Chapter 84: Final Words
Easton felt as if his blood flowed sluggishly, the air around him too thin to breathe.
He stared at her intently, then asked in a slower tone than usual, โIโll ask you one more time: are you sure you donโt want to be my wife, even if it means leaving with nothing?โ
Ellis nodded firmly, replying with emphasis, โI am absolutely certain!โ
Before she could finish speaking, the deadbeat released her hand and turned his back. His behavior was inexplicable, leaving her puzzled.
Just as Ellis considered saying more to affirm her decision to divorce, the deadbeat spoke coldly, โDonโt come to regret your decision and end up crying and begging to remarry me! And handle Carly!โ
โI wonโt regret it!โ Ellis assured him.
But managing Carly? That was impossible. Every time she mentioned divorcing the deadbeat, Carly interfered. It was rare for Ellis to change Carlyโs mind, yet Carly was fixated on getting a share of the deadbeatโs wealth. She didnโt even want to think about what Carly would do upon learning Ellis was leaving without a penny.
โCarlyโฆ I canโt handle her; you can, right?โ she pondered. โCarlyโs also your aunt, and you have control over her finances; she should be easy for you to manage.โ
โYou want a divorce, and I should handle everything?โ Easton turned back, his cold eyes fixed on her. โMy mother and Carlyโyou havenโt dealt with them, and youโre leaving all the trouble for me.โ
โHow was I supposed to know theyโd be this difficult?โ Ellis felt oddly like divorcing the deadbeat was just as hard as wanting to marry him. โTime is a good healer; theyโll come around eventually.โ
She didnโt want to devise a clever solution for handling Carly and Sophia; time would have to suffice.
โYou never learn, always acting on your whims and preferences without considering the consequences! What great things can you achieve? Donโt get fired by Lois in a few months, ending up unable to find even a decent job!โ
โStop judging me so harshly!โ Ellis turned away. โWhether Iโm sensible or not is none of your business.โ
Everyone has their own definition of sensible. To the deadbeat, she definitely wasnโt. Thinking back, she often acted on feelings and preferences without considering the consequences. Like the time he didnโt want her working at his company, and she insisted on not only working there but also being his assistant. He didnโt want her accompanying him to meetings or business trips, but she went anyway.
โWith your shameless persistence, if you run out of money and come asking me for help, you could starve right in front of me, and I wouldnโt give you a dime.โ
Easton had made up his mind. Once the divorce papers were signed, heโd teach Ellis a lesson immediately, and Carly wouldnโt be spared either. Ellis had said she was willing to give up the glamour of being Mrs. Easton and was content with an ordinary life. Well, she and Carly could live in poverty together. Heโd see how long she regretted her words.
โBeing rich is so great, huh?โ Ellis snapped back, feeling it was childish, but then changed her tune. โRight, being rich is great! But I can support myself; donโt expect me to ask you for money!โ
Suddenly faced with the deadbeatโs accusations of shamelessness and persistence, Ellis wished she could go back in time and slap her past self for chasing after him. Wake up, heโs not worth it!
Easton forced a laugh, shaking off the darkness in his heart. โBeing my wife put you so high up, you couldnโt see how hard the fall would be. When you finally crash, youโll realize just how bitter it is to know you canโt turn things around.โ
Chapter 4: Final Words
With all her drama and antics, he might as well be a good guy today and let her experience the bitterness of life without him.
The privileges of being Eastonโs wife were well known to Ellis, and she understood what she would lose. But the deadbeat seemed to be brainwashing her, making her believe she could have been Eatonโs wife for life. Her choice to divorce him was her not recognizing the good she had.
She rolled her eyes slightly upwards, restraining herself. โAre you trying to lure me with the promise of being your wife for life? Stop joking; even if I hadnโt asked for a divorce, you would have. You never wanted a life with me.โ
Easton had never considered spending his life with Ellis. Hearing her accusation, he pressed his lips together, unsure what to say. There seemed to be nothing worth countering. Marrying her hadnโt been his desire but a result of pressure from Sophia and Carly, and her closing in on him. At that time, it seemed only marrying her would satisfy everyone and make them happy.
Looking at the silent man, Ellis was not surprised at all.
