Chapter 172

Landon. Amelia’s vulce quivered.

Landon looked to her shocked eyes and said calmly, “Sorry, but I can’t afford to have any weaknesses.”

Amelia felt a pricking pain in her heart. She waited for Landon to send her a telepathic message, to tell her it was all just an act.

But after several long minutes, she still heard nothing from him.

‘He’s serious!’ Amelia thought in shock.

Joanna kept her eyes locked on Amelia, scrutinizing every flicker of her expression.

She knew Landon was a master of emotional control, his thoughts impenetrable. She could only try to discern his intentions by observing Amelia, whose face showed more emotions.

“If Landon gives up on Amelia, that will be a real problem…” Joanna thought.

“Landon, are you going to give up on me?” Amelia asked again, her lips trembling.

Landon remained perfectly composed, his voice devoid of emotion. “I’ll visit you every year.”

Amelia’s tears fell uncontrollably, her heart aching so intensely that her whole body trembled.

Seeing Amelia’s heartbroken state, Joanna confirmed that Landon meant it.

Joanna’s heart skipped a beat. ‘He meant it. Damn it! I underestimated his rationality.’

Joanna’s mind was in turmoil. She sneered, “Amelia, you’re just like Catherine. You two have terrible taste in men.”

Amelia was crying uncontrollably, tears streaming down her face.

‘What a bastard!’ Amelia cursed silently. ‘Just moments ago, he was comforting me, telling me not to be afraid, and now he wants to kill me. After starting all over again, I can’t believe I’m still going to die at the hands of a man in the end. Sure enough, I should’ve known that love only brings heartbreak.’

“Amelia, you’d better find a way to save yourself. Otherwise, I can’t stop him now,” Joanna said, pinning all her hopes on Amelia.

‘At this point, only she might be able to change Landon’s mind,’ Joanna thought.

“Landon, you’re so heartless…” Amelia choked out bitterly.

Landon’s heart ached seeing Amelia so utterly devastated, but he knew this was the only way to fool Joanna.

“Amelia, speak up!” Joanna snapped impatiently.

Amelia closed her eyes, her voice raw. “What’s there to say? Dead by your hand or his, it makes no difference in the end.”

“You…” Joanna choked with rage, thinking, ‘Like mother, like daughter. Amelia is truly her mother Catherine’s daughter. Even their self–destructive tendencies are the same. How spineless!’

At that moment, Amelia heard Landon’s thoughts again. [Amy, keep your eyes closed and don’t move. Listen to me.]

Amelia was about to open her eyes, but she kept them tightly shut at his words.

Landon continued: [That was just for Joanna to see. Now, I’m going to save you. When I count to three, lean forward with all your might.]

A jolt went through Amelia. ‘He hadn’t given up on me. Thank goodness! Thank goodness!’

Chapter 173

Amelia was too overwhelmed with joy that she was about to burst into tears, but she forced herself to keep a straight face, not daring to let the emotion show.

Joanna could only see the endless tears falling down Amelia’s face, and despair gripped her heart.

She clenched her teeth, making one final desperate gamble. “Landon, this is your last chance…”

Landon started counting telepathically. [Honey, here we go. One, two, three.]

Amelia snapped her eyes open. Summoning every ounce of strength she had, she hurled herself forward.

The heavy wooden chair toppled forward as she moved. The fat man who was holding her hostage was just about to press down on the chair when he got hit by a bullet between his eyebrows.

His knife clattered to the floor as he collapsed.

The second thug was gunned down before he could even react.

In the next instant, Landon, sitting in the wheelchair just moments before, sprang

‘His legs are healed?’ Joanna thought in shock.

Not only Joanna, but Amelia was also stunned.

“Take them down!” Joanna roared.

Amelia’s side with the speed and agility of a panther.

At that moment, with a sudden crash of shattering glass, the police officers lying in ambush outside and Landon’s men stormed in through the windows simultaneously.

Everything happened in a flash. Before Joanna could even process what was happening, it was all over.

Landon carried Amelia and strode away, leaving the chaotic scene behind for the police and Brooke.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me his legs had healed?” Joanna asked furiously.

But no one answered her.

With everyone fighting, no one had time to answer her anyway.

The sounds of battle faded behind them as the river wind swept, and Amelia clung to Landon’s neck.

After surviving the ordeal, she was too shocked to speak. Only by clinging to Landon did she truly feel safe again.

“Sorry that I scared you,” Landon murmured, his voice thick with guilt as he carefully lifted Amelia into the car.

Amelia shook her head and held him even tighter.

She settled onto his lap as he took a seat in the car.

It took her an eternity to finally recover.

Then, it occurred to her that his legs had only just regained mobility. ‘Yet he’d carried me all this way, then served as my chair for so long,’ Amelia thought with guilt.

“Are your legs okay?” Amelia quickly slid over to the seat beside him, asking anxiously.

Landon smiled tenderly. “I’m fine. Really.”

Amelia rested her hand on his thigh, giving it a light squeeze. “Quite an eventful day, huh? It seems it even shocked your legs back to life,” she teased.

“Exactly!” Landon responded tenderly. “My heart ached seeing you tied up like that.”

The truth was, his legs had healed long ago. He just wanted to keep it quiet for personal reasons.

But because Joanna stirred up trouble, he had no choice but to scrap his plans and reveal his recovery early.

“Sorry, my stomach was killing me at the time. I never thought it would end up like this,” Amelia said, still annoyed. But she couldn’t hold it any longer at that time. She didn’t even have time to make it to Daniel’s private ward.

“Don’t blame yourself. If I were the one hurt, you’d rush to help me without hesitation, too,” Landon murmured and kissed her cheek.

“You know I would!” Amelia snuggled tightly into Landon’s arms and said, “But you have to promise me, don’t ever put yourself in danger again. I don’t have your abilities. I wouldn’t be able to save you.”

“Okay,” Landon smiled softly.

“Honey, having you in my life is my greatest blessing,” Amelia sighed.

“You’re my lucky star, too. If it weren’t for you, I’d still be in a coma,” said Landon.

“God has been so kind to me,” Amelia said with deep emotion.

‘This life’s blessings have healed all the pain from my past existence,’ she thought.

Soon, Aaron, Brooke, and the others came out.

“Where’s Joanna?” Landon asked.

“She got away,” Brooke said with frustration.

Landon’s expression darkened. “Wasn’t Basile’s escape tunnel already sealed?”

“Like a cunning rabbit with multiple burrows, Joanna had prepared several escape routes,” Brooke said. “She was well–prepared. If your legs hadn’t suddenly recovered, Mr. Kingsley, we might not have pulled this off.”

“Alright! Keep chasing her. Show no mercy!” Landon commanded.

Brooke and Aaron exchanged uneasy glances but remained silent, neither daring to respond.

After all, Joanna was with the Kington Gang. Killing her would mean making enemies with the entire Kington Gang.

Assuming the Meyer family’s influence made Brooke hesitate, Amelia said softly, “Honey, don’t do anything illegal. Just teach her a lesson.”

Landon’s expression darkened with suppressed anger. After a long, tense pause, he finally relented. “Fine…”
