, you could starve right in front of me, and I wouldnโ€™t give you a dime.โ€

Easton had made up his mind. Once the divorce papers were signed, heโ€™d teach Ellis a lesson immediately, and Carly wouldnโ€™t be spared either. Ellis had said she was willing to give up the glamour of being Mrs. Easton and was content with an ordinary life. Well, she and Carly could live in poverty together. Heโ€™d see how long she regretted her words.

โ€œBeing rich is so great, huh?โ€ Ellis snapped back, feeling it was childish, but then changed her tune. โ€œRight, being rich is great! But I can support myself; donโ€™t expect me to ask you for money!โ€

Suddenly faced with the deadbeatโ€™s accusations of shamelessness and persistence, Ellis wished she could go back in time and slap her past self for chasing after him. Wake up, heโ€™s not worth it!

Easton forced a laugh, shaking off the darkness in his heart. โ€œBeing my wife put you so high up, you couldnโ€™t see how hard the fall would be. When you finally crash, youโ€™ll realize just how bitter it is to know you canโ€™t turn things around.โ€

Chapter 4: Final Words

With all her drama and antics, he might as well be a good guy today and let her experience the bitterness of life without him.

The privileges of being Eastonโ€™s wife were well known to Ellis, and she understood what she would lose. But the deadbeat seemed to be brainwashing her, making her believe she could have been Eatonโ€™s wife for life. Her choice to divorce him was her not recognizing the good she had.

She rolled her eyes slightly upwards, restraining herself. โ€œAre you trying to lure me with the promise of being your wife for life? Stop joking; even if I hadnโ€™t asked for a divorce, you would have. You never wanted a life with me.โ€

Easton had never considered spending his life with Ellis. Hearing her accusation, he pressed his lips together, unsure what to say. There seemed to be nothing worth countering. Marrying her hadnโ€™t been his desire but a result of pressure from Sophia and Carly, and her closing in on him. At that time, it seemed only marrying her would satisfy everyone and make them happy.

Looking at the silent man, Ellis was not surprised at all.
