Kenneth was completely baffled by his absurd dorm assignment. It was June, summer break loomed, and classes were intensifying. Dorm living was mandatory, but sharing a room with Tiffany? It had to be a mix-up.
After a moment of shock, Kenneth concluded Tiffany was responsible. She claimed to want to end their engagement, yet somehow prevented his parents from agreeing. Now, she was inserting herself back into his life, seeking his attention and creating opportunities for them to be together. The thought sickened him.
He slammed the dorm assignment notice onto Tiffany's desk, barely suppressing his outburst: "You were behind this, weren't you? Impressive, Tiffany. I really underestimated you!" Tiffany glanced at the notice, quickly piecing together his anger.
She didn't know who had arranged their shared room, but Kenneth clearly blamed her. She couldn't believe his imagination. Seeing his furious expression, she laughed.
"What makes you think you're so special?" she retorted. "Instead of accusing me, why don't you ask your parents?" This arrangement couldn't have happened without the Harpers' approval. Since they refused to end the engagement, Tiffany wondered what they saw in her. They disliked her, yet wouldn't break things off, even pressuring her family.
After speaking her mind, Tiffany dismissed Kenneth. "You're blocking my light. Move along."
For what felt like the hundredth time, Kenneth stormed out, seething. Sandra, meanwhile, had wisely avoided recent attempts to undermine Tiffany. After their last encounter, she'd learned to bide her time, determined to avoid mistakes and wait for her father's plan to succeed. But today, each line on the dorm assignment list felt like a stab. Tiffany and Kenneth under the same roof? "If Kenneth starts to fall for Tiffany," she thought, "where would that leave me?"
Hesitating, unsure what to do, Sandra was tapped on the shoulder. "Your precious Kenneth just left," Tiffany said. "Aren't you going to chase after him?"
"What do you mean?" Sandra asked suspiciously.
Ignoring Sandra's wariness, Tiffany offered a cryptic suggestion: "Even if you can't change the arrangement, you could always add another person to the mix…"
With that, Tiffany walked away. The Harpers likely arranged the assignments, so a change seemed improbable. Since Tiffany wasn't thrilled about living with Kenneth either, adding Sandra might create entertaining drama when Kenneth's "dream girl" appeared.
Sandra's eyes lit up. Of course! Moving in too would prevent anything between Tiffany and Kenneth while bringing her closer to him. It was perfect. With renewed purpose, she bolted after Kenneth.
Tiffany leaned back, stifling a yawn. She knew Sandra would succeed. If Sandra couldn't manage this, how had she fooled everyone with her seemingly kind-hearted act in Tiffany's past life?
Two hours later, Sandra's name appeared on the dorm assignment list. The new arrangements were implemented swiftly. After classes, everyone headed to their assigned dorms. Being a private, elite school, the accommodations were top-notch, meticulously arranged with new bedding and essentials.
Tiffany and Kenneth were assigned to an apartment-style dorm with two floors and three bedrooms—two upstairs, one downstairs. Tiffany confidently claimed the largest, nicest upstairs room.
Kenneth initially wanted to give the upstairs room to Sandra, but the housekeeper stopped him. "Mr. Harper, your mother has already made a big concession. Please don't make this difficult for us."
Sandra, though disappointed, knew she was lucky. She couldn't risk a fuss. "It's okay, Kenneth," she said adoringly. "Just seeing you every day is enough for me."
"Alright then," Kenneth conceded.
Tiffany and Kenneth ended up on the second floor, their rooms side-by-side with adjoining balconies. Tiffany was unconcerned about the budding romance downstairs. She shut her door and began settling in. The room was spotless, requiring little organization. Still, she cautiously checked for hidden cameras or bugs, finding nothing.
Just as she sat down, her phone rang. It was Uncle Owen, a longtime Kelley family company shareholder and the only person who had helped the family. She trusted him completely and had asked him to keep an eye on Stan at the company. He had news.
"Hello, Uncle Owen. Any updates?" Tiffany asked.
"It's going as you predicted. He took the bait. The deal's set for 9 PM tonight at the Skyline Bar." Owen paused, adding with concern, "Tiffany, why are you keeping this from your father? This kind of loss isn't something to take lightly."
"I know. I'll handle it. Thanks, Uncle Owen. I really appreciate your help!" Tiffany replied warmly.
Owen relaxed. He decided not to press further. A small smile played on Tiffany's lips. After days of waiting, things were falling into place. She'd overheard Sandra and her mother planning something.
Around this time, Stan had embezzled $1,200,000 through shady deals in the purchasing department. That money was meant for high-quality steel. He substituted experimental materials, causing a major structural collapse that killed three workers and led to a lawsuit. The incident sent shockwaves through the company. The Kelley Corporation's reputation plummeted, its stock nosedived, Charlie became a pariah, and the financial losses were devastating. Stan, the embezzler, knelt before Charlie, weeping and pleading innocence, claiming he was a victim of a scam. Charlie believed him.
That's why Tiffany hesitated when Uncle Owen questioned her silence. Talking wouldn't help. She wouldn't let Stan get away with it.
