Chapter 142
Landon threw a lavish birthday party, and Amelia looked genuinely pleased.
Meanwhile, Daniel, still reeling from Maisie’s earlier jab, managed a grateful smile and said, “Thanks.”
“Amy’s got a gift for you, too,” Landon said, leaning back in his wheelchair as he sized up Daniel.
People who achieve great things always have excellent composure. The last time Daniel lost his cool was over the Amber Vase. But that night, he was even more unsettled. Perhaps Maisie’s words had that much influence on him.
“Thank you, Amelia.” Daniel looked flattered and immediately put on the tie she gave as a gift.
“As long as you like it, Daniel.” Amelia covered her mouth and giggled. “But a black card for just a suit, that’s hardly a good deal for you.”
Daniel let out a heavy sigh. “I’m sorry I didn’t find you sooner. You suffered under the Edwards family for so many years, and almost fell victim to Zachary’s–” Worried Landon might misunderstand, he left the rest unsaid.
“It’s all in the past. The moment I opened my eyes on the operating table, my fate changed,” Amelia said, glancing at Landon as a blush appeared on her cheeks.
‘In my life, I’ve ended up in a man’s bed twice, and somehow, I managed to find true love,’ she thought.
“She was quite clear-headed, even wanted a divorce at one point!” Landon said with a laugh as he poured Daniel a drink. “To the birthday boy, cheers!”
Daniel’s face turned stern as he refused the glass. “What’s this about you two getting a divorce?”
‘I’m not drinking until I get the full story,’ he thought.
Amelia explained sheepishly, “Oh, that was right after I first came to the Kingsley family. I just wanted to protect myself, so we agreed to annul the marriage once he recovered.”
She chuckled to herself, “I was so stubborn back then. Looking back, it was just like lovers having their first silly quarrel.”
“I see. So, how about you two now?” Daniel’s gaze shifted between them.
‘If this marriage isn’t making her happy, she has to leave!’ he thought firmly.
“You know? We’re planning to grow old together!” Landon said.
Daniel looked at Landon, then at Amelia. ‘But that decision is up to Amelia,’ he thought.
“Mm-hmm,” Amelia nodded shyly, her cheeks blushing. Only then did Daniel relax and accept the drink Landon offered.
‘Man, my brother-in-law loves putting on airs,’ Landon thought to himself.
Knowing Landon’s inner thoughts, Amelia awkwardly tried to smooth things over. “I’m starving. Let’s all dig in!”
“Sure,” Daniel nodded.
During dinner, conversation flowed easily among the three of them. But midway through the meal, Daniel’s assistant, Micah, approached and said respectfully, “Mr. Zuckerberg, Dr. Mitchell has arrived.”
“Bring him in,” Daniel replied. As the family head, he rose personally to greet the distinguished physician.
An elderly man with white hair entered with a chuckle. He stroked his beard. “Mr. Zuckerberg, who is this special person you mentioned earlier? And why do you need my help?”
The moment his gaze fell upon Landon, his eyes widened in shock, and his smile instantly disappeared.
“Dr. Mitchell, this is my sister, Amelia, and my brother-in-law, Landon Kingsley.”
He raised an eyebrow. Meanwhile, Amelia stood up gracefully and said, “It’s an honor to meet you, Dr. Mitchell.”
He extended his hand. “Pleased to meet you, I’m Morgan Mitchell, but you can call me Dr. Mitchell.”
Morgan studied Landon for a few seconds before finally shaking his hand. “Mr. Kingsley, what happened to your legs?”
Landon replied, “I was in a car accident a few months ago and was in a coma for over three months. I’ve mostly recovered now, though I still can’t walk yet.”
Morgan checked his pulse, then examined his legs and pressed on his knees. Seeing this, Amelia asked anxiously, “Dr. Mitchell, how long until he can stand up again?”
“Hard to say,” Morgan replied, stroking his beard thoughtfully.
Most of Amelia’s hope vanished instantly. “Dr. Mitchell…”
Dr. Mitchell calmed her. “Landon’s pulse is steady, and he’s in good health. The immobility is due to incomplete nerve recovery. It’ll take time, but no treatment will work without his own will to stand.”
Amelia thought over Morgan’s words carefully, then asked tentatively, “Dr. Mitchell, do you mean that as long as he has the will, he can recover?”
“That’s one way to put it,” Morgan replied.
“That’s wonderful! My husband wants to walk again more than anyone else, Doctor.” Amelia’s face lit up with joy. “Honey, you can do this!”
“Alright.” Landon smiled at her. “Since we’re lucky enough to meet Dr. Mitchell, could you take a look at my wife as well?”
“What’s wrong with Amy?” Daniel’s heart skipped a beat.
‘Is my sister sick too?’ he wondered anxiously.
“It’s nothing serious, just a quick examination,” Amelia said, biting her lip as she extended her hand, a faint glimmer of hope in her eyes.
Gloria had already taken her to countless doctors, but none could cure her. Perhaps Morgan could help.
“Wait, iodine poisoning?” Morgan asked in surprise as he checked her pulse.
“Yes.” Amelia lowered her eyes in worry.
Hearing this, Daniel glared furiously at Landon. “How could you let this happen to her?”
“Daniel, it was an accident. Please don’t blame him,” Amelia quickly interrupted.
Daniel took a deep breath, struggling to contain his anger. “Dr. Mitchell, how is my sister?”
“The pain usually comes periodically. Usually once a month, and currently, she can’t have children,” Morgan explained.
‘Can’t have children, for now?’ Amelia’s eyes lit up, as if bathed in the light of hope.
“Dr. Mitchell, does that mean I might still have a chance to have kids?” Amelia asked.
“Certainly,” Dr. Mitchell assured her. “The Meyers possess a special medicine that could help you greatly. If we can obtain it, I can cure you!”
“What kind of medicine?” Landon and Daniel blurted out in unison, their excitement palpable.
Morgan explained, “It’s a legendary drug called Velmira, developed by a doctor back in 1949. Velmira is used to treat infertility in women.”
Daniel responded right away, “No problem. I’ll head back to Lunova to ask for…”
“Daniel, there’s no rush. Let’s take our time,” Amelia said with concern.
‘Maisie is related to the Meyers from her mother’s side. After offending her today, getting the medicine won’t be so easy, will it?’ she thought anxiously.
“Exactly. We’re newlyweds! There’s no hurry to have children,” Landon said lazily, though he was already formulating other plans.
After dinner, Daniel and Amelia planned to visit their mother’s grave in Pinecrest. Meanwhile, Morgan walked over to Landon and muttered, “You bastard, pretending even in front of me?”
“To be precise, I’m only pretending in front of my wife, Dr. Mitchell,” Landon replied, then casually shook his legs, dropping all pretense.
“Hah!” Morgan laughed in exasperation. “Pretending to your wife, I see? Sooner or later, she’ll learn about this!”
Landon smiled. “Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing.” He and Morgan seemed to have a secret.
Morgan stroked his beard with a grunt. “Since you were sick, why didn’t you report it to your superiors? If you had told me earlier, you wouldn’t have had to lie in bed for three months!”
“Can a crippled guy file a report?”
“But you woke up later, didn’t you? A call or a text? How hard could that be?”
“Didn’t want to bother him,” Landon sighed.
The two mirrored each other’s stubbornness, neither willing to yield. Morgan sighed, “Are you still blaming him?”
Landon’s face hardened. “If he hadn’t interfered back then, I would have found Kayla long ago. As long as my sister is still missing, I won’t ever forgive him.”
“Kayla, huh? Let’s not talk about that. Handle it as you see fit,” Morgan sighed again.
“Morgan, if you can cure my wife, I’ll make peace with you,” Landon said with a grin.
Morgan’s beard bristled as he glared. “You dare bargain with me, Landon?”
“You can always refuse, you know?” Landon shrugged.
“Alright, fine, I accept,” Morgan muttered reluctantly.
