Chapter 305
Kenneth Harper had always been a gentle person. He hugged Melody Princeton and consoled her patiently.
“It’s not your fault,” he said. “I didn’t prepare in advance. I only arranged for land transport, but I overlooked the geography here.”
It hadn't occurred to Kenneth that parts of the mountain roads were inaccessible by car. Now that they had left Lovell City so long ago, arranging for helicopters would likely take a long time.
Melody nodded. “It’s alright. I believe Tiffany will arrange for a helicopter to fly back and pick us up when they reach the destination.”
Kenneth remained silent. He suspected that was highly unlikely. With Tiffany's vengeful personality, she had already been remarkably kind by not pelting them with fruit.
As it turned out, Kenneth was right.
Half an hour later, the helicopters returned. However, the pilots refused to transport the Harper family, citing the need to transport supplies. As the charity staff and school coordinating team boarded the helicopters, the Harper family's driver blurted out angrily, “Why are they allowed to board, but not us?”
Someone replied, “These helicopters belong to the Kelley family. Do you have a problem with that?”
That retort sounded oddly familiar. Everyone was rendered speechless. The Harper group had no grounds to complain; after all, they were there to do charitable work. It was only reasonable that the truck supplies and distribution staff received priority. The Harper group hadn't donated funds or contributed in other ways. Their large entourage consisted mostly of drivers, medics, and personal assistants. In other words, they were just a bunch of spongers.
The others didn't mock the Harper group's pretentiousness, yet the Harpers acted indignant, as if they had been wronged. Therefore, as far as anyone cared, the Harper group could continue the rest of the journey on foot.
Kenneth's face clouded over. He hadn't expected Tiffany to be so ruthless. He was so angry his temples throbbed.
Melody took the opportunity to comfort Kenneth. “It’s fine, Kenny. Let’s just treat it as an experience.”
“Yeah,” he said, smiling in resignation. There was no sign of the anger Melody expected, only his usual accommodating acceptance. Melody's eyes widened, and her smile faded. Going up the mountain would be tough.
Chapter 305
The staircase was constructed of thick, mottled iron chains and wooden planks. It was time-consuming and tiring to climb step by step, and also a little dangerous. The group ascended single file, feeling their way forward fearfully, at a snail's pace.
It took the Harper group more than two hours to navigate the mountain. By the time they arrived at their destination, everyone was sweating profusely and their limbs ached. It was truly a sorry sight.
Then their attention was drawn to one of the farmhouses where they would be staying. Tiffany was already sitting in a wicker chair, enjoying the mountain breeze. A circle of small children were in front of her, offering her various snacks with bright eyes.
“Tiffany, try this. This is sweet potato grown in my family’s field.”
“Tiffany, try this. It’s made from fresh corn.”
“Me, me, me! Try mine!”
The Harper group seethed at the perceived injustice as they watched Tiffany and the children.
When Zoe saw the Harper group, she shouted bluntly, “You guys are too slow. You’re hopeless at everything except slacking off!”
Melody surveyed the area. She noticed helicopters parked nearby, with many empty containers on the ground. Her heart skipped a beat, and she immediately asked, “Where are the supplies?”
Zoe replied leisurely, “Didn’t you see? They’ve all been distributed.”
The Melvor Mountain village chief had been informed earlier that the charity was coming. When Tiffany's helicopters arrived first, he was already waiting with the entire village to receive them. The helicopters made several trips to transport six truckloads of supplies. The charity staff and school staff worked with the village chief to distribute everything quickly.
Zoe crossed her arms and taunted Melody. “All the supplies have been distributed. Do you have a problem with that?”
Melody almost exploded with rage. She yelled, “You should at least wait for us to come before doing this! Otherwise…”
Otherwise, all the credit would go to Tiffany and Zoe. The villagers would only be grateful to those two girls, while she, Melody Princeton, gained nothing.
Zoe immediately rolled her eyes. “Tsk, tsk, tsk. Who do you think you are? Why should we wait for you to distribute the supplies? How shameless!”
Melody hadn’t contributed to the supplies; the nearly two million dollars’ worth of supplies came from Tiffany’s pocket. Only Tiffany was qualified to handle them; she didn’t need anyone to lecture her.
“What a fucking joke!” Zoe snorted. The mocking continued unabated. “Why? Are you feeling hard done by because I didn’t give you a chance to put on a show?”
Chapter 303
“Don’t worry. Just get Mr. Harper to splurge a thousand bucks to make you smile. That should be enough to make you feel important!”
“That’s not what I mean. I just…” Melody wanted to explain but was cowed by Zoe’s ferocious glare.
“Get lost!” Zoe barked. Her voice reverberated through the mountains. Melody’s eyes became red-rimmed, and tears fell.
Kenneth pacified her with a look of resignation. “Alright, alright. Put your things down first. I’ll take you to where you’ll be staying tonight.”
“Mm-hmm…” Melody followed him, but as she turned, she shot Zoe a venomous look. ‘Sooner or later, you will get your comeuppance!’ she cursed inwardly. The murderous look was gone in a flash, but Tiffany didn’t miss it.
Hmph! She wondered who gave Melody the confidence. Was it Sandra Olson?
Tiffany fiddled with her wristband. Her gaze slowly wandered to one of the staff members. The man had an ordinary face and didn’t stand out except for his obsidian-like eyes—dark, deep, bright, and sharp. He was Jeremy Cooper in disguise. Tiffany gave him an eye signal, and Jeremy immediately turned and left.
Before this field trip, Zoe had complained that the chosen date wasn’t good. She didn’t want to come at first and even wanted to take leave to attend Ged Moody’s funeral. However, Tiffany had arranged for the trip on that date for good reason. She wanted the evil, murderous Sandra to pay for her actions. She wanted the vicious Melody to regret what she had done. Only then would justice be served, and that poor fool could finally rest in peace.
“Tiffany, why are you crying?” A childlike voice rang out, and Tiffany came back to her senses. She touched her cheek, surprised by the dampness. “Oh, I got sand in my eyes.”
“Okay.” A few kids bobbed their heads in unison; their naive faces were quite cute. Tiffany smiled and reached out to pat their heads. “All of you are grown up now. You must learn to help the weak and not do bad things, understand?”
“Yah!” A chorus of childlike voices rang out. One kid elaborated, “Grandpa and Grandma taught us this since we were young.”
“Oh, very good.” Tiffany felt very gratified. Right at that moment, she saw the village chief running toward her, shouting urgently…
