Chapter 88: Dollars and Drama

โ€œWhatโ€™s there to ask?โ€ Ellis thought it completely unnecessary. She shoved Jackson aside, then flung open the door to Eastonโ€™s office. Seeing him inside, she snapped, โ€œMy phone!โ€

Ellis stormed in, seething as if he owed her somethingโ€”which he did, since he had taken her phone. Easton remembered the image of her glued to her phone, treating him like he was invisible. A slight smile curled at the corner of his lips as she pointed to his desk. Easton didnโ€™t say a word, but his gesture was enough for Ellis. Seeing this, Jackson tactfully made his exit.

And then he was even more confused. What exactly is going on between Mr. Easton and Ellis? Is Ellis realizing she is about to be broke?

Spotting her phone on the desk, Ellis strode over. Her steps halted beside Easton, her hand reaching out, just inches from the phone. Her hand was suddenly grabbed by a large one. Easton, still seated, spoke down to her from his elevated position. โ€œI transferred $28,000 to you this morning. After deducting $315, send it back to me.โ€

โ€œAre you kidding me! Youโ€™re nickeling and diming over $28,000?โ€ Ellis had been thrilled about the $28,000 influx that morning, but now Easton was asking for it back, striking her like lightning.

โ€œIf you think $28,000 is such a trivial amount, why donโ€™t you just give it to me?โ€

Ignoring the $28,000 given by Easton, her net worth was just around $28,000, so to her, $28,000 was not a small amount. But since he was asking for it back, she had no choice but to comply. Reluctantly, Ellis freed her hand from his grip and begrudgingly operated her phone.

โ€œYou caused me to come here and grab my phone, making me take the afternoon off. You owe me a dayโ€™s pay!โ€ She did some quick math. โ€œIโ€™ll transfer you $27,000.โ€

โ€œFine,โ€ Easton said coolly.

Since they werenโ€™t connected on WhatsApp, Ellis had no choice but to ask Easton to show his bank account. The moment she transferred the money and entered her passwords, it hurt. The windfall was gone!

With her phone back and the money returned to Easton, she briskly walked out. Thinking it over, she felt rather dejected. Not willing to let her fate be completely controlled by Easton, Ellis turned back and glared at him.

Unable to beat Easton, she slammed the door with all her might as she left. The sound was nearly seismic, reverberating throughout the office. Easton watched the door the furious girl had slammed.

Calling Ellis childish was an overestimation on his part. Whenever something didnโ€™t go her way, she was quick to throw a tantrum. Yet, when they first got married, her temper had tended to be milder.

That evening, at a certain restaurant, Ellis was morose and irritable, not having managed to divorce Easton. Dining with her, Maya watched her ferociously eat beef as if she were chewing Easton out, offering comfort, โ€œDonโ€™t rush; thereโ€™s always a way to handle it.โ€

The road ahead looked bleak. Ellis shut her eyes and spitefully cursed, โ€œWould the heavens please let Easton and that witch Victoria just drop dead?โ€ If Easton dropped dead, not divorcing him would be the best thing ever for her, more thrilling than winning a $140,000 lottery daily, as she could legitimately inherit his vast fortune.

"You need to show her the prenup. Maybe she can help."

"His mother wonโ€™t let us divorce, and even if I show her the prenup, Easton wonโ€™t agree to nullify it."

"Cry your eyes out; maybe sheโ€™ll soften and really go after Easton for you."

Ellis rubbed her temples and said, โ€œIโ€™ll try bringing this to his mother another day.โ€ Actually, she had considered crying in front of Sophia. But without genuine sadness, crying was difficult; she couldnโ€™t fake it. Threatening Easton with tears earlier was just her blowing off steam.

โ€œTry it, youโ€™ll never know unless you try,โ€ Maya suggested. โ€œTake the prenup to his mother tomorrow. Better sooner than later, before Easton gets any shadier ideas.โ€

โ€œHmmm,โ€ Ellis nodded. She had worked less than an hour today. Although Easton compensated for the docked pay due to her leave, she didnโ€™t want to take another day off and planned to visit Sophia after work tomorrow. At this point, regardless of how strange it might seem to Sophia to see the prenup, averting crisis was paramount.

The next day at noon, Ellis was deeply engrossed in her work when a familiar colleague returned from the first floor, placed a document envelope on her desk, and said, โ€œEllis, I went to pick up a package downstairs, and someone sent something for you too, so I brought it up.โ€

โ€œThank you,โ€ Ellis reflexively thanked him. A moment passed, and she blinked in confusion. Who had sent me something? She paused her work and opened the document envelope.
