The relentless rain forced Sidney and Zoe to seek shelter in an abandoned building. Unable to leave due to the storm, they huddled around a fire for warmth and slept through the night, cold and hungry.
Hours later, they awoke to darkness and discovered they both had high fevers. Exhausted and without medication, their situation seemed dire.
Fortunately, Sidney, known for his medical knowledge, braved the rain to gather herbs. He also caught a fish washed ashore by the storm, which he grilled for them to eat.
After surviving the night, Sidney reasoned that news of the landslide would have reached Lovell City. He assumed Richard would come to their rescue, so he set the building on fire as a signal.
True to his expectation, Richard arrived.
"Come on, Richard! Help me up!" Sidney grinned widely, waving theatrically.
Tiffany shuddered. Sidney's dramatic display was almost too much.
Richard's face darkened. "Hmm?" he said, his tone menacing.
"I'm sorry," Sidney corrected himself quickly. "I really don't have the strength to get up. If you don't help me, I'll have to crawl."
"Crawling wouldn't be so bad. It saves on gas," Richard retorted with a scowl.
Despite his words, a helicopter, arranged by Richard, soon arrived. A team carefully lifted Sidney and Zoe onto stretchers, while Tiffany and Richard joined them on board.
The flight back to the city was long, but it was the fastest option. During the journey, Sidney and Zoe resumed their bickering.
"Do all girls act so unreasonably? I saved you, and you're still glaring at me?" Sidney complained.
"Give me a break. Tiffany saved me, not you. And besides, I haven't settled the score from yesterday," Zoe retorted, her pale face flushing.
Curious, Tiffany asked, "What's this score about?"
Both Zoe and Sidney remained silent, clearly protecting a secret. Tiffany smiled thoughtfully.
Halfway through the flight, Sidney and Zoe took their medication and fell asleep. Tiffany gazed at the breathtaking landscape below—vast valleys, rolling hills, and winding rivers.
Lost in thought, Tiffany felt a weight on her shoulder. Richard was asleep, his head resting lightly on her shoulder.
The other rescue team members were visibly surprised but discreetly glanced at Tiffany.
Initially, Tiffany considered nudging Richard away, but remembering his sacrifice of the bed the previous night, she softened and let him stay.
She remained still for over half an hour until the helicopter landed. By then, Tiffany's neck was stiff.
Richard awoke, surprised. He usually slept lightly. However, resting on Tiffany's shoulder and inhaling her fragrance had given him an unusually restful sleep.
"Why didn't you wake me?" Richard asked, noticing Tiffany's discomfort and patting her back.
Tiffany muttered, "It's the least I could do."
Richard's strong hands provided comfort, and Tiffany quickly felt better.
The helicopter landed on the rooftop of the Kelley family hospital. Tiffany jumped out first and turned to Richard. "I'm heading out now."
As Tiffany prepared to leave, she saw Zoe looking at her tearfully. "Tiffany, will I see you again?"
Smiling, Tiffany gave Zoe her contact information. "You stay put and get well. I'll come visit you tomorrow."
Zoe brightened. "Okay!"
After leaving the hospital, Tiffany took a cab home. She had been missing all night and had no signal due to a power outage. Her phone was dead.
Not wanting to worry her family, Tiffany borrowed the driver's phone to call home. Her mother, Thalia, answered, her voice trembling.
"Is there any news?" Thalia asked, panicked.
Tiffany's heart sank. "Mom, is something wrong at home?"
Hearing Tiffany's voice, Thalia burst into tears. "Darling, your father had an accident."
"What?" Tiffany's face went pale.
Ten minutes later, Tiffany rushed home, finding Thalia looking ten years older. Her usual elegance was gone, replaced by tear-streaked cheeks and a trembling body.
"Mom, what happened?" Tiffany asked, remaining composed.
Thalia, still crying, explained that Charlie had gone on a business trip this morning, driven by the family chauffeur. Their vehicle had overturned and fallen into a river. Thalia had been desperately calling for help until Tiffany's return.
"What do we do?" Thalia asked, trembling.
"When did this happen?" Tiffany asked.
"About half an hour ago," Thalia replied.
Tiffany's worry intensified. Falling into a river for that long meant slim chances of survival.
Tiffany's eyes flashed with determination. She comforted Thalia. "Mom, Dad will be fine. Leave it to me." As Tiffany prepared to leave, they heard a joyful shout. "Mr. Kelley is back! He's back!"
Tiffany and Thalia exchanged a glance and rushed outside. Charlie was drenched but safe.
Thalia rushed to hug him, sobbing. "Do you know how freaking worried this makes me?"
"Don't worry!" Charlie laughed, patting her back. "I'm fine. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
Tiffany sighed in relief. As she was about to thank the person who had rescued Charlie, she realized it was Kenneth.
